RDM Tanking Experiment

qft qft qft. RDM tanking is pretty standard in AV, and we have more than one Hauteclaire/Ares/etc PLD.

RDM tanking is incredibly popular on our server as a whole; all the worthwhile shells do it. Just be careful who you're co-tanks are, because you'll find yourself with a lot more CE than a PLD or something would have later in the fight when you're up against like, Khim/Tia/Cerb, you may wanna let them shark cures off of you. Also, let that determine which weapon(s) you're using.

To establish hate, you'll be using Sleep and Sleep II primarily with Dispel and Bind, you really don't even have to cure much or use Blind or Poison for VE. You won't go near your ninjutsu unless you're using too much MP.

I have a very good Co-Tank in mind. Although my LS has some pretty decent tanks, Furbs is the best. >.o

I typically open with Sleep 2 > Sleep 1 > Dispel > repeat a few times, Sleep 1&2 are the best hate/MP spells you have, Dispel is same hate as Sleep 1 I think but slightly more MP, though a much faster recast timer obviously. Properly hasted, Sleep 2 should be about up again by the time you cast the next 2 spells assuming you recast Utsusemi 1-2 times in the cycle as well.

If building TP through melee/opo necklace is an option at the time an opening Spirits Within is really nice as well. Once hate is pretty firmly established in terms of CE(probably about 30~ total casts of Sleeps/Dispel) I just stick to Blind spam.

Now with Omega, and well any NM's how do you keep hate when DD/Melee and the BLM's are doing massive amounts of damage? Would the built up enmity from sleep/sleep2 and dispel be able to control it? Or would I need extra help with a TA or two?

The beauty of Sleep/Dispel is they build equal amounts of both CE and VE, assuming the DDs give you a few moments to do a few hate cycles before they go batshit crazy on the mob, you shouldn't have much problems with them pulling hate unless they're just being meatheads. I'm many times honestly surprised at how well I can keep hate even when taking a beating, Tan's had to actually run to the other side and Cover me to keep me alive at times, lol.

Edit: And obviously you still need to keep up your hate cycles throughout the fight, but you can get less spammy as it goes on assuming you aren't taking a lot of damage. Blind is great for keeping your VE up, a good chunk of it as well as low MP cost and low recast timer. I usually do about 11 cycles of Sleeps/Dispels, then just stick to mostly Blind spam with a few Sleep 2's tossed in here and there.

On topic; We have too many PLDs to use RDMs for tanking, but a few have expressed interest and I'd personally direct them to Belkin's LJ myself... that's all you need to know right there.

It's not being willing to gear up, most of them talk to me and purchase/camp the things that they need, but I'm pretty anal about my builds and most of our tanks are fairly new to endgame tanking so there's a big experience gap.

If they just flat out sucked at tanking, well, I wouldn't let them tank stuff while I stood around watching.

Must be nice to be on your server. The only way to get anyone to let you tank on Asura is to join an idiot, bottom-of-your-shoe linkshell. Any of the more "established" linkshells just laugh, and assume you're kidding. =/
