He's saying that if you go /WAR for extra damage, but hold back to not pull hate, you aren't really doing any more damage than you could if you went /NIN and full tilt. There's not such a thing as just 'balancing' it in XP, either you're doing solid damage or not, tanks are only given so many tools at those levels and eventually you'll pull hate if you're cranking it out.
When I leveled, I did solid damage through out the fight, then fucking destroyed it from 30-35% to dead. There is a balance, whether you want to believe it or not.
And I did it before the 2handed update, so don't throw that bandwagon bs in my face.
This made me /grin. I have known such peeps. Is that any worse then our taru white mages who have 1300 mp but 350 hp? Or the black mages that want the latent on their sorc ring so keep themselves at 400 hp to stay in yellow?
DRK has Drain and Stun (and later Drain 2 and Dread Spikes) to cure and prevent small amounts of damage taken. With /WAR, you hold back for 2/3 of the fight, then rapeface the last 1/3. Assuming you aren't the only good DD in the pt, this works quite well.
/WAR is for the worst and the best until /SAM is good. /NIN is for everyone in between.
Am I the only one that didn't see the need to keep GAxe leveled? GSword and Scythe were enough and since DRK gets shafted at Lv60 in terms of GAxe (No Raging Rush; fuck you SE) Scythe takes over with Guillotine, then GSword takes over at Lv66 with Spinning Slash.
Yeah, GA is just filler til Guillo/SS. No need to use pass that.
The only way to know if you can use an M kris in parties is if your party can handle the extra TP spam from mobs, and if you can actually hit the thing making it worthwhile. I would assume neither are in your favour.
To join in the /war debate, my own experience has been you cannot reach your full potential in terms of damage while /war as staying alive is difficult and taking hate even when holding back had been a problem for me, for a long time. I would take hate simply from double attacks (with pole, brutal, and natural 10% from war sub) nevermind letting loose a Guillotine and not be able to migitate damage. While we do have Stun, Drain and Drain II, they generate further enmity and you can't rely on Drain to save you due to resists or partial resists which happen to the best of us, even those of us that have a considerable dark magic set and merits.
After not using /war for months I decided to try it out at a ZNM because my gear is considerably better since I last used it. I died quickly even holding back, /SAM is without a doubt the king of subs for DRK for all intents and purposes (well, most).
A few people mentioned 60+ as far as I'm aware, but most of it is still applicable, /war is still dangerious and a punch bag right up to 60 with all the benefits of damage aside, looking at the majority of the drk population they're not going to do much damage when face down, weither they are 75, or 55. /nin however will give them survivability to go all out from 24. I didn't have that luxury, drk was my first job past 50 and I didnt unlock nin until I was about 60 anyway, so /war and /thf was my way of lving and it was painful to say the least.
infact when someone mentioned "we have drain" if we are talking about lving up to 60, its even less applicable to include drain in your survival tools as it was completely unreliable until the higher 60s I found, and my dark magic was capped from the early 30s onward. Not to mentiom the sheer amount of exp parties that lv on bats in the citadel at two different periods in their levelling career.
