No you are completely wrong here, it is not about the text displayed when you check them. It is you are invading their privacy without their permission.

If a guy is on a 1st date with a woman and she hangs her purse on a chair and it is hanging open, now a guy could be curious and lean over and look inside her purse and see what she has in it, she sees him do this and chances are he won't get a second date. Or your waitress is wearing a low cut dress and leans over to pour you some water, you could check out her boobs but if you get caught you could get the stink-eye x2. So you restrain yourself and don't look, because you are trying to make a good impression.

Japanese always try to make the good impression with others. No one is stopping you from checking out a waitress' rack but if you do you make a bad impression. No one is stopping the /check but if you do it to someone who considers it rude you just insulted them.

Actually, most of the respondents indicated that it was just SE's bad wording. Very few indicated that they cared that much about being checked except for when it is a prelude to begging for help. Most of them had the same attitude that most NA's had, which is get over it.

The arguments for not checking people are very pretty on the outside, but when it comes to practicality, they don't hold much water.

I mostly only check players if...

1. They have a piece of gear that catches my eye. Usually then I question why they wear it and why I even bothered to examine them in the first place.

2. Bazzars, nuff said.

3. In case I know them or something.

4. Compare their gear to mine.

I will admit though, that whole "PLAYER examines you." message is annoying as hell. Even though SE added a filter on it. I question why they put it in the game on the first place.

I don't consider myself a weaboo or anything as such, but I've tried to learn a little JP, mostly just common words and phrases, courtesies, job names and such... it's not that I'm crazy about Japan or anything, but it's just courtesy to want to try to communicate with other players in a way that is best understood. And most JPs, if you make an effort to use some Japanese, will respond in kind with broken English. /shrug

I mean, if someone who only speaks Spanish approaches you trying to ask for directions or something, are you going to scream at them in English and refuse to help them until they speak English?

No, perhaps I should have clarified better. When I said that I had in mind the 13 year old Naruto fan boy spamming 4kids and Adultswim macros. I know a few phrases as well mainly because when I was on Pandy I was in a Japanese dynamis and Sky LS. Not because I was weaboo but because the leader and I developed a friendship through crafting. (She and I both are Veteran Goldsmiths)

I mean making a concerted effort into learning another language that is completely foreign to your own is much more different and noble as opposed to some nigga in Cleveland than spams "wwwwwwwwwwwwwwww" in an everyday English conversion or Linkshell. Or perhaps macros that contain any of the following: "To become Hokage is my dream!" "Kuwaiiiiiiiii" or "Kage Bunshin no Jutsu?!". I should have clarified it in more detail, those are whom to which I was referring. I think alot of people here know more than a handful of people that fall into those categories.

I respect and understand how you feel here, but it has nothing to do with FFXI, because in FFXI you have the option of disabling it. So while you are RIGHT it does not APPLY. Try to remain factual and reasonable.

That's fine, and that's your prerogative, but you have the ability to disable the notification.

You want to know when someone judges you, even though it bothers you. Don't project that onto other people, it's not fair. It's like having a "rape shield" that would stop all attempts at rape before they even start, works so well that you wouldn't even KNOW about it if someone WOULD have tried..... and refusing to use it because you wont know who would or wouldn't have raped you otherwise.

It's pretty stupid to compare real life with FFXI in this scenario.

You can filter the damn message in FFXI. You can be completely obvious to the whole /check thing if you wanted to be. If you choose to be annoyed by it then you're really no better than the supposedly rude person /checking you.

I have a right to check you if we are both in the same event or party, especially if I am the leader of the event or party, because I have a right to know if you are poorly geared, and it is nice to see if you are well geared, because I will be more kind to you and more willing to accept AFK if you need to, rather than the person who is wearing low quality gear who isn't contributing as much to the group.

This is all irrelevant players should be judged on performance, period. In this stage of the game's life cycle there are countless players on sold accounts. Many sold accounts have great gear and people playing the characters who don't know wtf they are doing. Also there are many characters of retired players which have been passed off to a friend who may not have ever leveled that characters Main job so again they don't know wtf they are doing but could have great gear. Conversely there are some great players who retired a job a year or two ago and for whatever reason are on it for an event and had to make due with what they had on hand or off AH.

If you are doing "events" of such importance that a single gimp body in a pick-up group can make of break the event then quite simply you fail. You should either have a static or LS do the event or at the least make-up the core you need to get the job done and added bodies, even gimp ones are just insurance.

Believe it or not there are people who have just started playing this game and may be working on their 1st job. Yeah they have somewhat gimp gear but they try their best and take constructive criticism.

This whole notion you need to check someone to see how gimp they are is BULLSHIT, you can see enough just looking at them to tell whether they are truly gimp or not. I've been playing this game since before NA PS2 release and have seen plenty of players with great gear who sucked and plenty of players with gimp gear who played well, and I didn't have to /check them to tell the difference.

So lemme get this strait.

In a discussion about if something is rude or not, and how to address the issue, you are going to tell me that I shouldn't check someone because their gear doesn't matter it's only the performance that matters, and then in the same breath tell me I fail if I do not exceed the bare minimums for success in an event by a significant enough margin to account for at least one person being gimpy.

The thing that has always annoyed me about JPs and checking is that so many of them have no qualms about checking NAs.

And I don't care if people check me. I worked hard to earn the gear I have, if you aren't gimp there is no reason to care.
