I loved Reload, except for maybe 3 songs.
I don't listen to any Metallica past ...And Justice for All except for the occasional plunge into the Black Album. I've always thought Testament was a better band imo and I very much prefer them over Metallica.
I guess I'm the only one who liked all their albums to date.
Granted, St. Anger was indeed the weakest one - I missed Kirk's solos, I LOATHED Lars's drum sound, and I thought vocally, James gave his poorest performance of their career. Honestly, his voice was at its best ca Black Album-Garage Inc. St. Anger made him sound like a prepubescent, squeaky pop punk wannabe. But I still loved a lot of the songs on the album.
I love this song, and I love Cyanide. I thought My Apocalypse wasn't quite as good as these two. The biggest treat to me, though, is that James no longer sounds as awful as he did around St. Anger. I'm stupidly excited for this new album. The title is incredibly lame - INCREDIBLY lame - but I'm still stupidly excited.
*waits for someone to bring on the hate over napster*
On the one hand.... Damn you guys for reminding me that they're still making music! I like to remember them fondly... as a great band that mysteriously disappeared before St. Anger was ever made.
On the other hand, even if this song isn't amazing, it still isn't as wretched as St. Anger, and Het's voice sounds pretty fucking good.
TORN.
i wish they could go back to the kill 'em all, lightning, puppets, justice and black album sound/lyrics but it can't/won't happen so my vinyls will have to do
I shall be downloading this album illegally just to make a point, to be honest. I miss Napster.![]()
High motherfuckin' 5 on that one. Testament, especially compared to Metallica past "And Justice", is far superior. They have their shitty songs too, and their old drummer was actually more of a snooze-fest than Lars is, but the rest of the band was and still makes Metallica look like a joke.
And despite every recent song sounding pretty much like every other song they've done, there is always Slayer. Metallica needs to get lessons from Araya and Co. on how to not be a big fucking gaggle of pussies and still shred 20 years later, and draw immense crowds to boot. Sure Slayer doesn't have toilets made of gold, but I can guarantee you those guys are still living fat, and they can probably sleep at night, as opposed to Hetfield and his band of fucking retards who must be haunted by their old fans chanting "what the FUCK happened to you?"
Decently good song, but nothing up to par of the old stuff.
whatever anyone says, he IS lackluster to say the least. yes I agree he inspired alot of young wannabe-drummers, but he wont get a reward for anything hes ever donesome ripping on lars
I vividly remember an interview with him at around the time of the black album where he said "Im not the drummer of metallica, Im the guy that plays drums in metallica" which is pretty much the only time Ive felt a sliver of respect towards him. They shouldve stopped making new albums after black album, that godawful mockumentary "some kind of monster" proved that.
Better than St. Anger (which isn't that hard to do) but nothing like their old stuff. Then again, they'll never put out the quality of music they did back in the 80's.
Fuck Lars.
Honestly, while there is some extremely badass songs on Ride the Lightning, I feel that they didn't hit their stride til Master of Puppets. I know quite a few people who disagree with on this, but viewing the album as a whole, I've never liked Ride the Lightning as much as the other 3 I mentioned.
The Black Album and ...And Justice for All both have some issues, but I feel they make a very good counterbalance to each other (Justice being overly complex in alot of songs, Black Album being overly simplistic.
And yes, nothing incites a crowd into a riot like Slayer taking the stage. Pantera was pretty much on par with that, though they had much much more ridiculous mosh pits.
I honestly think that someone in Metallica sold their soul for fame and fortune circa the Black Album, and that's why their work's been lacking something ever since.
Soul, namely. It just doesn't feel like metal, and much of it doesn't even feel like hard rock.
Unforgiven, Unforgiven II (how the fans feel about your new shit music), WHY GOD WHY IS THERE A UNFORGIVEN III WE STILL HAVEN'T FORGIVEN YOU FOR THE SECOND!
Fuck, -Lordi- plays with more heart than Metallica does these days. Never mind Testament, or Dave Mustane, half a billion European bands, Slayer, etc. etc....
As far as the newer stuff they've put out....I don't give a shit. They still blow the doors off any venue they play and are one of the few bands that are worth the price of admission and more to see live. That's all I really care about. They gave me 3 of the best albums of all time, and 3 more that are far above average.
Lars, although not great for a professional drummer, used to at least have some style to his beats. If you have it, take a listen to the live Seattle DVD from 1989 that's part of the binge and purge box set. That is the band at it's best and Lars doesn't dissapoint with his rythms here and this is the style that people liked about Lars. However, these days, he's nothing more than a drum machine keeping a beat for the guitars. The fact that he can't even play the double bass parts on Dyer's Eve is just sad.
how I like to remember Metallica: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=JQhEp-WlsHk
Kirk has always been a great guitarist. Hardly a suprise considering he was taught by Joe Satriani. He knows enough to keep his mouth shut most of the time too, while james is crying about his band mates not caring enough or lars bitching about napster or w/e, Kirk just stays shut and plays most times.
Back in the day he was too busy frying his brain with cocaine, now he's mostly just a surf bum when the band isn't in the studio/touring.
