How would she make money if Obama wins?

Her book is set to be released right around the time the new president takes office, you can't honestly believe that a book entitled "Breakthrough: Politics and Race in the Age of Obama" wouldn't be selling a hell of a lot better if Obama was set to taking the top job.

As said above, yeah it really doesn't matter because the VP debates mean about zilch in the long run (looking at you Dan Quayle), but it's still quite ridiculous that she's being allowed to run a debate,

Fake outrage? That moderator should be replaced ASAP. Having a financial stake in the outcome of the election should disqualify her from being an "impartial" moderator. McCain wins, her book tanks; Obama wins, she benefits. If it were a woman with the "McCain is the Messiah" book due to hit shelves Jan. 18, 2009, there'd be a firestorm for days. Weeks even.

Hell, there are some libs still counting hanging chads in Florida from '00.

I think it's a problem, but it's one that could (and should) have been solved long ago.

The Commission on Presidential Debates picks them. The whole purpose for their existence is to get as many people in America as possible to watch the debates. So far they're doing a pretty good job. All this crying over who the moderators are is just a new tack on the oldest debate tactic in the world: make it seem like the deck is stacked against you going into the debates. Lowered expectations for you => raised expectations of your opponent.

I think this is just mock outrage, Ifill has had this book in the works for longer than she was the moderator for this debate. Similiarly the book is more about the wave of politicians that Obama is just a part of, not exclusively about him. It is believeable that the McCain campaign didnt know about this shit since they clearly did a great job vetting Palin, but I think its more likely that they want to feign bias to lower expectations for Palin even more. They want the MSM talking heads to be talking about how she did as well as she could have given biased moderation and someone as skilled as Biden instead of how she is an ignorant bimbo who can see Russia from an island in Alaska shes never been to. Democrats could be equally as outraged that Tom Brokaw is moderating the next debate when he fradulently used month old polling data on Meet the Press this weekend to make it seem like McCain was still in the lead but they aren't because Tom Brokaw has a history of more or less fair moderation as does Ifill.

I'm holding her to...well, the me standard. I can only name about 2 supreme court cases off the top of my head (roe v. wade and brown v. board of education) - and I'm like, well if I can't think of one offhand I disagree with, why should she be able to...

and even if you can't remember the specific names of the decisions, if you pay any kind of attention to the news you should be able to know where they've stood on things like gun control (they overturned the D.C. ban), partial birth abortion (they've upheld the ban against it), etc. etc.

The Couric interview may be characterized as a hit piece on Palin but she's not helping the manner by completely exposing her cluelessness on matters domestic and international.

There's no black people in Alaska so she has no reason to know about Brown vs Board of Ed. But, considering her previous answers to matters of US History (not knowing about how the pledge of allegiance came about) its not much of a surprise she doesn't know more historic cases. The fact that she doesnt know about Bush v Gore or any of the Guantanamo rulings is even more pathetic though.. I guess "Um, All of Them" didnt have an article about those cases.

Nah, it's more like stirring controversy. This campaign has done very well in producing distractions to get people talking about topics unrelated to the moment. Ignore the debate itself for a moment and look at this moderator book "controversy" instead. Pay no attention to how bad our candidate is looking right now.

I think even the McCain campaign knows how screwed she will be tomorrow night and this laying the groundwork for assigning blame. Or maybe not even going that far, but just provide fuel for the pundits and the echo chamber to come up with their own conclusions.

I dunno, I'm feeling pretty cynical since the McCain camp should have known about the book well in advance of agreeing to the moderator. At the very least, if it was that bad, they should have made an objection to the Commission and requested a new moderator. They simply didn't care or didn't check. Either way they have no real reason to complain now, but that won't stop them from coming up with distractions or shady stuff (like the bailout ads that were condemning both sides of the debate before the house bill's vote).
