"Japanese try to consider the other person’s situation" is the phrase I focus on here, because in taking responsibility for our requests, our "situation" is not the same as those in Japan. It is not considered impolite to speak outside the boundaries of "proper manners" anywhere in the U.S. anymore, and the Japanese fail to "consider" this when calling us rude. It's a two-way street, is what I'm getting at.
I really lol'd at this responce. This is my opinion on <[ NAHNMLS ]>: First, many <[ NA ]> players are foul-mouthed and often selfish and sarcastic (<[ so mean ]>). However, there are good people that don’t bully others. After <[ NA ]> players joined the game, <[ RMT ]> activity really took off, I think. Things like using other people’s accounts, having <[ windower ]> and <[ DualBox ]>ing are basically a given, and I think it shows a lack of morals. As for <[ BG ]> as a <[ forum ]>, I think they are too concerned with having their character names in their <[ post ]>, whereas will always post <[ /anon or no name ]>. If you display names, it just degenerates into personal attacks.
Thanks Elmer.
That's pretty clever, minor grammar aside. This is just my opinion…
Most of Japanese adapt themselves to mass, even if they are not happy to do so,
and consider it as a virtue.
It is really important for them not to make somebody unpleasant.
So… Japanese are easy to miss to make themselves happy.
They have very poor means for self-assertiveness.
And, they hate who doesn’t adopt oneself to mass.
Japanese loves “One for all” but hates “All for one(me)”
Very informative, thank you Elmer.
Thank you Elmer
About the last post. I have never had a JP tell me No
Did I miss something? Hate to sound rude or ignorant but I've never seen anyone call someone offesnively a monkey XDThe day service began for foreigners, Sarutabaruta was just littered with corpses. I would throw a Cure and say something nice, like, “You can do it!” and they would respond with foul language like <[ "You JAP?!" ]> or <[ fuck ]> or <[ monkey ]> and such. After that, I just stopped giving out Cures and sort of avoided foreigners. I always wanted to know why North American players would act it such a way. Honestly, people who study a little Japanese to speak with us are the most popular.
Are we saying something that means a totally different topic to what we think it does?
Overall Elmer very very good read. Nice to see the replies positive and negative. This may possibly change a few of the things I personally do in game regarding Japanese players.
Quite upset how they would prefer a JP-only Server, I like the multi-cultural differences each server has.
What I found odd with that quote is that it could be taken to say that, were it not for anon posting, that JP boards would be the same way. Or at least, that the people posting on them would not be as polite as some might lead on. To an extent, the opposite is true...if people know who you are, even to an extent, it encourages a measure of civility to avoid dealing with repercussions in-game.
Some of the other comments, like the anti-NA sentiment, almost seem like a throwback to a few years ago. I mean, I think most of us have certain things we have reservations about, especially with pickup type groups. A bad experience or three, and the general attitude of "screw pickup merit parties" or something will come up.
Maybe also has to do with time zone? Many of the more mature players on the NA side are also at least semi responsible adults that tend to need to sleep or go to work. So the JP might see a larger percentage of kids on vacations or something, which can tend to be a bad representation of our playerbase as a whole.
I think it's in general to make characters more distinctive. Things like hair color are far less subtle, especially when going back to the root of anime with manga, on cheap newsprint. Large eyes are easier to make expressive. If you consider the influences, the style for Astro Boy and the like was derived some from Betty Boop and such too. At that point, you're looking at "cartoon character" moreso than making it look like a particular race.I read it is simply because Caucasian features are more distinctive. Even to Japanese people Caucasians are more easily identifiable.
There are plenty of anime and manga where the characters are Asian looking when the character is meant to be Asian and so on. Also plenty where the story isn't actually set in Japan.
I think it's a valid point, but at the same time comics and cartoons aren't exactly known for their accurate portrayal of human anatomy to begin with.
I recall it was something Japanese called Americans moreso than something we called them. However, it's been a while since I lived in Japan.Did I miss something? Hate to sound rude or ignorant but I've never seen anyone call someone offesnively a monkey XD
Let them ask us questions, and also let them see our responses to their questions. the main thing that popped out to me is that there was quite a bit of hypocritical responses, just off the top of my head some of the main ones that jumped out at me were about when they were saying things like "NA shouldnt sub war in meripo" and other things of that nature that NA shouldnt do. I find it highly arrogant of them to assume that their way is the only way to do things. Now while i fully agree that in most cases, having your melees sub ninja is a good thing, I do think that they place far too much value on ones mp pool. personally, i think you should be able to give your healer a good workout. that doesnt mean they should have to be taking a knee every two seconds, but with a balanced setup it really shouldn't be an issue... it makes one wonder if they're trying to breed lazy mages, incompetant mages, or just that they have no real faith in the healing capabilities of whm; etc...
I guess i'm just tired of showing up to merit parties where the healer stays at over 1k mp all the time because they simply can't use enough of it before it regens back, and then complain if someone doesnt sub ninja and they have to use a little of it...
I think the various #chans are enough to prove this right. If you really think about it, even on sites with frequent drama bombs, like this one, the people know when to pull that shit in and focus, if only occasionally. The small amount of identity we create gives us an equal sense of responsibility. Take a look at an anon conversaton and things degrade to their lowest point, no exceptions.
Oh, about the monkey thing, didn't he mention it being in sarutabaruta?...
Pretty sure Saru is a word for monkey, could have just been a misunderstanding.
As for the separate servers, I have a feeling that the NA side, while having a lot of players, wouldn't fair as well as the JP side. Just take a look at PSU. With their separated servers its dying.
Oh man, they must have had a spazz over campaign, it's full of selfish (and frequently short-sighted) play-styles.Japanese loves “One for all” but hates “All for one(me)”
Pretty awesome Elmer.
Sadly, it just shows that I am correct to never party with JPs ever. But then again, I don't want to party with 90% of NAs either.
Very interesting, as per usual, thanks Elmer for all your hard work. As usual you deserve an interwebs or two. Never realized they appreciated the broken JP (I might have to start using it a little more when I invite a JP player whenever I get back into the game <<).
The thing that was very interesting, at least to me, is how much they envision us NAs as being extremely selfish, which kind of makes me wonder what do they really mean by that.
Being brought in a more traditional Chinese way I somewhat understand where they're coming from but at the same time not exactly sure what they would consider selfish, cause due to the responses we have similar views on things but have different cultural differences (which is more than understandable). I do feel that NAs are more rude (what I mean is NAs tend to be more to the point than being polite, but that can't be help as both races have those cultural differences.) but selfish, I'm quite unsure.
IMO the betterment of the group overall matters more than how we get there so I don't exactly get how NAs come off as selfish is kind of beyond me.
And yes NAs tend to be more crazy :D which I love way more about NAs than JP players. I find JP players tend to be more conservative than outgoing, which I think is due to the conformity thing.
