XBOX Marketplace [Braid]: Best platformer this decade?

Just downloaded the Demo of this game off of XBOX Marketplace, and I have to say I'm fucking impressed. I remember seeing something on this awhile ago through Gametrailers, and stumbled upon it today while downloading some SOAD songs.

    http://braid-game.com/

The game is just 2D at its best. The graphics have a hand-painted, dreamy, shimmery look to them that is incredibly unique, the writing so far is alil sappy, but if it's your thing, you'll get sucked into it. (read: I did). I've only done the first world, yet I've already been impressed by the uniqueness of a couple of the puzzles. (You'll know what I mean when you figure them out, just so out of the ordinary. The use of time travel both back and forth...is a great perk to the gameplay.) Needless to say I'm buying Microsoft Points right now to unlock the full version. If anyone deserves your money, its the creator of this game. We need to see more innovative titles like this.

This is why I'm a fan of XBL / Wiiware etc, allowing things like this to become mainstream, and bringing back the "Bedroom Developer" rather than making people think that amazing games need to be developed in amazing studios.

Exactly. I just bought my copy an hour or 2 ago, and Im making my way gathering puzzle pieces now. This guy stated that if he had put the game at $10 instead of the $15 its at, and it flopped somewhat, he'd be in huuge debt. (He already borrowed an incredible amount of money for it to begin with.) Could just be a marketing ploy, but honestly I'd like to give him the benefit of the doubt. There's obviously a lot of heart put into this game.

Just in case no-one is hyped for this, it's getting 9/10's all over the place, won best Puzzle game of the year, Best Xbox Live Arcade Game of the year, and runner up in 3 other categories. (Artistic design, Innovation, and downloadable console game) Only lost to a game that's not even out yet haha.

Anyway enough endorsements...I just know the success of this game will be largely word of mouth, so I'm playing my part.

I've read a few reviews and it sounds great, but they all say its short [though none have listed how long it takes on average to beat]. That's my only concern... I don't want to pay 15$ for a game that may only take 4-5 hrs to beat

You pay for the experience not the time it wastes. By that logic you'd buy a game just because it has a bunch of stupid shit you can possible do even though it sucks ass. I bet you played Oblivion.

This game looks amazing, as soon as I get my switch I'm going to get on XBL and download it.

I don't think anything can quite match Oblivion in terms of $ per hour played...

I didn't mean it like that. I meant it in the same vein as a rental v. purchase worthy game. Most people won't buy a game they can beat in one day that has little/no replay value... granted this game isn't a rental but I am curious as to how long it takes on average to complete.

I think it depends on how fast you deal with puzzles so completion time could vary greatly.

Not to derail the thread any further, but definitely if you haven't already, check out Rez HD. It was originally on PS2 i believe, but it's a great game.

So I downloaded this to check it out and am enjoying it (especially the music). But I'm failing somewhere...There are puzzle pieces I can't get in the first world and can't figure out if I'm missing a control, a time related thing, or I'm supposed to wait until later in the game where I get some ability ala Untitled Story and the like. I'm referring to seemingly simple pieces that appear too high up to jump for like the piece above the door right after the place you put all the pieces together...

lol Nuriko i was having problems with it too. To answer, no you dont get any new abilities that you can go back with and solve it. every puzzle can be solved from the start. I played thru the game went back and figured it out. When you see what it is youll face palm yourself. Oh and the ending was pretty damn cool

I thought you couldn't get those two pieces until after you collected the rest of them. At least that's how I did it. I won't spoil how to get it but I think it was very innovative, and when i solved how to get those two, i definitely did a face palm, lol. I only got the demo but i'm going to buy it

I was also having a hard time with the first world, but it was awesome figuring out how to get all the pieces.

So far, that's the only time I've seen where you can't solve the puzzle right then and there, and must wait for future happenings in another world.

Honestly I don't know how people are saying they finish this game so quickly...my brain is dying trying to get every puzzle. I've cleared through all stages but the one after the ladders....but some of them are mind-boggling. I hope you're not cheating yourselves by checking out FAQs and shit. Complaining a game has a short play time, while cheating on the one thing that gives this game playtime (it's difficulty of puzzles) is probably the worst argument against a game I've seen. Not to say anyone is guilty of this..but I cant see people saying they've beat this game in 3 hours, when I've been stuck on single puzzle pieces for 30mins at a time.

The ending is a big WTF. I'm extremely confused. I figured out the 'puzzles' to get the complete info, but that just made it worse.

    Spoiler: show
I'm talking all about the stuff in the books, I made sense of it until part entitled "Epilogue". The scene you do backwards before you realize you're abducting and not saving the princess is one of the most awesome things I've seen

    How to see the alternate:
    Spoiler: show
Open a red book and, without touching a green book, go behind some object so your character is completely obstructed from view.
