A couple of other writers that haven't been mentioned:

    Kurt Busiek (especially Astro City)
    J. Michael Straczynski (Rising Stars, Midnight Nation)

All of these works are easily available in trade paperback and are generally self-contained stories that don't require background reading.

Any graphic novels out there with a high-level quality of artwork?

I've been snooping around for something that's comparable to BlackSad in terms of artwork, but I've yet to see anything from the stuff I've looked at from my local comic book shop.
(only graphic novels I own myself is the aforementioned BlackSad, V for Vendetta, and 300)

It's the watercolour-painted one by Alex Ross about all the superheroes but I guess yes you could say it's mostly about Superman.

Kingdom Come is a great book that challenges the notion of Superman who can be such a flat character. His perfection gets pushed and pushed to it's limits until it all boils over into a huge mess.

Another good Superman book is Red Son.

Thanks for all the input everyone. I've looked up a lot of these suggestions on Wikipedia and Kingdome Come and Astro City look really interesting. I also did some digging through Eisner and Harvey award winners for ideas as well.

thirded. It was an epic read for me. That big one-volume version I was only able to find in black and white, which I'm actually ok with. But if you're looking for color you can find them split up a bit more and in color.

I'm actually really glad I avoided Sandman when it was still being released monthly -- reading it in one huge chunk let me appreciate the threads that crept through the entire series. Fucking incredible if you're into myth/archetype/jungian crap.

Transmetropolitan is classic, must-read, I'm not kidding, I've set my gun to "prolapse".

    I actually started reading this;

Which he has a graphic novel out for it. Pretty good imo.

The reason for this is that the series was originally released in black and white. Jeff Smith is going back and coloring the entire thing, and those are the color volume releases. Last I saw, that was still in-progress, but close to done.

altho sandman and the watchman are classics, i myself like The Authority. Its a Dark Horse Comic that can be found in a graphic novel. it basically has parodies of all your major supes but with a serious twist. its a must read in my book.

Batman : The Dark Knight Returns (this one cannot be recommended enough, it's easily one of the best comic stories ever written, avoid the sequel like the plague though)
Ultimates 1/2 (if you have to pick one, go with Homeland Security, 2nd arc in Ultimates 1)
Iron Man : The Armor Wars (oldie but goodie, doubt you could find this except for used these days though)
Sam and Max : Surfing the Highway
Batman Vs. Predator (Yes I'm serious, I love this crossover)
Wanted (It is absolutely nothing like the movie)

And it's a long read, but as Huggo said, Preacher. Probably my favorite comic of all time, the "Go fuck yourself" scene is one of the funniest things I have ever seen/read. And Skai is awesome for mentioning Slam Dunk!, that's one of my favorite mangas despite not really being a basketball fan.

So I ended up getting these two:

1001 Nights of Snowfall: The 'Fables' comics looked really interesting to me, but I thought I would try this one-off first to get a feel for the series before launching into more volumes. Of what I've read so far it's quite good and I love the varied art styles.

Exit Wounds by Rutu Modan: It almost seems to be a 'slice of life' type story, but much more sombre. I love her clear line drawing style and am looking forward to reading this one quite a bit.

I was also looking for Louis Riel: A Comic Strip Biography, but they were out.

I forgot, most anything by Brian Michael Bendis is great. Read Powers & his ENTIRE run on Daredevil. Better than Frank Miller imo.
