"So if somebody wants to build a coal-powered plant, they can; it's just that it will bankrupt them because they're going to be charged a huge sum for all that greenhouse gas that's being emitted."
"So if somebody wants to build a coal-powered plant, they can.
It's just that it will bankrupt them."
It being his plan.
DURRRRRR
Coal plants aside, got sent this today: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=UxlwYP0HNdc&NR=1
Forgive me if it's a repost -- searched and didn't find the link and I can't remember all the links that have been posted here, so hopefully not old news. Funny either way.
Proceed with the Swampy v Everyone Else debate.
I have a future camera here's me tomorrow night (with a moustache):

"The McCain amendment will put coal out of business by forcing fuel switching to natural gas..... This is an unacceptable outcome for my State and our Nation. Nearly 90 percent of Ohio's electricity comes from coal. For the Nation, it is about 50 percent. Companies depend on this low-cost energy to compete in the global marketplace. We do not live in a cocoon. Companies are moving overseas because of increased health care costs, litigation costs, and energy costs are also a major factor." Senator George Voinovich (R-OH)
"Does it involve some sacrifice on the part of the American people? Yes." - John McCain
"I'm sure this amendment will be attacked for all the thousands of jobs that will be lost" - John McCain
Swamp either their positions are the fucking same thing here and this becomes moot republican hypocrisy or since the newspaper that allegedly has this shit isn't proving Obama said that it remains bullshit hypocrisy since fucking McCain is on CSPAN saying he wants to kill the coal industry.
The whole quote:
"Let me sort of describe my overall policy.
What I’ve said is that we would put a cap and trade system in place that is as aggressive, if not more aggressive, than anybody else’s out there.
I was the first to call for a 100% auction on the cap and trade system, which means that every unit of carbon or greenhouse gases emitted would be charged to the polluter. That will create a market in which whatever technologies are out there that are being presented, whatever power plants that are being built, that they would have to meet the rigors of that market and the ratcheted down caps that are being placed, imposed every year.
So if somebody wants to build a coal-powered plant, they can; it’s just that it will bankrupt them because they’re going to be charged a huge sum for all that greenhouse gas that’s being emitted.
That will also generate billions of dollars that we can invest in solar, wind, biodiesel and other alternative energy approaches.
The only thing I’ve said with respect to coal, I haven’t been some coal booster. What I have said is that for us to take coal off the table as a ideological matter as opposed to saying if technology allows us to use coal in a clean way, we should pursue it.
So if somebody wants to build a coal-powered plant, they can. It’s just that it will bankrupt them."
I don't see where Obama said, "I will bankrupt the Coal Industry" He talks about cap and trade system.
Alright, I wasn't able to watch the video if that's where that's from. There's still a clear difference b/w the statements, one is just worse than the other. So now liberals have at least one reason to be happy if McCain wins, when cap and trade ruins the economy they can blame a Republican for it.
Here is the rest of that quote (I shouldn't have said full):
So if somebody wants to build a coal-powered plant, they can; it's just that it will bankrupt them because they're going to be charged a huge sum for all that greenhouse gas that's being emitted.
I believe the "it" in this sentence does refer to his plan, but it seems like Obama meant that if the coal industry continues to build plants with the same technology now, they will go bankrupt because of the stricter polluting fines from his own plan.
The way Swampy quoted it seemed like Obama meant building a plant will bankrupt them (that's what I thought at first too, and was very confused).
Obama's plan was to change the way the cap and trade system works. Since it would be steeper, coal plants that don't invest in cleaner coal or reduced emissions would end up going bankrupt.
Industries and coal plants are given credits for the amount of pollutants emitted, and they are able to trade/buy credits between other industries in order to not go over cap (Plant A has 500 credits but are expected to breach 600 at the end of the month, so they buy 100 more credits to avoid harsh fines). Other lower polluting industries can participate and benefit from this trade market. This money can go towards donations for tax deductions or into funding for cleaner coal.
So yea, what I got from that interview was - If the coal industry continues discharging the same amount of gasses they are now while under Obama's plan, they will go bankrupt because every unit of carbon emitted would be charged to the polluter.
Is there some other conspiracy how Obama would bankrupt the coal industry with his bare hands that I missed?
The amount of people I know that voted for McCain because their church told them to is astounding
Isn't Cap and Trade a form of free market capitalism? Now swampy is saying that it will ruin the economy?
Just saw a clip of McCain talking about this during one of his speeches. He said A video had surfaced recently of Obama talking to "a guess who? A San Francisco newspaper..." he then paused while the crowd started to boo at the mention of ANOTHER AMERICAN CITY. I am so fucking sick of this divisive bullshit.
I wish somebody besides Bill Maher would stand up and say
"If the liberal elitist cities of New York and Washington were American enough for Al Qaeda on 9/11 it should be American enough for you assholes"
