Strange for you to be making more than one sentence in a thread without some ridiculously sarcastic and exaggerated point that adds nothing to the thread but that obviates your obliviousness in the matter in question.

I read that when he did it(and admitted to it), it was back in 2006 BEFORE his wife's cancer returned, so it's not exactly as atrocious as people make it sound.

You're just so easy to pick apart, but you're right, we should focus back onto Edwards:

    He's a dick.

Ok now that we got that out of the way, what's shall we do now?

People love to cling to their Norman Rockwell fantasies about how marriage and family are supposed to be. In heterosexual marriages partners cheat on approximately 56% of the time; this means that more often than not people will step out on their spouses. This is not new, people have not changed in more than 10,000 years of recorded history.

I would have more of a problem with this had he been caught with a man but was a vocal anti-gay politician or was screaming bloody murder when Clinton had his affair in the open. People really need to grow up about sex, if his wife isn't making a big deal about it, why should we care.

I think the important question is does this prevent him from still being able to help the country if he gets a position in politics again?

I'm thinking that the answer is 'no, it won't hurt his ability to do his job' but I think it did make him unelectable, so if it'll be an appointed position if he gets anything.

I think the point you are missing is the fact he ran as "I am a family man! look how much i love my cancer-surviving wife" in 2004, hell even in 2008. Maybe that was just the media but that's how he was portrayed.
Your little percentage doesn't make cheating any more acceptable, i don't care if 95% of people do it. Cheaters are garbage when you are talking about marriage.

It matters to the public because the public wants somebody moral in positions of power. Not to say any of the people that are in power are moral, but the public will always be hurt and upset over things like this.

No, the point is that he didn't run on a "Family Values" platform, then divorce his wife when she turned up with cancer. (The answer is "Newt Gingrich".) And I could see why you would think that the family man was the image that John Edwards tried to convey, since the big media outlets did everything that they could to avoid talking to/about him during the primary season. (But the funny part was that Hillary and Obama both started to sound a lot like Edward's after he dropped out.)

And it isn't a little percentage, it is a majority percentage. You can say "cheaters are scum", but at least half of the people you know who are married have cheated or have been cheated upon. Think about it- friends, family members, coworkers, people standing in line at the grocery store. Does that mean that you should cheat? No. But it is highly unrealistic to expect no one to cheat, especially people in positions of power who get it thrown at them all the time. (All it takes is one moment of weakness...)

The American public doesn't want moral people in power, but they do love fake morality and public piety. But more than that, they love to see the people fall. Once more, 10,000+ years of recorded history and we have not changed a bit. Society has changed, technology has evolved, but humans behave no differently. Instead of hearing about the village chief boinking the bar maid while out on the hunt, we hear about it on radio, TV, and the internet. In many ways I envy our past counterparts, they didn't have to worry about the 24-hour news cycle at least...

    THIS is the correct answer.

Cheating on your wife shouldn't be this big a deal until you're running for President and in front of the microphone claiming what a wonderful family man you are. Hell, even Big Billy C. got away with it because he never labeled himself as a saint.

Is it impossible to love two people?

From the very little fuss made on her part, it almost sounds like the wife was told about it and really doesn't think it's a big deal - it's very likely she could see this woman as able to be something for Edwards that she could not and cannot, or some such. I have a feeling women on chemo and whatnot really don't much feel like getting busy, and sex is hardly the only way to show love.

/shrug, I dunno, I mean, yes, cheating is cheating, but if there are permissions given, then it's a different story.

^ except the fact edwards has repeatedly said he did not tell his wife about meetings with the mistress until after the fact, and is still doing the same thing (did nobody see the interview friday night...?). Oh yea, he is still seeing her for "management reasons" (lol 2 AM visits at a hotel room) yet refuses to tell his wife about it - you would totally do this if your wife were ok with it rite. Also, no support on your claims blah blah

I wasn't talking about the 2008 election septimus, for i feel edwards did change his tone a little. In 2004, the fact is he DID run as that family values man. The media gave him plenty of air time, especially when he was chosen as VP (hi2u specials on what makes him such a loving family man). I don't see why holding some people to higher standards is such a bad thing either. I'm sure the average grades are in the C range, but would you want your surgeon to have C grades? Most people are pretty bad drivers, so would you want your limo driver to have gotten in a bunch of accidents and had a lot of tickets? I don't want my politians, who are supposed to be the epitome of moral people, cheating on their wives. America feels the same way.

Cheating will never be acceptable, no matter how you spin it

I personally am disgusted with John Edwards, not because of the affair, because that itself is no big deal and many people cheat, but for going forward with his presidential bid knowing this was hanging over him. If he were the presumptive nominee right now, the Democratic party would be in chaos, the convention a free-for-all.

This is a huge betrayal to the people who support him politically. Gleaming example of ambition run amok.

The irony here is that our sitting president is an admitted C student and once fell off a Segway.

The further irony here is that promoting yourself as an intellectual with few character flaws makes you an enormous target of attacks of 'elitism' from the conservative right, immediately putting out 'out of touch' with the common blue-collar man.

Standards are fine if you apply them evenly and realistically. McCain divorced his wife after a 1 year relationship with another woman. 10% of the U.S. House of Representatives are divorced. It seems not all of America needs their government representatives to be flawless by an arbitrary moral or educational compass.
