FFXI + eee testing and results

    http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v5...s/IMG_7629.jpg

I've been waiting on preorder for one of these for almost a month now and I finally got it.

For those that don't know, it's the newest version of the eee pc, the eee 901 specifically the 20gb SSD linux version. Specs are as follows:

    8.9" screen
1.6ghz single core (hyperthreaded) atom processor
    1gb of memory
    20gb (5+15gb) SSD
    screen resolution of 1024x600

As you can tell the first thing I did was installed xp to try out benchmarks on the atom processor as this is where the fun of the system comes from. I haven't yet seen anyone use the atom processor with FFXI so I figured I'd post some immediate unofficial results (will test further).

Just please note I didn't purchase this to play games on even though it is actually fairly capable of playing older games (sub 2004) and offers a pretty gosh darn good portable multimedia solution.

FFXI settings were pretty much everything on minimum except a background resolution of 1024x1024 for minimum legoness.

In mog house everything pretty well caps out as normal but gets a little more painful once you head outside to the dreaded whitegate.

Granted your still very well capable of doing the casual chat and auction house window shopping because the FPS never really dipped any lower with minimum character models.
Very nice for away from home usage considering I can fit it in my bike jacket pocket.

Just so you can get the idea of the size of it. The biggest issue with the size is obviously the keyboard isn't as big as most people would like it to be, but I don't really feel it's too much of an issue for me.

As for non FFXI stuff goes, battery life seems to last for about 4 - 4 1/2 hours while surfing internet and other casual stuff. Haven't yet tested on games. It is also fully well capable of decoding divx movies without a hitch as well as any other casual stuff.

If you have any questions or anything you'd like me to test, ask away. The new(er) atom processor with dual cores is said to be released sometime in September so some might wish to wait until that version, while this is enough for me.

That's some nice battery life, iinm. I wouldn't mind a smaller travel laptop. I had to get the 19" widescreen lappy for WoWing. Runs it fantastically (after going back to XP...Vista was a killer, but then again, I didn't upgrade my RAM).

Very nice, this has got me interested now. Fits the bill on everything I wanted in a laptop... How's combat in FFXI with it, specifically from a mage. Would I have to face a wall to get it decent?

probably yes, unless you're used to playing with 10-15 fps, sometimes less.
