So I ignored all games while playing FFXI and I've had zero interest in RPGs since I quit FFXI because of FFXI. Introduce me to Final Fantasy DIssidia.

I never guard actually, I always just dodge. Learning to play while everything is GUARD CRUSH makes me dodge instinctivly instead.

I was the same for a while, mostly since I was using Terra at first where you don't really want to get too close unless you're using Tornado. But after playing around with melee characters it is REALLY helpful if you can guard stuff. Since it almost guarantees you some crits with the follow up which do shitloads of damage.

Of course with Terra there's no need to guard at all, you can pretty much beat Chaos without getting hit once with Meteor spam and one shotting him with Meltdown.

every single time I get hit and killed/almost killed by his move that he surrounds you with fire balls, then a pillar of fire comes down then he comes crashing down giving you no chance to dodge once your knocked in the air. about 50times ive fought him and ive seen his 3rd form once. I'm level62... think I just need to try a different character.. whcih i'll have to level alot cause next highest char is lv14. I'm currently using Butz.

which summon do you guys use btw? normally I use Ifrit or magic pot for this fight, but I'm getting sick of it being wasted on the 1st form most of the time.

i say level up to 100 using the lv up trick thing, i beat all the story things with warrior of light and inward chaos with shantoto

Gotta admit, Tetsuya Nomura really do have a distinct style and unique to himself. I like it and I think it's really stylish. I wish he'd design more characters with armors.

in his timeline popping your collar up never went out of style. the next trend after that was an evolved form of the collar pop that involved extremely large collars.

Butz has Firion's Axe toss, that shit is all you need on Chaos. I made a video of a quick fight with him (using Firion), had a sloppy start and fucked up the last EX Burst, but whatever. No audio 'cause if I'm recording it I can't hear anything myself, and using audio cues on some of his moves helps a shitload. Maybe it'll help you regardless:

yeah thanks. video helped a lot. I was just being too impatient. I just beat him. I still have an incredibly hard time with the move that surrounds you in fire that you have to block perfectly, then dodge before he crashes down on you.
I was so pissed. on his 3rd form, he had 1HP. I used Storm Hazard which broke his brave and knocked him to the ground, and I followed up with Whirlwind blade to kill him. He's getting drawn in, and im getting closer and he uses the move where he gets giant. my sword actually connects with him and hit him for a full second, but he's apparently untouchable once he starts that move.

So I just downloaded the game and I got to the 3rd little checkerboard thing with Tidus. I'm level 4 now, and I began a battle with this little red guy who is Lv 14 and is owning the fuck out of me.

Is this guy a special mob or should I just continue on without fighting him?

There's some fights where the enemy will have next to no HP but start with huge brave, EX gauge full, etc. Is it that or one of the 4 sword knights that are just hard as fuck but regular fights? If it's the former just try and get a couple of HP attacks in and he should die without you having to bother with brave attacks. If it's the latter you might want to skip them if you're having trouble with it, they're made to be really hard (way higher level than you, good gear and a high AI level).

well, youre lv4 and theyre lv14 as you said. just skip it for now. it's really not worth the effort at the moment. you'll need to play through it again anyways to get 100%.
higher level fights are annoying without good summon support, depending on the character.
though once you get into the lv90's, get used to spending a majority of all the fights just running and dodging.
I'm lv100 fighting lv100-110 people and they seem to be able to get 9999brave just by hitting you once.

I think I've cried like a bitch multiple times trying to get Hero Skull's from the Ultimate Course today. After about an hour or so of playing I gave up after losing 3 fights in a row (Chaos, level 115 then a level 112 Boss). Saw one Hero Skull but was 3 medals short of being able to buy it, so now my grand total is up to 0/5 for my Ragnarok.

Yeah it sounds like I ran into one of those 4 sword knights. It sucks because he's guarding a little treasure box. Oh well, guess I'll just come back.

The gameplay is a lot more satisfying than I thought it'd be. I was having a lot of fun just getting my ass handed to me by that OP knight thingamajig.

I use a combination of the wiki and this guide on GameFAQs. If the moonspeak doesn't show up on the GameFAQs guide just go to View > Character Encoding and change it to Japanese.
