Titan Quest + FFXI = DC

Here's a weird problem maybe someone can help with; I haven't investigated it myself because I've no idea where to start. When I tab out of FFXI to play Titan Quest, I lose connection on FFXI. I'm really not sure why, or how to make it stop dcing me every time. I know FFXI isn't meant to run in the background of anything, but I don't see why it would dc just for this one program, and not any others (zoomplayer, firefox etc all fine). It doesn't always dc me right away either, sometimes it takes a fairly long time, but the time is variant.

Hoping it's a simple fix that I just didn't know about, I would like to play TQ with FFXI still running...

And before I get lynched, yes I play Diablo II as well but this one's more fun solo than Diablo.

Is TQ changing your screen resolution?

Do they use the same ports?

You mean for online play? I don't know...I don't play TQ online and have never attempted to connect it to the internet. Is there a way of checking? I never set it up in my router for TQ to be on a specific port, nor FFXI as far as I recall.

Just trying to go down the list of obvious causes, do you get any error messages or just r0?

Latency kicks in while TQ is in the front, sometimes it bounces right back when I click back to FFXI and sometimes it just dies horribly. Then it gives me an error and sends me back to the character select screen. Let me see if I can dig up which error it is.

    [edit] Error code: FFXI-4001
No response from the Final Fantasy XI server.
    Connection timed out.
    Press OK to shut down.

Well thank you for trying to help nonetheless ^^

I'm no pushover when it comes to PC problems either, so we need someone smarter than both of us, lol.

The UDP ports that TQ uses are:
    42,800
    49,152 – 49,172
    49,272 – 49,292

Port numbers that may be used by the PlayOnline server group.
    TCP 25.80.110.443 or 50000 - 65535
    UDP 50000 - 65535

hmmm so its not that..., are you using se windower or the other windower? did they ever fix that priority thing where if your main FFXI window is sent to the back ground it dies off? if not try using the priority plugin >.>; or maybe TQ is kikcing stuff off your network thats using traffic for some reason, or your ISP is like "omg lotsa suspicous traffic time to cut connections!" or something

Does TQ have a windowed mode of its own? I've noticed that unless you have that enabled on other games, FF11 (Even with the official windowed mode- great job at failing SE) will crash.

    XP Home SP2

    Other windower.

My ISP couldn't give a shit less about what's going on on my end, that's part of why they're awesome... but it might have something to do with my router.

    TQ is running in fullscreen, I don't know if it has a windowed mode but even if it did I wouldn't use it. >.>;

Thanks for the replies guys, a lot of good ideas where there previously were none. I'll look into the priority plugin...

That's why. See my previous post. FFXI will *NOT* run with another fullscreen application.

I see, that's too bad, I guess I'll just have to deal with not being able to have them both open at once then (unless I find a windowed size I don't hate).

Here's an update and a resolution:

Well KG hit the nail on the head, priority plugin lets FFXI run in the background of another fullscreened program. I should have thought of it before, but I guess that's why tech support is here

In any other circumstance, it seems that indeed FFXI would not run with another fullscreened game, but using Windower + priority FFXI doesn't feel like disconnecting anymore ^^
