Right from the beginning things are fucked up w/ the pedophile babysitter, but you think things are going to be alright when the new husband kind of 'empowers' the kids by vandalizing the dude's house. Of course, it's all part of the Bunting's psychosis (hates homosexuals and pedophiles and then, as the real life events showed - people he simply 'suspected' of that 'deviant' behavior). Scenes like the car scene where Bunting smashes James head against the glass repeatedly or when he forces him to kill the dog are difficult to watch.
The torture scenes and the one rape scene are of course difficult to watch as well. However, I felt like the psychological manipulation and abuse Bunting inflicted on James was the focal point. Bunting also bullied and abused James brother (not the youngest one or the step-brother who he would later kill).
James Vlassakis eventually went to prison too since he took part in some of the murders towards the end, but I saw him as as much a victim as he was a murderer.
I also liked the 'look' of the film and the music (and often, lack thereof) which built tension/horror/etc. The very last scene in particular - the look on the victim's face when he realizes what's about to happen. The look on Jame's face. When James was riding w/ him on the way to supposedly get the computer, they made small talk and talked about the girlfriend. They went out for a beer. It was all so 'normal' and the actual 'trip to get the computer' took awhile. That made the final moment that much more horrifying. Plus, it was all true.
I read that in real-life, Bunting and the other killer (but not James) actually ate some of the victim's flesh... As a child, apparently Bunting had tortured animals and specifically enjoyed drowning insects in acid.
It was a good movie but difficult to watch. It's so bleak, compounded by the fact that the people in the film are all working-class or poor and out of work. James mother wasn't an evil person like Bunting, but she did assist in one of the murders of a suspected pedophile. But throughout the movie, she just looks like she's slowly dying. Her gaunt, worn-out face. The fact that she wasn't able to detect the pedophile she thought was a friend. And later when Bunting psychologically dominates her too. BTW - the person who played her is not a professional actor.
She was an unknown, single mom the director saw in a supermarket arguing w/ some other lady - which is what caught his eye. She did a great job in the movie. I thought she was a veteran.
I felt sorry for everyone. Seemed like a shitty life in that town.
