Questions for JP players

For me when i search google.co.jp, i get all the NA posts i've done from here, to KI, and even when i posted on Alla some years ago.... but one thing did pop out...

Why is anyone who speaks english pigeon-holed into 'NA'. JP seem to think all english speakers are NA. I'm more curious about French/German and Spanish interactions with Japanese players, I think that's more interesting because it's less common.

My brother used to be very motivated in teaching himself how to communicate with JP players in FFXI. He's always been more of a social player then one who wants to get the job done. Eventually he managed to get some basic phrases written down and one of the phrases he wrote down was to tell the JP that he's from the netherlands. According to him JP usually found it really intriguing.

I don't know exactly why but he's always had a much easier time getting in parties then I did. Though I'm pretty sure its a combination of him taking the effort to try and speak JP and the fact his name has a much more JP sound to it, Ryosuke (taken from Initial-D, I think).

Last time I was in a pickup party (I'm RNG70, since abouuuut 2005) I was replacement for someone and it was the JP who said "(Last Boss)(I'm Sleepy)" at 4pm in the afternoon HIS TIME, even though I improved the party flow a lot when I took over pulling from the THF72 puller who was pulling slow as hell with everyone 80%+ MP all the time.

I'm kinda the same way as your friend since the server I started on has a high Japanese population. Through the friends I have there I managed to learn a few words/phrases to say (Congrats, I'm Back, Welcome Back, etc). Most seem impressed with my limited Japanese knowledge, but I think I've partied with 1 that didn't like me saying it, so that's why I was curious about what they think about English players speaking Japanese.

Also, I'm pretty sure my name helps with getting Japanese parties as well. I'll get tells in Japanese and I'll usually reply saying I don't speak Japanese, and they'll either say Sorry or ask my to party in Auto Translate/limited English.

As for the person being tired at that time of day, he could just be on a different sleep schedule. My schedule is basically the opposite of most in that I'm up at night and sleep during the day.

Regarding the different playstyles, it's not a huge thing, but it is there for the most part. As mentioned, there are alot of NA/English players who pull the "I got to go in 5 mins/now" crap whereas Japanese parties (from my experience) do end at certain times. Most notices I see are at least 30 mins in advance, but I don't see a problem with 15 minutes either if the party's been going on for awhile.

Tomiko is a pretty easy name to get a JP party with, Silenka isn't bad either since aside from the l it has some japanese-ish sounds in it.

As for the 'I gotta go in 5 mins'... I've had plenty of JP players just up and leave with no warning and the ever-ironclad excuse of "JP lunchtime" -.- So I don't really know how they can turn around and imply that we're the only ones who leave with short/no notice, because they do it too.

I've tend to notice JP parties like to have 3 mage 3 melee combo more than the 2 mage 4 melee combo. Anyways, can't wait to hear the anwsers and possibly questions for us.

Maybe because all of Japan falls under a single timezone, and the rest of the party would legitimately understand as lunches are a way for families to reconnect...or, and I'm taking a guess here, 'JP lunchtime' is probably an excessively polite way of saying 'someone in this party sucks, everyone's already confirmed it through /tells, so let's break now with some lame excuse and regroup in five with someone more competent.'

I've seen some JP shouts (and sometimes taking them), and I always wonder:
Why do JP shout for a missions/party/BCNM up to a week before they actually do it? and why do they shout such events with a specific starting time?

After moving here myself alot of stuff has sort of made sense on its own, like JP onry and /check etc, but like... if you have 6 ppl interested in a mission, why not go do it like... right now? lol

My 2cents though; if you use IME and even if you dont know any japanese, get a friend to teach you the 1 or 2 phrases you'll need to get yourself into such JP only parties. Also get them to teach you how to write a JP-style /seacom. Even when I only started learning japanese, I had so many parties convinced I was JP purely because I played the "Strong and Silent" type.

