    go there.

Follow instructions to make a LiveCD to try it out. Then, if you like it- install it.

FFXI doesn't run under Linux unless you're using Windows Emulation

Vista doesn't suck, sorry that YOU are having issues with it though. It runs like butter on my machine.

Almost none of that has anything to do with your OS. I can say that simply running as admin is not a fix-all for the stupid restrictions placed on files/actions.

Need to go to Control panel and disable UAC through security I believe.

    Intel core 2 1.83ghz
    2046 ram
    32bit operating system

Just install XP and be done with it. Back up everything you can possibly want, wipe everything, install XP. Judging by your knowledge in these posts it might be quite unwise for you to go with anything else, so just get XP and have a peace of mind.

I wasn't trying to be rude, but it's easy to tell and I think for a "better life" it's much easier to just install XP, tweak it a little (tons of guides out there), and everything should run quite smooth. If you tried to put something like Linux on there you might be more stressed overall.

I have nearly the same spec laptop as you and I run XP as well. Except for the 300gig hard drive.

Unless you play some of the absolutely newest games (unlikely with your graphics card, I don't think you're looking in that area), XP will play more or less any game pre 2007. I installed Devil May Cry 4 (demo) on my laptop the other day and was surprised it worked, after a bit of down tweaking, and it was quite smooth.

Do you have XP disks? Or are you doing it the "other" way

The first thing I noticed is you've got a pretty weak processor / RAM setup for Vista to run on full settings. If you're running Vista Aero and trying to play a game at the same time, I could see it easily slowing down. As Stig has said, XP is probably your best bet but reformatting from Vista is pretty difficult. I use Vista Home Premium SP1 on my Desktop and I love it, but I tried Vista Business on my Laptop and reformatted back to XP. Vista isn't exactly the prime OS for laptops yet as it sucks battery like a cheap whore sucks ...you know, which is said since Microsoft is only shipping Vista now.

Anyway long story short, when you go to reformat you might have some issues doing so in Vista since there is protections in place. Once you've obtained a copy of Windows XP, you might want to try DBAN (Darik's Boot and Nuke) to fully format the HDD. For some reason, Vista Business on my laptop would not directly format the C: drive even through booting in DOS and trying numerous other methods. The quickest way for me, was to DBAN the whole thing (after backing everything up) and then insert the XP disc to start XP installation.

If you're looking for a website, www.removevista.com has a semi-walkthrough on how to go about doing it. Oh, and for the love of god if you keep Vista don't disable the UAC because that pretty much nullifies the reason to have Vista.

I don't know how it would work with one of those Sony Vaio "All-In-One" PC's

but for alot of newer sony laptops, its a real pain to install windows XP on sony machines as sony doesn't support any xp drivers for their newer hardware.

I would search around for all the drivers (Graphics, HDD, Sounds, Mobo etc...) obtain all of them before installing XP.

Wow, thanks for the information Octa, Jmc, about Sony laptops and Vista. I really didn't expect any of that.

Note to self: Not buying/recommending Sony laptops to any of my "clients" =p

My dell came with Vista 1 year ago, I got rid of it pretty easily by killing all the partitions and merging it into 1. So I didn't know about the issues Vista would present on current laptops.

Yea, I wouldn't buy Vaio's for anyone honestly. Sony laptops are a pain in the ass to work on. I've been able to perform maintenance myself on DELL laptops as they're pretty straightforward. Any sony laptop i've tried to deal with gives me multiple issues with how they setup their hardware...

Ya, I tried installing windows XP on my laptop..... but low and behold I needed a driver for the XP install disc to pick up my HDD to install. I ended up having to get a "compaq/HP" driver because they used the same sata setup on some of their laptops.

Then came trying to install the drivers.... found the video card with no problems, but the sound card was such a pain that I just went back to Vista lol

The first thing you should look for when buying a laptop is XP drivers, before you pay.

Meh, Vista is not horrible, but anyways. What's your pc's model? I'm pretty sure there are XP drivers for it, my Vaio too came with vista but was able to install XP. I highly recommend XP, has not given me a single problem like ever.

Um, sony does support XP on their notebooks. I have a SZ650N and branded Sony discs with all the drivers for XP Pro on them.
