Don't dig it yourself. The procedure to get it done is really short - less than an hour from injecting the anesthetic to leaving the clinic. You can even go back to work if you really want to. For the soaking after, you can also use epsom salts and get the same result as vinegar.

The doctor might also let you take pictures. I have pictures of the shards from my right big toe. :3

I have a feeling it's more or less that ingrown toenails aren't something people talk about in their everyday discourse. But add in that good old internet anonymity and that gross toe thing is just one more way to raise your post count and talk about random shit online.

If you've actually seen people with their toenails completely removed it's kind of a surreal experience.

One of my uncles had horrible ingrown toenails so when he was in his 30s a podiatrist removed all his toenails. Seriously, he has not a single toenail and his feet look really freaky - they almost look fake without them.

I just went to a foot doctor, he numbed my entire foot, used some crazy looking tools and cut the side of it off. It was pretty cool.

I have never had a major one. Usually I just start feeling pain on the side of my toe, take a shower, pull the thin piece of nail out when it is soft and move on with my life. No big deal, no infection, and easy to do.

The numbing shots for the surgeries hurt so bad. That shit is thick like pudding, and they do like a bunch of shots of it.

My first ingrown toe nail I put off going to the foot doctor and it got incredibly infected. Any pressure at all near the big toe that was ingrown would cause excruciating pain.

So I go to the foot doctor...... who proceeds to remove it WITHOUT FUCKING USING ANESTHETIC!....... I sware I almost got up and stabbed the man with his own tools. This was my first experience with a Podiatrist, so I quickly left after he was done.....well not quickly I was limping like crazy...and swore to never return.

A year later I get it again in the same toe. Luckily my g/f had just gotten a job at a medical center as a receptionist for a Podiatrist. She told me that doctor was basically an idiot, and that the procedure is typically painless except for the pricks from the anesthetic.

I went back to her, and it was a painless procedure. And the foot doctor was a fairly attractive asian woman so that made it all the better.

I ended up doing what everyone suggests not doing and digging it out myself. Its pretty crazy seeing how far those fuckers burrow into your skin. No infection here !

I was going to tell you to be careful doing it. I had one earlier in the year. Just because you dug it out, doesn't mean that it cannot get infected. It is actually more susceptible to infection after being dug out than prior to it.

I tried to dig it out with no success! It hurts more to do it myself than someone else or a doctor doing it.

Forgot to mention that soaking the toe in epsom salt can help draw some of the infection out (if you have one), and it makes it a tad bit less painful. My doctor even had me do it for 2 weeks after I got mine removed.

I got my ingrown toenail from a stupid decision that I regretted for the next two years. I went swimming in my school pool and I took some flippers out to fuck around. When I jumped in already and noticed that I picked a size too small, I said fuck it I can deal with the slight pressure on my feet. BIG MISTAKE. In the next two months, I noticed my big toe starting to hurt really bad and bleed through my sock. Needless to say, the experience was horrible, the pain is so bad that you have to limp a bit when it's badly infected. I had 3 operations to get the ingrown part of the nail removed, the first 2 failed because it just grew back. The 3rd one, (luckily I had the same doctor all three operations), my doctor put some chemical on the post op wound after he cut it out. About 10% of the side of my big toe nail will never grow back now, and it looks like the ingrown nail won't grow back... DEFINITELY worth it imo. Been ingrown free for the past 3 years. :D

What anesthetic were you getting? It hurts like a bitch be cause of the location, and sometimes you can feel the needle scraping the bone.

Either that or my doctor is an asshole.

Go to the doctor. Trust me. It will hurt like fuck until they actually cut the sides. If it gets bad enough they will actually remove the entire toenail. Bottom line, it's going to hurt like fuck until you do something to fix it.

As to the anesthetic, I never had a problem with it. Doc just popped the needle in and doped up my toe. Never hit the bone or anything. They numbed up the very top of my toe and the sides(it was my big toe.)

Um what? I've had to go in twice to get my toenail removed. They numbed my up cut it off and I was out in my car in twenty minutes. It was termed "a procedure" by my insurance company. I hear the word operation and I'm thinking scalpel and full sedation etc lol.

have one on my left foot (big toe), hasn't bothered me in about 5 years
had one on my right foot (big toe), ruptured the bloodvessel or something underneath the nail by accidentally rolling a shopping cart over my foot, blood went everywhere

basically the doctor will cut away the sides of the nail, and then kill the ...things, forgot what he called them, that cause the nail to grow, leaving the nail *slightly* slimmer width-wise than it was before, but it doesn't deform the nail, mine looks perfectly fine just a bit less wide

an ingrown toenail is basically a staple-like action of the sides of the nail where they will begin to grow to the sides of the toe, then curl down and then up, like what a staple looks like after it's been used

very very painful, and any slight bump to the toe while in this state or infected, will cause unbearable pain
