And I prefer candidates who don't exploit such bullshit so blatantly. I don't want a candidate of equal intelligence to me; I want one smarter. I want an elite president. Fuck the strategies that make people not choose based on that, even though they work.

So you think elite theory is true and perfectly ok? Obama's campaign has attempted to use frames this time around as well, but they don't realize "change" and "hope" are neutral frames, which is why you see mcCain using the same word. Words like Maverick, on the other hand, are just re-enforced when Obama says things like "no maverick" because the same neurons in our brains still fire.

Obama and the democrats attempt to do the same thing, they are just disorganized and suck at it. Don't try and pin this on one party lol

Unless we intend to raise most people to such a level of intellect that they are immune to this, then they will always be under the paws of demagogues. We either accept that, switch to a meritocracy and become super elitists, or we get rid of democracy because there's no point in having a democratic nation that has its people controlled by demagogues who are only in political positions for their own self interests.

I generally believe that a pure democracy can work, as in general, when the masses make decisions they neither act too harshly or too leniently, yes they are mediocre, but it's better than having an "oligarchy" under the disguise of democracy.

It's our fault too, but change still takes place. It's just small. People give politicians way too much credit. All the great political movements in American history have been slow and arduous and only succeeded through the efforts of many; many who go unnamed/etc.

Part of the reason they fail at it is they do choose candidates who appeal to people who tend to value things like academics. Hell, that was Kerry's biggest hangup: he focused on the details, not the distillation. People want distilled truth, not detailed truth.

the thing is, nobody is immune to it no matter how smart you are. Either way, your neurons will path toward each other after a while. This doesn't make us vote a certain way, just makes us react to things in certain ways. I think the "disguise of democracy" you are talking about has some parallels to some people's belief that we do not act under our own free will because of the way our brains work. Our neurons make us think some ways which can make us do certain things. If that is will, then we also have democracy.

Look, people have lots of shit going on in their lives. It would be ideal if we could all keep up-to-date on the wealth of literature out there that covers world events and form a more nuanced/sophisticated opinion on things. However, that doesn't happen. How many people total vote in this country? Do the youth vote? Etc etc

I think we'll end up getting only marginally different candidates. It's Coke and Pepsi. The way to change things is through 'the movement' - whatever it may be.
