    georgia and russia at war

    http://www.nytimes.com/2008/08/10/wo...tml?ref=europe

    this is serious stuff,

of course, not as serious as edwards cheating on his wife

I'm seriously thinking the networks are waiting for instructions on how to report this before dwelling further in. The only one who did anything resembling actual reporting was lou dobbs.

I can't seem to find a solid explanation. I have read that Georgia started it, Russia started it, that the area in question is an independent nation nation from both but primarily Russian, etc.

All I know is that apparently Georgia is pulling its Iraq troops (2000, the third biggest number of foreign help apparently) and Russia is pissed.

The region has a strong pro-Russia movement (which Russia likes, because if the separatists can gain control and secede, the region can join Russia, which mean more territory!) and Russia sent in its military to defend them when Georgia decided to solidify its rule after some of its peeps were killed by the separatists.

No, if you mean networks like fox and like they're designed to pander to their audiences. This doesn't directly, yet affect their audiences so theres no coverage of it. Thats how network journalism and Tabloids work. I hate when people take or compare stories from the times, as if their in the same class of journalism.

As for the war itself, its not /that/ serious considering theres been small conflicts in the region for decades and none never last too long. Just have to see how this one turns out.

georgian president is pro-western. Russia sees that as a threat. Russia is supporting the separatists because it wants western influence out of it's backyard. Now the georgians themselves, there is a huge disaproval of their president. There were riots before, which the president declared marshall law to put down. Of course, he's pro-west, so he's a champion of democracy.

Now what irks me is that mikhail knew there were russian troops stationed within the separatists regions, how the hell did he expect to attack it without retaliation? The big balls are being massaged by the west I bet.

Granted it's not big news now, but this isn't a small skermish. Russia is determined to thwart the georgian army, which means they either have to completely destroy it or route it. Georgia declared war against russia and it's a part of nato. I can't imagine US or any other country interfering, but it's a possibility. Potential war against nuclear powers? Not big news?

Its quite hard to understand what Saakashvili is thinking/expecting. Russia, as the powerful side have been waiting patiently for an opportunity like this.

It probably won't last long and end up taking Georgia a bunch of years back. NATO and other nations won't probably get involved as Georgia is the aggressor at this war.

I doubt it. Russia is at a loose/loose here. If they win against the georgian army, they will be seen as soviet era conquerers without respect for other nation's sovergnty. If they loose, it will seriously undermine russians military capabilities and hegemony in the area.

of course, this is loose/loose for georgia as well. They loose, which is likely, even with the American weapons and training and terrian advantages, they will be under russia heel.

The west stands to gain no matter what happens. Weaker russia either way.

Lose, Guartz, it's lose. My first thoughts about the skirmishes going on is that it will probably end up as just that. Another minor skirmish that unfortunately the civilians take the biggest beating from. If the Georgian Olympic team leaves as a result, you can expect that to put a fuckton of pressure on Russia. It will also attract a massive amount of media coverage as a result. Either way we'll just have to wait and see.

well I hope you are right. But russian blood was spilled, so they wont give up the region. Georgians won't give up trying to take it. This is already not a minor skirmish, just wait until next week when all the civilians are evacuated.

I think they belong to Georgia but they've been trying to go independent for a long time now? (This is purely based on my memory, I could very well be wrong.)

If that's correct then it should make no difference whatsoever that the Georgian army were the ones to attack first. Flip the situation around, if Georgia attacked a city within Russia they would be a smoking crater. So what makes it acceptable for Russia to invade a part of Georgia? Makes perfect sense for Georgia to say they are at war if a foreign army is within their borders. I may have to go on the wiki to read more about South Ossetia

Ok read up on it. They are attempting to break away from Georgia. As a result the Russians issued roughly half the citizens of South Ossetia Russian Passports. So now the Russians can use the passports as a reason to intervene. Except now according to the Georgian media, the Russians have made attacks against cities that are firmly Georgian and have no citizens with Russian passports.

So if what I'm reading is correct. What started out as the Russians "protecting" it's citizens is now turning into Russia branching out and attacking areas that are not disputed and are recognized as Georgian cities. The Russians response is that they are trying to "force" the Georgians to solve things diplomatically.
