I personally think that her daughter's pregnancy is a family matter and her family should be left alone, however, I -seriously- wish this would actually start a real discussion on the abysmal success rate of abstinence only sex education programs with the GOP, but that just isn't likely to happen.

A) We aren't talking about it as a character issue; we're talking about it as a policy conflict (and LOLage)
B) We don't know if it was a choice, and his parents were married after 3 months of pregnancy and were were engaged before the pregnancy, it seems, so idk.

Abstinence only sex education implies exactly that, abstinence only. Its ludicrous and a waste of federal money to believe that you can simply tell teenagers not to have sex. They're going to have sex. Not educating them on contraceptives, especially those which help prevent the transmission of sexually transmitted diseases is just asking for disaster.

Obama is now quoted as telling reporters to back off, keeping a earlier promise by McCain and request by Obama that Obama's daughters (and his family unit as a whole) be left out of political fighting. So I personally respect Obama for that decision, and I hope that the press and Obama's campaign as a whole leaves it alone as well.

If anyone attacks it, it would be Biden and it will be subtly in the guise of policy. I doubt he will, but it is possible.

Abstinence only, as supported by the GOP, does not include a mix, so no birth control or even condoms, just abstinence. They think it's contradictory to tell them not to have sex (because that's the only thing they want to do) and at the same time give them the means to do it safely. They do seem to like ignoring that abstinence only unanimously fails in comparing to mixed sexual education.

It's like the difference between pro-life and pro-choice. Pro-life says no abortion, period. Pro-choice can include many different viewpoints, including "rare as fuck, but lets not make it a back alley coathanger deal."

but really, WHAT is the problem with teaching contraceptives? its a health issue, not just a moral one. as xavier said, teens are GOING to have sex, and its risky not to teach them how to protect themselves from STDs, much less ruining their lives by having a child too early.
