That song was incredibly cliche and boring. The solo near the end was horribly written.

I've never really been a fan of Metallica aside from a couple of songs on Kill Em All. There are so many better thrash bands out there like Destruction, Kreator, Testament, Aura Noir and Tormentor that listening to a mediocre band is a waste of time..

slight necro and a bit late but a store in france sold the album too early (tuesday) and that afternoon it had made its way to the internet. fucking awesome, much better than load/reload/st.anger although that isn't saying very much. despite the songs being mostly 7 minutes, and the longest being roughly 10 minutes, none of the songs seem long in the sense that they are all very enjoyable, even a little spotlight on the bass, which is unusual for metallica with the exception of anesthesia (pulling teeth) on kill 'em all.

a lot of what I see in this thread is the bandwagon "it's cool to hate Metallica" rhetoric, if you're not a fan of the band then oh well but for "ex-fans" ppl that love to say "....I used to like metallica until X year (before I was born), you've either a) never heard the album or b) never heard the album

Hetfield's vocals have declined (understandable considering his age), but this is their best album since Justice/Black Album (depending on your opinion on the Black Album).

There's even some 2 hand tapping in one of Kirk's solos, which is awesome to hear in this day and age.

As much as I despise Load/ReLoad, Megadeth's album in the same timeframe are so much worse.

I love both bands, but Mustaine's vocals bother alot of people.

Metallica lyrics are either directly about simple things, or so nonsensical and obscure that it's never actually clear what the hell his songs are about. BUT WHATEVER IT IS, IT SOUNDS COOL. It's as if they write a song and they say, "shit, shouldn't way say stuff too? Ok what rhymes with this riff?"


Megadeth's lyrics are actually about something, which I find more appealing. It's like musical poetry.

I picked this album up yesterday at Best Buy along with RB2.. Like this album a lot. It's certainly a fuckton better than St. Trash Can Banger.

As has been posted already, Hetfields vocals have suffered a bit, and a lot oof the lyrics are quite laughable. The music itself I think is fantastic. This makes their last album forgiveable. Well...not completely. But it's a start.

Megadeth is still awesome, and their lyrics are a helluva lot better, but Mustaine's voice annoys the living shit out of me.

In regards to my comments above about Megadeth + Shitty album, I had the year of release on Risk wrong in my head. That album was such an utter piece of shit it makes Load/ReLoad look like shiny golden eggs.

For those interested, since this album has been getting flack for the production, there is a "remastered" version of it floating on the interwebs that is much better produced then the actual CD release. I leave it up to you to find it though, since it's quite illegal. For anyone who has Guitar Hero III, you can hear the differences between the album and the Guitar Hero III version, which sound markedly different.

Lastly, @ Guartz, have you ever heard the story behind how/why Mustaine wrote Holy Wars? It's kind of hilarious.

In April 1988, at a concert in Antrim, Northern Ireland, Mustaine unknowingly dedicated the final song to the IRA. Mustaine later alleged that he had been misled as to the meaning of the expression "the cause" by T-Shirt bootleggers outside the venue where they were performing. Before the final song, "Anarchy in the UK", Mustaine said, "This one's for The Cause!". A fight amongst the audience ensued and, according to Mustaine, the band had to travel in a "bulletproof bus" for the remainder of the tour of Northern Ireland and the Republic of Ireland. This incident served as inspiration for one of Megadeth's most well-known songs, "Holy Wars... The Punishment Due".
