I have two that I can remember. I generally don't buy into ghost stories, and both these stories have logical possible explanations, but I still wonder about them.
----
The house I grew up in had a full acre yard and was completely surrounded with trees on all sides (it was just slightly lighter on the side that faced the street). About in the middle of the back yard was an apple tree that grew kind of slanted.
I was told not to climb it, but I was about 6 and decided it needed to be climbed. My mom was doing yard work in the front yard and my dad worked nights and was asleep. I make it about 8 feet up and I chicken out and start climbing back down when I slip. I somehow get a broken off stub of a branch jammed through my pocket. So I'm hanging from this tree by my pocket about 4 feet off the ground.
Despite my best efforts, I couldn't get unstuck. I started panicing and crying out for help. The front yard started about 75 feet away, and the nearest neighbor house was about 400ft away. Finally I see a guy squeeze through some trees and jump the fence and run over to me a minute later. Our family's three dogs, who were very protective of me when I was little, didn't try to stop him. He pulled me out of the tree right about when my mom came rushing up. I thanked him and he walked away.
Several years later I mentioned this story to my mom, but she looked at me puzzled. Then told me that no man got me out of the tree and it was just her. I thought back on it and remembered that I didn't recognize the man at all. I never saw him when trick or treating on his street. He also arrived very quickly. My mom couldn't move very fast due to an injury, but she was much closer than he could have been.
Thinking about it logically tells me that either I misremembered the events or my mom did. Or the man was somebody that my mom didn't want me to know and denied his existence. Sometimes I find myself wondering who that man was, though.
---
My dad died after being in the hospital for a month. I was there when he died. That night, at about 4AM I'm taking the trash out to the curb. About 25ft from the end of the driveway I see a white dove (or pigeon, or shit-hawk) just standing in the center of the driveway.
I don't think too much of it until I pass near it, towing a garbage can on wheels and it doesn't fly off. I keep going and put the garbage near the curb and start walking back. I walk up to the bird, this time getting about a foot away from it and squatting down right next to it. I look at it for a while and it turns its head and looks at me, making no effort in escaping. I shine a mini-LED flashlight keychain on it, getting a better look at it. Eventually I get up and walk away, not knowing what to think.
I'm not sure how to rationalize this one. The bird was awake unless it was totally deaf and birds move their heads and have their eyes open when they're asleep. (My mom's birds all sleep with their eyes closed and their necks kinda tucked into their bodies. This one just looked like it was standing like normal.) Pigeons aren't very afraid of humans, I know. But whenever I see them in parking lots they usually fly away when somebody gets close.
When he died I had stuff I wanted to apologize to him for. Part of me wants to think that it was his way of saying it was okay.
