broseph, compared to any other recent republican, he's pretty good

You got Nixon, Ford, Reagan, Bush Sr., and Bush Jr., every single one of them laughable

Before him, you have the worst president in US History(Hoover) then a couple of do-nothings, then finally Teddy who is great. Before the turn of the century, the Republicans and especially the Democrats weren't anything like the parties of today, but I count Lincoln as a Republican anyway.

You mean Teddy, who was a fan of US Imperialism?

I give it to him, the American people back then said "No, the US doesn't do this" and he listened and reverted back to our old policies.

You mean Eisenhower, who tied the hands of many US commanders in favor of his own ideas, which were terrible, or the ideas of british commanders, which were terrible.

I don't get the Bay of Pigs argument. That was another situation where the US was enforcing it's policies abroad, decided not to support them wholeheartedly, and as a result many died.

They spend a majority of their time and money just trying to get on the ballot. Right now, Bob Barr is polling at around 6% nationally, but even if he gets just 2% of the vote then it means that the Libertarian Party could save several months and over $250,000 in petitioning costs.
I think we just agreed on something - I voted for the Green Party's David Cobb in 2004, and had Hillary won the nomination I'd be voting for Cynthia McKinney.

Also, if he (or any other candidate) gets more than 5% than the party is automatically invited to the next election's debates. That is just as important as saving money and time on petitions, if not even more important because it would provide more insight into the issues that face the country.

BTW Ike was a good president, but let's face it he had it on cruise control being one of the all-stars of World War II. And McCarthy's bullshit happened on Ike's watch too. If you really want to go back to a truly great Republican president you have to look at Theodore Roosevelt.

Listen, every single US President has done something bad while in office. Every last one. You literally cannot name a president who didn't fuck something up. Teddy did a lot of things right, and he got things wrong. The same could be said of FDR, and as I am sure you could guess, I am a fan of FDR.

Not exactly true. The organization that runs the Presidential debates can and will change their policies to support their backers, the Republicans and Democrats. Since 1992 they made a promise to themselves that they will never let a third party candidate into the debates again, and they have kept that promise pretty well. Currently, to get into the debates, a candidate needs to poll above 15% across five national polls.

And if they change their political party, they lose their seats in congress.

Was cleaning up from a garage sale so late but... yeah. While the Lewinsky scandal threw a giant black mark over his entire presidency, Clinton was around for very good times in the US economy. The .com boom (and subsequent crash) was a big part of this, but it's still something that anyone with a brain can't really dispute.

And I think trying to view Bush's presidency as an archetypal Republican presidency is also a big mistake (While people aren't directly stating it per say, alot of people are obviously thinking it). Bush is a fuck up, pure and simple. The democratic party should be ashamed of themselves for losing the 2004 election, even if Bush was still riding on the waves of being a "wartime" President.

    yes

I still don't know how that happened

edit: well I know how it happened (swift boating was REALLY effective for some reason) but I guess I just don't know why it was so effective

They also picked one of the worst Presidential candidates in recent memory. Well, maybe not quite as bad as McCain, but very, very close.

As bad as McCain is, he's probably the only one that has a chance at winning this year.

If obama holds on to his leaning states, he's Florida away from winning.

Oh, from the republican side? No, I don't think republicans had a snow ball's chance in hell this time around. Bush fucked up too badly. But Obama will win, McCain doesn't have a chance... Unless some serious red-baiting happens, it's really far into Obama's court.

I think debates are going to put people in Mccain's favor. While he's (Mccain) far from entertaining/interesting, Obama seems almost helpless at times without a teleprompter in front of him.

I'm not sure if I wasn't clear, but I meant Kerry in '04. As for the Republicans this year, what's better: picking a candidate who can't win or picking one you don't want to win?
