Kuya is right though, it really has nothing to do with the FFXI development process. The Japanese just love their borrowed words. Heck, sometimes they even spell out Japanese words in Katakana just to make them stand out for emphasis.

Japanese takes a lot from English, of course, but English itself is mostly taken from other languages from Greek to German. Most modern languages are created from cross-pollination. Japanese just sound funny when they do it since the form of their language is so different. Well, that and the fact that we basically rebuilt Japan so there is a lot of American influence in Japan.

Seriously, check your international channel for tagalog programming. We occasionally get it and it is always so weird to understand like every other word.

From watching various TV shows, I've noticed the word　きれい is usually written in katakana, despite being a Japanese word. Written that way for emphasis and because appearently no one likes to read the kanji for it.

Tagalog as in the language of the Philippines? Weren't they colonized by the US? Assuming they mostly only borrow English words, then that's to be expected. (i think the Japanese even borrow words from French, and Mandarin, i think).

The Japanese borrow words from everywhere, although they borrow a lot from English.

The Japanese word for part-time job is German (アルバイト) "Arbeit" for example.

A quick google search of Tagalog shows they also borrow a shitload of words from Spanish, French, etc.

New article from 1up with the Dissidia development team, mainly about the selection process for bringing Shantotto over (apperently Prishe was also considered, so their definatly looking beyond just the base game). Good news is that we will likely see some FFXII characters in the game as well (go go Balthier & Cid). As for 13, since that's still in development it's highly unlikely we'll see any characters from it.
