Good lord, I thought for sure he'd gotten a silver, Phelps is just ridiculous. Record tied.

1 more to go, and that one is one the Americans (iirc) have never lost. I'm just worried about the incredible level of scrutiny this will put Phelps under. 8 golds in one games in this day and age will leave a lot of people wondering how he's done it.

    edit: ding, post 1000

Training and superior swimwear. Swimwear being the big factor.

On-topic: That 7th medal was really close. o_o Barely out-touched Cavic. But it seems the 8th medal is a formality though, given the Americans' history in the event.

Meh... Spitz did 7 races more then 30 years ago. It has less to do with swimwear and more to do with training and genetics.

Swimwear figures in with world records, but even there it's somewhat minor compared to other factors.

    Don't jinx it!!

Think about the symbolism winning that 8th gold medal would be: 8 gold medals, opening ceremony being 8/8/08, and it being 2008. Pretty cool. Also since iirc 8 is a lucky number in some asian countries.

They just showed a repeat of the race before the Costas/Phelps/Spitz interview. This interview has been pretty good.

Watched it at work with my partner. We were in shock. The reactions of his family, his coaches, and pretty much everyone there was priceless. It could not have been any closer, literally.

Well we can pretty much garuntee he's got the 8th in the bag, really this was the last bump in the road. I was saying for sure he'd get 7, and not 8, but now they have their best event in front of them and unless a DQ or something retarded happens, like a swimming injury (inorite?) then good for him. Grats on his cool mil from speedo by winning that 7th tonight. The million dollar race.

Well you better tell that to all the people covering the events who are saying the swimsuits are a big factor. They have been terrible wrong for so long
