Just do it anyways, come to event's /anon and everythingOut tank your plds, show them what's up. If you can't out tank them... then yeah, dont bother.

Do RDMs capped Genbu's Shield block rate with +shield skill set ? (~200 shield skill)
I think it's worth casting Utsusemi Ichi with shield rather than Terra's staff or dual Maha+1.
Genbu's is a size 1, so you shouldn't need +shield set to cap block rate I would think.
But RDM doesn't have Shield Mastery, so a block won't prevent spell interrupt.
I QQ over this more than you could imagine. When I initially started tanking I was hoping to go Sword/Shield before I remembered that the interrupt thing was Shield Master only. That said, with Warlock's Chapeau/Duelist's Tabard/Loq. Earring, you honestly shouldn't any issues fitting even an Ichi cast in between swing rounds of almost any mob.
I meant to reply to this yesterday, but RDM/PLD would be an even better choice for JoL, imo.
Flash, Refresh, HP+, MP+, Cover, Sentinel, Shield Bash, Holy Circle, and more.
RDM/NIN gives you shadows, of which more ofthen than not JoL is casting -Ga's, so it's not that useful...
And shadows negate hate.
Now, truthfully, I've never done RDM/PLD as it's not a sub for me yet, but I understood the physics behind it and wanted to give it a try, with belief that it'd be the ultimate choice for a RDM's sub in this fight.
My ls leader is fully supportive of this since, if I succeed he gains another tank. And if I failed, at least I tried. It never hurts to try something new. ^_^
As for subbing PLD, yes that does sound feasible so I'll probably give that a try too.
For intents and purposes, a PLD/RDM would be a better choice than RDM/PLD. On JoL shadows are worth more than you may think. There are a sufficient amount of Tier3/4 casts by JoL to warrant RDM/NIN. And honestly, Flash/Sentinel/etc... in the course of a JoL fight is unnecessary unless someone dies and you're filling in and need to pull hate quickly; in which case a full convert will get you back into things fairly quickly. As far as RDM/NIN mainstream goes on Asura, we're a bit "behind the curve" you might say. It's not that we can't, we just don't choose to for most ocassions. The only place I could see my LS trying to utilize it may be Tiamat. Pushing 30 min kills really threads the needle with PLD/NIN to BLM hate. Right now it's more of a "if it's not broken, don't fix it" type of deal.
As far as gear goes, you should really not worry too much about full haste/enmity/mag/def sets. You will never be able to inventory all at once and all the blinking just becomes too cumbersome. Yeah there's BlinkMeNot, but not everyone has it and even if they do, it's really not worth it in the end. I tend to stick to a hybrid build of whatever I plan to fight, with an "oh-shit" on the side.
Here's a list of what I use. I'm not listing full gear sets, but each type broken out as I mix-and-match based on my target and co-tank.
Enmity
Macuahuitl+1 x2
Ritter Gorget
Resentment Cape
Mermaid Ring
Haste
Wlk. Chapeau +1
Nashira Manteel (I don't own AF2 body)
Dusk Gloves
Nashira Seraweels
Nashira Crackows (1% haste is minimal but if MP isn't an issue, every bit helps)
Swift Belt
Magic -% (far from finished, but I've yet to do Ultima on RDM, this is more of an off-shoot of my PLD)
Lamian Kaman
Coral Scale Mail
Duelist's Gloves
Coral Cuisses
Merman's Earrings x2
Merman's Ring
Shadow Ring
Resolute Belt
Resentment Cape
Defense -%
Terra's Staff
Full DS+1
Jelly Ring (not used for JoL for obvious reasons)
Shadow Mantle
That is what I'm worried about too is the huge amount of inventory space while juggling my normal RDM gear. I'm assuming IF I am going to be tanking, I just bring my tanking gear, and if I'm not tanking, just bring my normal gear. I play on a PS2 so my options on gear swaps is going to be limited to what ever I can fit into my pallets.
The only thing that would really break my inventory was a resist-X set, really. Haste/Enmity are both part of a hybrid general set, due to the fact that this particular style of tanking doesn't really warrant shifting between the two for different actions, unlike Paladin a Ninja, who both have job abilities where they can stack massive amounts of enmity to get the full potential of, and also because Ichi is never difficult for us to get up.
If you're tanking (not soloing), 95% of the time there's no reason to bring enfeebling/nuking sets. I'm very adamant about this, but your job (as a tank) is to focus on surviving while keeping hate. With this, that also means there should be a support RDM in the tank party to haste/refresh you. Your group should treat you just the same as any other tank.
All that gear I mentioned in the previous post is just a general idea of my options. By no means do I ever carry it all at one time, so inventory (for me) usuall sits around 60-65/70.
Here's some SSs of my RDM tanking equip:

Put in Duelist's Gloves for when I have Shell 5.
and then put in 5/5 Darksteel +1, Jelly Ring, Terra's Staff, Umbra Cape for those Oshit moments.
Edit: I'm am a Taru, so I try to add as much HP+ as I can. I sit at about 1150 HP w/o food.
I keep Enfeebling gear on me when tanking, and dump all my Elemental/Dark stuff. Really I wouldn't bother with resist sets, that's where it gets to be too much on the inventory, and realistically you can get by just fine with 50% reduction since you can contribute to curing yourself a fair amount of the time.
I say they just make it so we can carry 100 items. >_>; If not that, equipped items don't count towards inventory space. But yea, this looks like its going to be a lot of fun. ^_^
Tarmo, as someone who also doesn't own a pair of Nashira legs, don't you think it would be more beneficial to wear your Coral+1? If I had a Dusk+1, I'd probably wear those, just by virtue of the fact that its such a lovely amount of HP in a generally useless slot, but I figure, if you've got nothing good to put there, you may as well toss in the MDT-%.
Crimson is a pretty solid piece in that slot, relatively high defense, marginal resist boosts, and a good chunk of HP/MP, I usually just stick to that.
We're doing Ultima tonight, I have my fingers crossed for Nashira legs to drop. I'm also up for fast pants so the tanking will have to wait till after I get both. ^^;
It's not anything you can't do with Warlock's Tights(+1) tbh, legs are just a slot where you can press a little extra. Depending on buffs the Haste from Nashira may not even be necessary as if you're sharing March/Ballad with a PLD you're likely to cap out recasts without them.
I have Warlocks +1 Hat, Body and Legs, Nashira Body too. I also have the NQ counterparts of the HQ I have in armor storage.
Really the only harder-to-get piece I'd say I wouldn't try it without is Duelist's Tabard, but Goliard Body would be a decent enough replacement.
To Kap(KI) I actually have Nashira legs lol. I reach the max Utsu recasts w/ Chapeau, Tabard, Swift(macro), Loq. earring(macro), and the 2 pieces of dusk I use while tanking. I probably should have included my Utsu macro too.
Edit: Forgot to mention x2 Marches too. So I cap recasts.
