Burtgang actually is the better sword by far, but to call Excalibur crap is ludicrous.

It has the highest base damage of any sword, randomly hits for 2.5x normal damage, added effect of doing 1/4 of your current HP in hate-free damage (good for RDM, bad for PLD) a decent WS (on anything that isn't high def) that gives a fairly potent Regen and a nice fat attack +20. 12.62 DPS is pretty damned nice too, even if Joyeuse beats it.

Burtgang on the other hand is still better for tanking. While Excalibur will do more damage initially, once you get the Aftermath rolling there's no stopping Burtgang.

10% less physical damage taken, less enmity lost when hit, enmity +10 on top of the Aftermath make for one broken as all hell sword. If what we've heard from the discussion thread is true, then it has a base OAT of 50% that goes up with higher tier Aftermaths (as does the attack and accuracy bonus and Atonement's damage) effectively allowing the PLD go to all DBZ on the mob's ass.


Excalibur is a good weapon to be sure, only a moron would bash it but Burtgang *rapes*

Its a bit too soon to say if burtgang will end up being superior DoT than excal. Depending on the acc/attack and DA given, the rate at which a person could accumulate 100 tp for atonement spam would dictate performance over excal, so we wont know for a while. Atonement is limited to magic/damage resistance as well.

This onetime I was a lowly noob in late 2004. BG had become a popular ls and I was curious about them. Because even one of their members Janice helped me get my pld af body and I thought "Hey these guys are cool". But then the inevitable started to take place. As all ls's do at one point or another they started go downhill a bit. So a bit later I asked a random BG member I saw in Lower Jeuno .. "LS still Strong?" and he replied.. The testing from Fan Fest indicates a 50% OAT though from Aftermath.

That alone puts Burtgang above Excalibur, never mind all the insane boosts that come with it.

The testing was not conclusive for DA rate from the many people that tried them. Some stated as low as 10%, some 50%+. Odds are it is heavily effect by aftermath level.

ok, i'll bite, you can replace a few pieces. pgorget idle->peacock amulet, ethereal earring->suppanomimi, whatever other earring you use->brutal, you should already be wearing a speed belt, homam and turban. if your MP is fine or you have a ghorn brd (we have 4, not having one in tank party is a rare occurrence) you can even switch ares's cuirass for homam corazza, and on top of this you can use dorado sushi. (OMG ENMITY FUCK YEAH) I do this regularly and maintain absolute hate aside from roar or a DD trying to kill themselves (spamming WS or 2hring, if you think macahuitl+1 changes this, kill yourself). ^you don't have to change everything I listed, you can mix and match accordingly before you try the angle of overplaying the stats lost from what I listed.


with no madrigal or hunters roll, I sit on ~85% accuracy on khimaira and cerberus, while usually parsing #1/solo tanking most of the time. parsed accuracy is lower on Tiamat because after 2 or 3 flights I don't pay attention to disengaging and my accuracy plummets.

being that those 3 fights are as much HNM as I fight along with SW/DI(which excal is pretty decent for a lot of SW NMs, but mostly shitty on ixion) since I don't try suckle at nidhogg/kb/aspi's teat anymore (have my shit/don't care to risk my account anymore), I consider my excal more than 'just a toy.'

maybe your paladins or ones you saw with excal were just shitty. its a common correlation that excal -> shitty pld. tekki, stanislav and I have parses and people to vouch that its pretty fucking strong if you aren't roundhouse. if I had to choose burtgang or excalibur I'd take excalibur in the blink of an eye. what other relic enables you to kill khimaira in just over 30 minutes with a single party? ugh, didn't realize this post was devoid of most literacy and all structure, oh well, i hope a piano falls on your family

Since there is talk about Excal and Atonement..

Recently we claimed Nidhogg at like 4 AM and we had a SCH and me for damage. I was lucky enough to get 2 bards so I was able to have Marchx2/Madrigal/Ballad and just with Excal+SCH (1 party, and yes I was also tanking) we had Nidhogg at 5% in about 18min, but we had to hold it for a while after that for a A body buyer to get there. (Yes, Atonement was helping the damage a lot).

Anyway I don't see why people are comparing Burtgang and Excal. Excal does decent melee damage even on Tiamat over time, but what makes it amazing is the procs and Burtgang doesn't have procs. They both are capable of doing Atonement.

Correct me if I am wrong please, but I don't see whats so amazing about Burtgang's aftermath and how it compares to Excal's procs.

Same as stan but corazza when we have a ghorn BRD in party and peacock amulet instead of torque (more accuracy, only care about proc), speed belt instead of sash, cerb instead of valor and homam in place of dusk, for DD I add in gigant mantle, bloodbead ring and bomb queen ring, blitz ring if I'm PLD for a zerg for some reason and have SV march (ala dynamis-tav boss, waste of time etc)

As far as damage goes, Excal would win imo, 2.5x dmg proc + occ. dmg proportionate to HP effect is pretty nuts. But you do not gain hate from that AE. so that in some sense doesn't really do anything for tanking other than killing the mob faster.

Burtang just simply focuses mostly on "tanking" while Excal focuses more on damage. Iiirc, the OAT from the Aftermath is highly dependant on the Aftermath level, and I think someone stated the % is not that high with a Level 1 Aftermath.

Personally.. I would say without the -25% from Aegis, Excal TP on Mob would make you take too much damage and not have stable mage MP. Also with Aegis you can ignore shadows once in a while to keep meleeing and not be afraid of taking some hits.

Anyway point I was trying to make is that its more efficient to get an Aegis for PLD because it helps in more situations then an Excal, and when you do get Excal after Aegis, then you also save MP from the AOEs.

Burtgang will only help you do better @ what you already do.. and probably only marginally better.

Excal on the other hand lets you do something that NOTHING else in the game will allow you to do.
