wisdom teeth - the bane of your mouth.

So i got my wisdom teeth pulled this morning... doesn't hurt too much. My only question is that now i cant feel my lower lip and chin at all. making a bitch to try and eat and or drink.

anyone run in to similar shit or care to tell stories about the most bullshit dental thing ever.

You had your wisdom teeth pulled out? Does it involve them cutting away the gum covering it?

I ask because I may have to have my bottom 2 pulled out. Top 2 came in fine, but I have too many teeth in my lower jaw so those ones won't come through. One of the wisdom teeth in my lower jaw is like slightly poking out, and causes problems sometimes if I try chew with that side. Once it got infected and swelled up. Was so fucking sore.

well they cut them out... they knocked me out for it. I have a pretty fucked up jaw period since the right side of my molars don't touch the top. but on the x ray i looked like 2 of them where coming in fine. its like the do it for fun.

if there is gum covering your wisdom teeth (and there often is) you'll get them cut open.

Also depending on how old you are and how long you've waited to get them out, that's not even the worst of it. They often have to pulverize the tooth to extract it piece by piece.

So if you're not in the mood for some extremely uncomfortable dental surgery, get yourself put under for the procedure :D

If it's already caused an infection, then yes you need to get it taken out. Not only that, you're ruining your bite by leaving it unattended. There's nothing bad about getting your wisdom teeth out- enjoy spending a few days buzzed on pain meds.

@ Ace-o-fire: It's normal to have numbness for a few hours to a day after getting the teeth removed. The dental surgeon may have numbed the nerve to your mouth. If you don't get feeling back after a day, contact the dental surgeon to see if it's normal or something's going screwy. Anyhow, DON'T EAT SOLID FOOD FOR A COUPLE OF DAYS!. You may have stitching in your gum, and dry sockets are evil evil things. Follow the after-care instructions to the letter. I suggest if you're hungry, get a milkshake or something like Slimfast or Ensure.

How long since you had them pulled? That numbness and such could still be lingering numbing agents. You don't want to have your wisdom teeth to become impacted cause when they have to take them out it will be 10x worse than if you got it over and done with.

I had mine taken out last November and there are still dents in my gums from where they took them out. Have fun finding food stuck in the holes when you can eat!

I had mine pulled out around 7 years ago before getting braces. The only thing I really remember is eating a lot of mashed potatoes during those few days after I had it done. >.>

All I remember is seeing two of everything after I woke up, holy shit that was like that drug trip from that movie I saw while I was on that drug trip.

Also, that was the first of two times I've been prescribed vicodin, definitely fun.

I don't even have wisdom teeth, suckers!

I actually still have 2 of my baby teeth too (My brother does as well, lets blame it on some freak genetic thing). It always boggles the dentists mind when I go into see them and they x-ray my mouth. They always approach me like something is wrong "It appears that you don't have any adult teeth under these teeth here..." Glad I never had to get wisdom teeth out, all I've ever heard were horror stories from my friends. One of them had the sutures open and blood pour down his throat at night, then in the morning he'd wake up and puke blood. Sounds fun!

They had to pulverize my bottom wisdom teeth to get them out. Left a mess back there. The bottom ones are always the hardest. The top ones can come right out pretty easily (varies of course, but all 4 of mine were developed and started to impact).

I think you will be happy that your jaw is pretty numb for right now. And yes, AVOID DRY SOCKETS. Read your care manual or whatever they give you or tell you. Don't be a rebel and start eating McDonald's after day 1 (well, any solids). I had a nice big milkshake keep me for about 24hrs before I could eat yogurt and such. Just use a bib lol.

I'm pretty sure my dentist said I'd only be under a local anaesthetic. Not a big fan of general anaesthetics anyway, makes me feel so sick. It'll only get removed if I have more problems with it, which is probably quite likely. I've had normal teeth removed before.

I took vicodin for 2-3 months once, suckerrrrrr..

Also, I have 2 molars out... one came out perfectly, the other came down in pieces (doesn't seem to come out completely, but it is straight... they're both the top molars..)

My bottom molars are weird... one is just starting to come out now, but in an xray that was taken about a year and a half ago it seemed like it was leaning sideways, but now that it's coming out it seems to be straight... the 4th one is a mystery, i don't even feel it under my gums.

    Any reason to remove them?

I never needed braces either, my teeth are practically perfect so i'm not expecting that bottom molar to come out too badly.

I actually got my wisdom teeth pulled today too (nice birthday present!) My jaw really aches, but I'm not really feeling miserable. Was under general anasthetic, so all I remember is falling asleep and waking up with a mouthful of gauze.

They gave me the psuedo-twilight thingy and a local so i was awake but drugged. Then i freaked out somehow and flailed while they were extracting, resulting in my swallowing the 2nd tooth pulled, and having to go to the emergency room for a chest xray in case it went in my lungs...Fun.

Was on percocet for about 5 days.

Mine were coming in horizontal and pushing the bottom row of my teeth from each side, compacting them in the middle.

I actually didnt have any pain really... I got vicodin prescribed but usually forgot to take it. I still have some left now that I think about it...

I have the worst pain threshold and dental phobia ever and had to have one taken out after it caused me serious pain for years. Apparently I screamed the dental surgery down when they were trying to sedate me - but I remember none of this and it didn't hurt at all.

Just to counteract all the horror stories you hear - and I am a serious dental phobic.

Oooh fucking wisdom fag. Mine was infected and swollen, it came to a point that I wasn't able to talk or eat anything.

They gave me some medication for a week to get rid of the infection(had to stick with liquids and soup), cut it open then pulled it off. It does hurt on the day of operation(nothing unbearable though) and that's it. Just get rid of it as soon as you can, its something you shouldn't bother living with.

My wisdom tooth removal was a fuckin' breeze. Worst part about it was the "no eating the night before" shit like most surgical procedures. Every time I felt some pain post-removal, I'd eat another codine. Once the bottle was gone, I felt great. I was even nomming on solid noms the same day as the surgery. I just hated the feeling of the stitches dangling around in the back of my mouth, and as they dissolved and fell out, I gagged on a few.

Mine were probably 75% emerged when I had it done, it was just that my jaw is too small for my big ass teeth. I had 4 permanent teeth pulled just to make them fit when I was younger.

I remember trying to eat jello, i drop it from the spoon into my mouth, and then couldn't find it. Couldn't chew it or squish it with my tongue, so i had to use my finger. very weird
