Not sure where you heard that but soda is one of the biggest contributors to obesity. A very large percentage of the calories in high-fructose corn syrup will end up getting converted from sugar to fat. People with a soda-heavy diet have been known to drop a fair amount of weight simply by converting to tea, water, or something similar.

That guy looked fairly fat for a piss-drinker though, maybe he chases it with soda.

I used to drink so much everyday (5-6 cans. I'm not proud) and last year I went cold turkey all together and lost quite a bit of weight (not as much as I would of liked) but considering I don't exercise I was happy with what I lost by just not drinking soda.