Also, knowing how to ask "Wouldnt you like to come party/merit?" in Japanese is a killer awesome line, itll get you far in ingame-life.

Edit: Also, another question. What is the JP view/opinion/w.e on non-NA Foreigners? I myself, and a bunch of my friends are Australian and are stuck lvling/events in JP timezone, but (typically) most are quick to assume that foreign = American.

I usually get 3 reactions: - "Your foreign? Thats awesome!"
- "WHAT?! Your foreign? Oh, your Australian? oh I guess thats ok then"
or - "Oooh *poke*"

I don't buy this bullshit and I never have. Look at the English version.. "Examine". As if examining isn't looking at something in detail or up close. That would be just as rude.

Personally I'm french and play mostly in EU time zones. I never PT in NA times anymore ( past midnight my time anyway), because people indeed play differently. I've been deceived by the quality of NA pts over the last years. As someone mentionned a lot of NA don't have good manners. Like people just sending you '{party}?' tell when they wanna pt, not even bothering making a sentence ( anyone notice that lol?). You always seem to get people that quit the pt after like 30 minute into camp, people keep replacing themselve, can't reach a camp without dying three times. I find it very rude. Also its hard to find pt in EU time because it's a dead time for the servers...

So when I pt for example, I only do it at JP times now ( I speak a bit of JP, and it's afternoon my time), and it's indeed really different from NA. All pts starting and ending at the same time and lasting 2-3 hours w/o replacement is realy good. I enjoy also all the pickup shouts during JP times, there is a lot of stuffs to do, and you don't see that a lot in other time zones, that's real sad. I did a lot of salvage pickups for example. I wish I lived in Japan and could do all those pickup events every night lol.

Well I sometimes just say "pt?" and I don't mean anything by it. I'm just polling interest. I just think certain individuals (not even marking it up to culture) are more easily offended than others or just interpret things differently.

Also, one thing I noticed form the times I pt'd with japanese is that they tend not to look for replacements and don't say they're leaving until they're either collapsing from exhaustion or 1 minutes before they need to head to work/school. Maybe it's a language barrier thing, I dunno.

I started out a little before NA release on JP PS2. The first 3 years I knew FFXI in nothing but JP.

Sometimes I really had a hard time with things. But the JP way of PT was so comfortable for a new player. Start together, get led into the area, then end together. I was happy to reach around sneaks and inviibles into every direction and PT member possible. When the new NA people entered the game I was happy at first since I would be able to find a PT later at night. But their manners and PT style wanted to make me throw up at that point. Everyone ran off alone. People didn´t care if their PT members died from aggro. Wouldn´t stick together, left whenever their dog barked etc.


Does anyone rememeber the effort some JP players put in at the NA release? I remember some would make a post on NA forums about JP manners and the way the JP people party. Instead of saying "thanks for the help and hints" the reactions on the NA boards ended up more like "The JP are trying to force us into their ways!" "We pay for this game - we do what WE want - fuck them"


I continued to level up pretty much JP onry to 75 WHM. It was quite comfortable. Bring able to type hiragana on my PS2 helped tons tho. Also JPs find Germans incredibly awesome.



Nowadays my PS2 has died and I´m using Xbox for the every day leasure game. I´m still 50% active during JP time. I am still trying to do Assaults, ISNM, ZNM and more with the JP shouts. /telling them in romanji leads to success around 70% of the time.

Last week I joined about 6 Assault shouts. But one of my /tells for ISNM got outright "JP only" blocked when I offered my WHM and NIN. I told him "naruhodo - ganbatte kudasai" (I see - good luck!) and let it be. Sure enough the same guy was still shouting for a WHM 45minutes after :D

If you get JP onlyd just wish them good luck and let it be. Getting a polite reply from a foreigner sure burns them on their soul more than getting any kind of hate tell back.

It doesn't say examine. It's pretty much exactly the same text as /stare except instead of it saying "Person stares at Kuno" (which is the emote) it will say "Person stares at you" (which is the check).
