I agree that it'd be better if they did this.

OMG, they turned off the Address Verification System?!?! Wait, there is no required "Address Verification System", that's just an optional service that credit card companies provide. Not required, even for online purchases. Maybe it should be, but OMG, can't have the government telling credit card companies what to do, that'd be socialism.

perhaps someone can correct me, but I'm pretty sure that a campaign doesn't have to itemize the names and addresses of donations under 200$, which is what is getting the RNC's panties in a bunch.

You can't expect the campaigns to properly screen every 5$ donation that comes through, when this election has totaled hundreds of millions of dollars combined for both parties raised. It's clever of the RNC to notice that they have extra screening procedures in place to limit fake 5$ donations (majority of Obama funding), but you also have to point out that they're not properly handling their large donations (over the legal limit) which make up a more sizable portion of McCain's funding. Also has anyone tried making the same donation to the McCain campaign? I really don't see any differences in the contribution websites.

edit: ah ok the address verification system, disregard then.

I'm not saying there's anything wrong with doing it, but why do it? According to the vast right-wing conspiracy this wouldn't be possible if it was turned on. So why do something that only creates more work for yourself?

McCain's donation site does verify addresses.

yeah, donor/credit card name matching doesn't seem to unreasonable.

So as I understand it, I could be in another country and donate? As long as the # is correct?

You're saying if you lie and say you're in a US State, with a valid credit card that is from, and has a billing address from, another country?

    Not sure.

So far, we've proven that if you have a valid US credit card, you can fill whatever you'd like in the contact information, click "Yeah, I promise all this stuff is accurate" and it'll go through. Whether it's more work or not to do it that way seems like something for the Obama campaign to worry about, not us.

While I'm quite familiar with the habit of nitpicking anything and everything to do with the opposing side, where's the proof that someone *without* a valid US credit card can submit a donation? Where's the multitudes of people to claim they have have fraudulant charges on their cards to Barack Obama for Pesident? Until some of that shows up, this is nothing more than ill-intentioned speculation.

If by "in another country" you mean "having a foreign credit card", then that'd be what I'd like to see checked, not this "I'm a legal donor, but I lied about my address, so Obama's getting illegal contributions!".

I think you fail to see the implications of this. George Soros could given Obama half of his $650 million haul if this is how his website works, meaning getting by the $2,300 limit.

Edit: I have to admit, the prospect of McCain getting owned by his "crowing achievement" is somewhat humorous.

$200 at a time, each on different credit card numbers would mean that George would need... 1.6 million credit card numbers. Impressive.

Edit: Forgot to mention that if we're allowing the prospect of an infinite number of unique credit cards, you could do the same for McCain.

Why can't you use the same one over and over? Don't have to report donations under $200.

I think the whole campaign financing deal is hilarious. Republican's act as if they wouldn't have done the same if they can even haul in half of what Obama has raised. At this point it sounds more like children crying because other kids got better toys to play with.

So as I understand it, desperate McCain voters are submitting false information into Obama's admittedly and demonstrably faulty online donation system in an attempt to throw doubt into the fact that, on average, about 1.75 million people gave about $86 to Obama's campaign in the month of September.

Hmm.. if you were trying to simply show how not to set up a credit card transaction system, you'd have a point. Unfortunately that's not your motive here, in which case I ask you to either refer the people doing this to the police for credit card fraud...

...or I simply say to you I am a special interest and I donated to Barack Obama. Who is Senator McCain's special interest?

Why can't you do the same thing for McCain? Sounds more like a loophole in the reporting laws than a problem with either website, given that we don't know how either candidate handles repeated donations over the legal limit from the same card.

Most people don't know it's that flawed. It shouldn't be flawed.

Talking about the flaws are OK.

Of course Swampy's websites are blowing this out of proportion, expounding on the worst possible situation. That doesn't mean the flaw shouldn't be mentioned.
