It's not a terrible cap right now, but the question is whether or not they will increase it in a few years as HD content becomes even more prevalent.

I hope this question becomes a moot point after everyone jumps off of comcast cable and to a better content provider by the time that happens.

even if the cap is far off, it's the concept of a cap at all that's wrong. -> new isp.

Fucking weak. Right after I sign up. What's more, these dipshits were running my 16mb/sec connection at 25mb/sec the week I signed up and are now giving me less than 4. FE$WF@#F

I wouldn't care if this was the norm with all ISPs, but it's really not. It's just Comcast being dicks about it. To me, it's just one more reason why I should transfer schools and GTFO of this 1k population town.

    Also, I don't know exactly how much me and my roomies download a month, but it's getting to be pretty ridiculous amounts. >.>;

I download about 15ish episodes of new anime a week, plus other complete series I might watch, in addition to tons of new manga chapters - and I still probably couldn't do 250gb in a month unless I tried.

It still sets a bad precedence though.

you know.. as much as I hate comcast, I do like their commercials. not the turtle ones, but the odd seemingly random clip followed by a sentence that explains it.

It's reasonable for me, and a lot more than what ATT and others have. I wont hit that cap or even use half of it. I might play FFXI at the most. . . 3-5hrs a day. I'd be in deep water if there were implemented years ago though when I was a heavy music downloader.

Actually, it is a norm with most ISPs, just most of them don't bother to tell you what the cap is before they "talk with you" about your excessive usage. I really don't see what the problem is with paying for a service relative to your usage of that service.

Also, in the rest of the world, internet service is usually metered this way, and is definitely metered this way when you talk about professional web hosting. So it's not really setting a precedent at all, just bringing the USA consumer system more in line with the rest of the world.

I do agree with you that Comcast are a bunch of dicks though.

    lolComcrap.

Good thing Optimum has already confirmed with the customers they provide service to that they will not be doing this, ever.

    Anime torrenting on charter:
    Code:
month rx | tx | total
    	------------------------+---------------+---------------
    	  Jun '08 33871 MB | 40676 MB | 74548 MB
    	  Jul '08 33099 MB | 61362 MB | 94462 MB
    	  Aug '08 33368 MB | 36825 MB | 70193 MB
I forecast that my September total will be a little light; not much I want to download at the moment, and I've stopped seeding what I have downloaded (due to achieving a ratio of 2-3 on some multi-gig batch torrents and 4-6 on the individual downloads).

    Here's my August daily stats.

You can pretty easily tell which days I wasn't actively torrenting. August 7-10 was when my roommate was home using the network. So for a guy who hits up YouTube and a few other video sites and sends emails, I think those days represent his peak usage (note the extremely low upload total). The 160-250mb dl/20mb ul days are days when neither of us really did much more than look at webpages that weren't youtube.

Id have to say this is rather reasonable. This is coming from someone, along with my roomate, that will probably be testing that limit. 250G really is very reasonable, especially when i thought they were going to push for half that. If you are using more then that in a month, I'm sure you would have no problem paying the extra for the heavy bandwidth usage. I know we wont. We get run for the money we spend out of comcast, and after splitting the bill between 2 other roomates, its worth the money.

Also please remember that its ~125gb/month if you seed to a ratio of 1.00 on torrents. The cap is for total bandwidth not just for d/l. So if you're a good little torrent type person and seed well beyond for a good ratio you're gonna quickly eat into that amount :D.

That being said, I won't come near to hitting the cap most months, but there will be several where I will go over easily.

Frontier Communications Co., a phone company, plans to start charging extra for use of more than 5 gigabytes per month.
This makes me sad These people are the phone company around here and will be the only opportunity for me to get high speed internet since nothing else is available. Hell, even they haven't gotten to us yet but they are supposed to within the next 2 weeks.

This is where someone, namely me, points out how the U.S. is in the dark ages when it comes to internet access. Pathetic.

250gb total is a shitload for non-torrenting users, just don't keep those damn torrents running 24/7 and watch your usage levels.

My ISP only offers a measly 20gb down per month and aside from the months I purchase/download games off Steam, I never go over.
