I never understood the celebrity bad press? How is that bad? Its great they are drawing these numbers.

As fas as her pulling the numbers because she's new, let's be honest, if palin was john whiteguy from montana, he isn't getting half the share palin got. Woman + media lambasting + celebrity family issues = interesting = ratings

@Quixon: I've talked to a few people (men and women) in their 50's and 60's who have come out directly and said they won't vote for a n*gger for president. I think it's disgusting and sad that they think like that, but it is definitely real and will definitely effect the outcome of this election.

@Tyche: I've never understood the celebrity thing either. I didn't understand the "elitist" tag either, I want my president to be better in all aspects than the average man.

I don't understand the experience angle, It's not like the president is King Solomon cutting cattle in half, solving every little dispute that comes to his desk. That's what the cabinet and advisers, and unfortunately lobbyist, are for. I'll take sound judgment over experience anyday.

I wish the political process was watered down to: here's the issues, here's where the candidates stand on the issues and here's the line where I write Jesse Ventura's name on the ballot.

Guess what? The people of Iran won't stand for it because, believe it or not, they don't want fucking nuclear weapons. Neither does the religious oligarcy - they want to go forward with nuclear power. The only person in the government crazy enough to actively pursue such weapons was Ahmedinijad, and he's been impeached.

You know what would eventually convince Iran's people and religious leaders to build nukes? Our war-mongering idiot of a president and his party, who continually threaten them with a good bombing into the 17th Century.

Yeah man I think is insane this day in age.

I'm not saying my mom is racist or anything, but what the hell am I supposed to think when you say a Senator and Democratic Nominee for President is "Anti-American".

And FWIW... I'd probably put in Governor Palin's Ass... she looks 1/2 decent on the coach with the Bear skin.

Ron Paul's movement, or whatever you want to call it, within the Republican Party and Independent/Libertarian base has been pretty significant. There's a lot of fringe elements that want legal weed, or what have you, but their desire for that comes from a greater desire that Paul presents in his platform. (Even if they may disagree with other elements)

One of his key philosophies is not caring whether you agree with him or not, he has his plans and ideas and he sticks to them. I quoted a song a few pages back, but, "There ain't no good guys, there ain't no bad guys, there's just you and me and we just disagree" and I think that accurately reflects RP's campaign. He got a lot of bad press for his ideas, but you can't really explain your view of why modern economics is failed in a soundbite, you can't explain the history of US foreign policy and draw back to the founding fathers in a soundbite. His gold standard ideas were taken way out of context, as well as his no income tax policy. The general media consensus was that on day one he would do all of those things...well I think we can all safely say that's unrealistic and unfair...there are larger documents and media pointing out how he would intend to do those things, if he could, and they all spanned over 1 term.

I don't think he was the right candidate because he just wouldn't be elected, not in this day and age, even if his ideas were kind of the standard. He is a great public speaker but also...not so great. He goes in too many directions when presenting an idea and the media needs soundbites...the only time they ever showed him was when he had a good quip back to a Rep. candidate about his policies, ie the Guiliani 9/11 reading list.

However, I think other candidates should rise from what he started because he was the right man to begin the 'movement' or what have you. He is a pretty genuine person, and even if he doesn't smoke weed, approve of gays, etc, he would fight for their rights to be free. One man that impressed me that I'll have to look up more about was Bruce Fein...but there are other people in politics who came out of this revolution that may surface next time around.

I'm not so sure how accurate everything that person wrote is, because I read this line:

"As an oil producer, the high price of oil has created a budget surplus
in Alaska. Rather than invest this surplus in technology that will
make us energy independent and increase efficiency, as Governor she
proposed distribution of this surplus to every individual in the state."

The writer makes many points about the immense amount of spending and taxing Palin did, but ALSO attacks her for giving money back to the taxpayers. So I'm not sure how biased and how much dislike this writer may have for Palin and how she may be twisting the words and facts in the rest of the letter.

@quixon - About the race thing. While I fully agree it's sad that there will be people voting against Obama based on race, I imagine just as many if not more people will be voting FOR him based on race. Both are poor reasons to vote for a candidate.

In the letter she is attacking Palin for not knowing how to manage money at all on a large scale. First Palin goes and takes a State with no debt and a budget surplus and creates large amounts of debt and when the State finally has a surplus again rather than looking ahead long term and using that extra money to get rid of the debt she created she in a very short sighted manner gives the money to the people. It was a poor choice to give the money to the people it would have been much better used as the letter states to fund alternative energy sources or reduce debt or various other things.

mm, some hypocrisy in the morning.

and because i'm such a sweety, the other side's retort:

And also, don't forget that the evil Democratic people put Sarah Palin's SSN on the internet...

and also, i realize all of these are from slanted websites, but i wanted to put it out there anyway.
So conception date is the end-all/be-all of legitimacy of a child? I think the pro-choice crowd may have something to say about that.

I'm also not seeing where the hypocrisy you mention takes part... a 24 year old woman and her boyfriend get pregnant, and they marry in order to provide, what they believe to be, the best environment to raise the 1st of their five children. I'm not sure where that goes against anything she has said.

While I don't particularly approve of Congress as a whole right now, it's naive and stupid to compare approval ratings like that. A 51% majority and a sitting president of the opposite party is about the worst situation possible for a Congress, in terms of productivity. Democrats know that George will veto anything that gives them too much of what they want, and Republicans know that they won't have the numbers to push through what they want, even if George is willing to sign it.

In the mean time, George gets to blame Congress for everything, since he doesn't have the power to introduce legislation, even though he uses the threat of vetoing to ensure that everything that does get passed fulfills his goals.

If you actually look at the reasons, rather than just trying to make a snappy comeback defense, it makes sense.

Comparing the approval rating of a single person to the approval rating of a body of people is a misleading statistic.

Generally speaking, if you were to look at individual approval ratings of Congressmen, I believe they are somewhat to significantly higher than the approval rating of Congress overall. People have a tendency to rate their own representative high but to blame others for the bodies shortcomings.

Point being, you're comparing the approval rating of an individual who sets his own policy to that of a body of legislators whose efforts to enact policy can be stopped by a single person filibustering. Thus, congressional bodies have the disadvantage of appearing to do nothing despite what may be good intentions.
