In North Carolina, over 200,000 residents have already cast ballots in early voting. In Fayetteville, a group of John McCain supporters heckled and harassed a group of mostly black supporters of Barack Obama as they voted on Sunday. The Washington Times reported the McCain backers shouted and mocked the voters as they walked into the voting place. The website Facing South reports the McCain supporters likely broke the Voting Rights Act of 1964, which prohibits anyone from intimidating or threatening a person for voting or attempting to vote. On that same day in Fayetteville, North Carolina, thirty people reported having their tires slashed after attending an Obama rally.
In Caledonia, Wisconsin, a fifty-eight-year-old Obama campaign volunteer was assaulted on Saturday while canvasing. Nancy Takehara was attacked by a disgruntled homeowner who accused her of being connected to the community organizing group ACORN. Takehara said, “He grabbed me by the back of the neck. I thought he was going to rip my hair out of my head. He was pounding on my head and screaming.” Takehara said she was not seriously injured.

mccain is waging one of the most divisive campaigns since the 70s in spite of his "reach across the aisle" rhetoric.

Changenism? And how more spending and avoiding deficit fear is a good thing? I've watched it and read a few blogs and no one seems to be able to explain it in a way that I can figure out. This seems to be the only site that has the whole before what he said and after what he said, everything else is just making fun of his "changenism" sentence.
I heard the nobel prize winning economist for this year talking about this on the radio today. He said when you're in an economic crisis, it's important to spend in order to keep the economy growing. If you stop or slow spending you make things worse. Reducing the deficit is something you focus on when things are going well.

Well, I mean, I'm just trying to bring this down to "my level". I mean say my credit cards are maxed and I have little money in my checking account and my payments exceed my income, to me it doesn't make sense to be spending more money. I guess that our trillion dollars debt is OK to just keep spending then?

Again, not slamming or turning this into anything other than I'm trying to understand better.

it's more like even though you might be in debt, you have to spend money (that you may not really have) to pay your bills otherwise your situation gets shittier- eviction, less food on the table, lose your car so you can't get to work, etc. when you're in better shape again in regards to income, you should make an effort to buckle down a bit and pay down some of your debt.

a lot of people are speaking out now because it's become obvious what kind of problems we run into when we spend uncontrollably in the good times. call it overconsumption, if you will.

The word that was unintelligible was "Keynesism", for Keynesian economics, named after John Maynard Keynes. In short, the idea is to deficit spend when there's an economic downturn to get money circulating (through a number of ways) and create more jobs through government initiatives. When times are better, do the opposite, cut spending, restrict the money supply, and pay down debt.

Edit: The problem, in practice, is that the government has a habit of spending the piles of money they find themselves sitting on, instead of paying down their debts.

isn't president of the senate effectively controlling the senate since they are charged with ensuring procedural rules are followed and cast the deciding vote in a tie?

    No.

The VP's role as President of the Senate is to cast a tie-breaking vote. If they wish, they may sit as the presiding officer during Senate sessions, but most times they will appoint a President Pro Tempore and go off with the President to do stuff.

they don't really ensure procedural rules are followed; they simply vote on ties. most VPs don't spend much time in the Senate at all. There are Senate majority and minority leaders, and a procedures committee iirc.

This is just an off-shoot of how Dick Cheney tried to VP, nothing more, nothing less, just as evil.

I've heard that Dick Cheney had acquired powers which allow him to teleport at will using dark magic which he obtained by sacrificing baby angels.

I've been trying to find a link to the vid, but I saw a video on tv with kids exploited by their parents bashing palin, was pretty weird. started off well with some nearly adult girls advising her not to fuck up what the forerunners of womens lib strove for so she could get where she is now, but then they start spewing lies and bashing the shit out of her about stuff like she believes God supports the massacre of troops in Iraq(fucking dumb to start with plus her son is in Iraq) then they start talking about rape and have this girl say "if I was raped I want to have an abortion" and start talking about alaska has the highest rate of rape (because palin has anything to do with that and it's not like she has cracked down on sex offenders). The parents should have been the ones spewing that garbage not these kids.

Well, once it was discovered that Palin signed a budget that enforced charging rape victims for their own medical examinations, in the state where rape is the largest criminal issue...

...the floodgates kinda open a bit for overheated rhetoric.

Right some of it had seeds of truth, but I don't think kids should be exploited for this, I would wager the Obama campaign wouldn't want that either.
