Questions for JP players

If you wanna know if you're known by JPs, it's easy just google search your name in google.co.jp along with the word FFXI or something . Every now and then I do it for the lulz, to see what people are saying , although babelfish's mackarels and boiled frogs aren't very helpful, usually I get the gist of what they're saying though. I know my LJ's been linked to them before, so that alone indicates they're at least that informed on LJs.

For those who don't care to click the link, it was Genosync calling me an idiot for getting enhancing skill merits. Because, you know, RDM nuking is what all the cool kids do. If I am on RDM, it's not to enfeeble mobs, or cast Phalanx II on tanks (hey, enhancing skill helps that!), it's to nuke. (If only there was a mage job that specialized in black magic... I don't know what we would call it though.)

Why do your blm forget to nuke in exp parties? It gets annoying when i go to cure someone and my mp is wasted when a blm decided that they would curebomb the guy instead and they dont toss a single nuke either.

Is there any big names who you could say people idolize their gear, like Rukenshin, or people who actually look into the mechanics of XI like Kaeko does? (studio gobli comes to mind, but thats about all i can think of)

On a side note, do people still have an issue with JP Only? I thought that shit was dead lol, easily 7/10 invites i get are from JP and are 5/6 JP members. After i have xp'd with a few of them i can invite them into NA pts without a problem, but you definitely have to wow them to get them to come back or get return invites. Idk if this is a factor but i put NA/JP as languages and in the seacom i just say Japanese I can understand a little. And when they/I ask i tell them upfront im NA, and just list out the PT members...i can't think of the last time i've been shot down from a JP only lol, or has Bahamut's JP's gotten soft now?

I really want to know what's up with the JP only mentality when non japanese-speaking characters try busting their asses to try and communicate and then going all diva about them. I really don't know why they chose to stand for literally hours & hours while I eventually gather a party together and make decent/good exp.

This might be a server-by-server thing. On Sylph there are JP shouts for Nyzul, ZNM, random assaults, ENMs, Salvage... basically you can find JP shouts for nearly everything on any given day.

Great topic Elmer! I have a couple of Japanese friends ingame and they were a lot of help to me back in the day when i was getting started. I can't wait to see the responses to a lot of these questions (questions which I've had as well) from the Japanese community. Thanks!

On a related note, I've always assumed that you don't see JP players using the auto translate function nearly as much as you see NA players simply because the JPs don't want anybody who can't understand the shout responding. Is this true, or do they just really dislike Auto-Translate?

Same thing on Phoenix.

What I'd like to know is why Square set up /check to give that message in the first place. I mean, for starters, a JP player can't really expect to be insulted if I have to check him in the process of opening his bazaar, and I generally don't check people unless it's to open a bazaar (and sometimes that may just be an excuse). I have had a JP player once get mad at me for a /check when I was looking in his bazaar, and I was just flabbergasted as to how he expected anyone to look at his goods, or if he felt like he had to grant people permission to look at his 99M red rose or whatever the fuck it was.

But back to the point - if there is truly a culture-wide stigma against this sort of thing, then doesn't it seem that Square set us up to fail by making the text so intrusive? It's not exactly the same sort of unintended consequence as Reward, since it was a conscious translation decision.

Again, it isn't so much that /check is "stares at you" it's the context of it, an unasked check comes off rude among JP's, in the same way that uh... well, that one guy SS'd in the bazaar comment thread had "it is like peeking up a womans skirt"...

To which I respond 'I dunno about you guys, but I always ask before peeking up a womans skirt.'

As for the Kirin burn, it isn't about skill, or gear, I've seen burns with 2 or 3 fairly well equipped melees, and 10 or so fairly average AH type melees. I imagine 6 decked melees of your choice, if you could keep them all alive, could take kirin down with 2hred songs. The LS in question pretty much had the jobs up there, if one person went and swapped to Brd, they took the melees there, swapped em in, put a couple healers to curespamming, cakewalk.


Also, a lot of the reason JP don't like to party with NA is that even though english is generally taught in school, it isn't always a fully integrated second language thing.


Look at it this way, if you were on an English/Spanish mostly server, you spoke fluent English, and took two years of Spanish in high school, 6 years ago... you get invited to a party with 5 Spanish people speaking it fluently, it can get a little overwhelming.

As I understand it, it's also rather embarrassing apparently to have to try and use English and make big mistakes. Though we just laugh it off since we fuck up all the time too.

Had a Jp taru girl pop in a little shell I have some friends in, was just me and a good friend, and I was askin him about girls and stuff, kinda pokin at him like an older brother would, so we were talking about a friend of his with nice D tits.

Few seconds later, the taru girl pops up and is like "oh, interesting speaking!" so he is mortified.

I told him she probably didn't catch much of it, or understand much, and asked her if she did.

She says this, and I laughed for 2 minutes.

"I understood booooobs"
'lol!'
"I hoped I didn't know that word in english"

"booooobs"

(oo is pronounced like OH, so her husband had taught her to oooooo on those english words, so she types it like that too, which just makes me laugh picturing a taru girl saying "booooooobs")

So, try as I might, I haven't been able to post onto 2ch. Apparently, there are blocks on tons of hosts, even throughout Japan. I tried several different "2chan viewers" that are said to bypass this restriction, but I still get the same errors. I'm going to have to look for another relatively big board to post on, which I'm doing right now.
