Barack Obama's tax plan is the opposite of supply-side economics. He proposes to raise marginal rates for just about every federal tax. He also proposes a raft of tax credits that taxpayers can receive if they engage in various government-specified activities.

Moreover, the tax credits would mostly go to those who pay little or nothing in federal income taxes. His trick is to make the tax credits "refundable." Thus, if the tax credit is for $1,000, but the taxpayer would otherwise only pay $200 in taxes, the government would write a check to the taxpayer for $800. If the taxpayer pays nothing in federal income taxes, the government would pay him the whole $1,000.

I have a friend who is poll-watching in Florida (Jacksonville area) this year and he's saying they switched to optical scan machines made by ESS. Only real problem with them is that the card stock swells in the humidity and causes the machine to misfeed a LOT.

By the way Swampy I was reading that rape kit argument you had on the last page and I just gotta say man that it made me so sick that I lost so much respect for your positions. Seriously.. I'm amazed you didn't demand a fucking DNA test to prove it was rape. And I don't give a shit if you oppose the rape kits because it's a budget "pork" expenditure or if you oppose them because you're against Plan B contraception 'cause it's "killing babies" - do you really have that much blind allegiance to the party line that you have to defend withholding a few hundred dollars' worth of necessary immediate medical attention from a goddamn rape victim?! Preventing a pregnancy from taking place using the Plan B medication (which isn't designed to abort, it's designed to release the egg so that it cannot be conceived) isn't the same thing as waiting for about 6-7 weeks to find out you're pregnant and killing the baby.

There is no record the town every charged anyone. Here's what the governor she defeated said though, "In the past we've charged the cost of exams to the victim's insurance company when possible. I just don't want to see any more burden put on the taxpayer."

Do you have any evidence that this was not excised from the city budget, or that she didn't sign said budget?

Edit: Digging further, it does get pretty obscure. While the budget for the line-item that included rape kits was dramatically reduced for the year in question, it didn't explicitly state that year that it went to rape kits or medical examinations for criminal investigations. This is an anti-Palin-slanting article, but seems to give a pretty clear timeline if anyone is interested in what exactly happened regarding the rape kit budget in 2000, and it does not present itself nearly as badly as it has been insinuated.
