VP is a thankless job in office, but still an important one. You have to take it seriously because of next-in-power, plus VPs are often looked at as the future of the party when they're young.

Brilliant move on the short term. Her Views/History/Corruption doesn't mean a whole lot. What does mean a whole lot is that Obama had a brilliant speech last night, and today, noone is going to talk about it. McCain just put himself on the media forefront with Obama. I don't know if it would last, but McCain has put himself on the stage, we'll see how long he's able to stay up there.

At the same time because of the timing of the announcement and the situation it will hurt McCain in the long run because once the initial reaction wears off it will seem contrived and lame given his reasoning behind the decision are so transparent and not because he genuinely thinks she is a good choice.

Well, the glimmer of a black nominee has lasted a long long time. The mascarade of appointing a female VP just has to last couple of months. Not a lot of time left here. Obama needs to move to attack mode really fast.

But he can't imply in any way that McCain chose her because she is a women, or at least, not make it obvious.

    Yeah, I'd hit it.

As far as relevant contribution to the topics at hand goes: This is either genius or madness, I'm not sure which. The pick is entirely superficial, but there are a helluva lot of superficial voters in America, so that may or may not pay off. He's obviously going for several birds with one stone: Nullify the age issue by picking a younger VP, appease party-line yokels with her more conservative bent (don't quote me on that one, I'm only repeating whe I've heard), and lure women voters/Hillary supporters with the promise of the first female VP in American history. Is that enough to overcome her failings? I'unno, I ain't that smart.

Does it need to be implied though? I mean, isn't it obvious that's the only reason why he chose her?

I can't imagine McCain choosing her if she was a dude.

Well no matter what happens at this point this is a historic election in this country as both major parties have a first on their ballot.

Edit: That was the point I was making Octopus the motivation for choosing her is so transparent considering the fact that she has no experience.

a lot of women will vote for McCain just to put a woman in power regardless of political affiliation.

Mccain is surrounded with well paid political strategists. He'll find a way to justify the pick other than "hay, it's a hot chick".

Ty - You know in a Presidential campaign all the skeletons come out of the closet. The corruption scandal will come back to bite him in the ass. He should have gone with the safe pick and chosen Romney. This is the equivalent of Obama choosing Gov. Blagoyavich of IL.

Nah.. he doesn't even have to acknowledge the pick - Obama is running against McCain and he's perfectly capable of thoroughly picking him apart. I'll be surprised if she gets play anywhere outside of Fox News between now and the VP debate.

Edit : I forgot to account for the traditional media's distortion of reality. They'll probably keep her simmering in the background along with this bullshit PUMA theme.

It is when McCain is 72 years old and has cancer twice.

There's a reason why networks keep saying she's a "heartbeat away from the presidency".

Here's a good comparison of the veep picks someone on another forum wrote:

Both candidates have made their first and thus far only presidential decision - selection of a vice president who would run the country in their absence.

Obama picks the chairman of the senate foreign relations committee with strong ties to allied governments, the military, eastern europe, Israel and the wider middle east

McCain picks the governor of Alaska with strong ties to the Christian coalition, the town of Wasilia, the Alaskan oil industry, the PTA, and the Wasilia local youth hockey team

Obama picks a guy who will be a powerful ally in crafting foreign and domestic policy.

McCain picks a woman who will be a powerful ally in winning over some voting constituencies.

    So... how did they do?

So it's more of a If-you-can't-beat-em-join-em pick then? If that's true then McCain's team did a pretty crappy job of finding someone comparable.
