Melees, please come to merit parties as sub-NIN, not sub-SAM. This is something I really want <[ NA ]> to understand. It makes me feel bad for <[ NA ]> healers. Using sub-NIN will make you super efficient. Your death-rate will go way down. Using Utsusemi will save your healers a lot of <[ MP ]>. Japanese don’t see <[ MP ]> as something that should be sacrificed to make you stronger.

I'm sure they are. Unless large amounts of MNKs, THFs, and BLUs are subbing SAM and I never heard of it, I think they days when we should listen to everything JPs say has long since passed.

Thank you for all this time spent, Elmer, it was a really interesting read!

Would also love them asking us questions in return, could maybe help us understand them a bit more.

Awake now... thanks for all the responses.

very enlightening and also funny-thanks elmer. i don't know if it's the translation or they seem to speak their minds well. and here we are with 1-liners like "epic fail," etc.
Maybe it was because of the thread, or because I was a foreigner, but they didn't really use much slang. They used game/forums-specific terms, but nothing like "epic fail," meme stuff. That isn't to say they don't have it though. There's actually a "meme" section on their JP wiki like BGWiki has. They call those phrases ネタ "neta."

Also don't forget if you find some things they said offensive.. they are under the overwhelming power of ANONYMOUS aren't they?
It's interesting how even their forum culture is so different. I think without that extra level of anonymity, users couldn't post. In general, they are really non-confrontational and would be pretty taken aback by the fighting that happens on our forums.

Also, for all the people wondering if we can answer their questions: I'm going to request some more questions from them. During the thread they didn't really post any, although they hinted at some stuff they would like to know at times.

Yeah, thanks for the hard work, Elmer. It would really informative finding out what JP players find amusing, disgusting and what they appreciate. Although, I'm a bit concern at the level of hypocrisy.

Well, to be honest, it makes me think the JP community do give a little care for how we play the game and out etiquette towards other players.

I would like to see this in reverse format from them to us for any questions and answers and comments. Maybe they have things they'd like to ask us?

We could give some very positive answers to anything they desire and hopefully retain some of the community spirit this game has seemed to lose as time passes more and more.

Do you think they would be very interested in this? Or do they not really care much for our ways? I think they do tbh. The occasional few may still see this as "their game". But the majority seem like they can cope well and learn form our multicultural differences.

PS: I've stopped saying "w" after every funny sentence to fellow JP members in my LSs hehe.

I hate how JP keep calling NA rude because we don't have the same concepts of politeness as them. Rudeness is completely arbitrary.

    For example:
In most American cities that have arcades, placing a quarter/token next to the start button indicates you have the right to play the game next(or vs. the Winner of the current match). However I went to China Town to play some SF3:Third Strike and i placed a token on the start button, then when the match was over some chinese guy shoved me out of the way and put his tokens in. Before i could kick his ass, someone told me thats their culture and its considered normal to push someone to go next instead of waiting in line. Also I hear in Japan you don't casually hug/kiss friends or relatives because it's only something lovers do and it's considered awkward/rude to do so. Does that mean if 2 american friends hug eachother they're being rude or impolite? No. So when Japanese people say it's rude that NA replace people in parties, it may be for them but they make it seem like it's breaking some universal rule of conduct or something...

That's frickin' funny. Although I think you just got pushed by a really rude guy because I can't imagine that being possible...

Damn, what if someone steals your quarter and runs?

"After the NA players came in, one weird thing that changed was no more lotting."

I remember people would always argue over this, but I'm glad it changed. Imagine lotting everything during a TP burn.

No matter how many JP's hate NA's...Midgar has Alfheim. He kinda makes up for it.

Thank you so much Elmer for doing this. I've wondered about Japanese people telling me JP only when I invite them to parties and whether attempting to speak the language was bad, etc. I'm glad that at least I can use my limited knowledge of the language to make them feel comfortable, lol. ^^

I agree on asking us questions and us answering in return. I'd like to know what they wonder about when it comes to Na/Eu players.

I was a little surprised to read that as well. I'd rather strain the mages mp for faster exp than have a mage sit there full mp the entire time.

Most people's idea of "straining a mage's MP" is "don't pay any fucking attention a mage's MP and go all out full time and then die and bitch about not getting cured."

Yah. I'm with the JPs on this one <_< Go /nin and let me not be on edge the whole time curedumping. I don't mind so much on DRG, since they can jump and not take dmg for a while, but drks.. bleh, especially when they stick every JA on and then throw on all the black gear they can find.

That was wonderful Elmer, thank you very much for taking the time to do that.

In my experience with Japanese players, I have also found that taking the effort to explain yourself slowly and in detail helps with them feeling more comfortable, and vice versa. I have, at times leveling up jobs in the 30-60s especially, found great joy in working together with the Japanese, and have discovered camps I had never seen before while playing during JP prime time.

While I respect that these are their impressions and feelings towards Americans in general, I can't help but feel that there was a bit of a complex coming from some of the responses. At this juncture it's not fair for them to act like they have some superior knowledge of the game or that the way certain people play the game is wrong. From their reaction I can see why it took windower so long to be implemented, they think anything that gives someone an edge or allows multitasking is wrong.

You're partying with the wrong DRKs.

    On-topic:

Interesting information overall (adaberk, indigo, etc.). Specially about the communication part. Honestly not surprised they dislike foreigners (wish they'd stop grouping us all together though..), with the aberrations I've seen (specially those lovely Whitegate shouts wars). Hopefully this'll open new pathways to us getting along better. Appreciate your efforts, Elmer, thanks ^_^.

I'm still really interested in hearing their view of claimbots. Clearly a lot of them use them, but is it still a big enough deal to them that they keep it secret, or are they unapologetic about it like many of the linkshells on BG are?
