Read this last night and thought i'd pull out my best JP during campaign! Its just that after my really well placed Arigatou I got a string of strange symbols thrown at my face that it I didn't know what to do with xD. It would be so embarresing to say something in broken JP only to have to say {I don't understand Japanese} afterwards. I'd feel like a farce, a poser who pretends he's all cool like to speak japanese while he doesnt even know more then a couple of words. Even though I can understand that they are embarresed about speaking broken english it can't be worse then all those english players who have never even learned a word of japanese.

I can't believe I'm saying this but english is a world language isn't it? Pretty much everyone gets some basic form of english at school. Only the people specializing in linguistics will be able to understand some basic japanese be it romanji, or the squigly language (katakana? or something). I don't go around talking to everyone in Dutch and expect them to understand me, maybe a few germans will and a lot of english people who had german classes might recognise a few words but the difference isn't that big as with the japanese language.

Knowning that they put JP ONLY mostly because of language is great news to me, I would have been kind of dissapointed if they would have said it is because they think we are bad players. Hopefully with all those question answered we can adjust ourselves to fit their needs better. Of course there will always be retard NA players with bad manners, same applies to some japanese players but you know what I mean.

    10/10 for making this.

Also, +1 for the reverse thing, let's answer their questions.

The very last comment made, when the survey was done, really came as an eye-opener to me. I have always known to some degree that the Japanese are extremely polite and dislike to say no, cause its rude, but I had no idea it seems tentament to killing mother Theresa in church.

And as for the /check, well I'd get pissed off too if when checked I got the message "Player A stares fixedly at Player B". :/

One thing though, about the servers, one person replied "The Auto-Translate function is incomplete, and the necessary phrases we petition for never get added."
Just a crazy thought, but, maybe the japanese players would feel more kindly towards the rest of us, if we also started a mass-petition towards SE fixing this. It would in the end, be rewarding ourselves too.

The conformity thing is very ingrained in Japanese culture, to my understanding. When I went over there, I was talking with a friend who was teaching part-time, and he explained to me that the schools he was teaching at had no "special ed" type classes, even if the children actually required that sort of attention/class, and that they found it more important to keep those children with the rest of the "normal" children, to make them feel part of the group.

About them talking about needy NAs, people who /tell for Raises, or Warps... I'd be willing to say that's more of an NA only thing. I've had my fair share of people cuss me out, in /tell usually, when I don't rush to Raise them or Warp them (usually when you're about to enter a Dynamis-Valkrum). I've never had this type of issue with JP, or hell, anyone not NA to my knowledge. You probably know people like this, even in your LS maybe, who're ready to bitch and moan at the drop of a hat, but it's honestly not a problem we can fix. I'd tell the JP to ignore them, because the rest of us NA ignore that type of person too.

As for the whole /NIN vs /SAM thing, it's good 'ol shit is situational. I haven't PT'd /NIN, or with /NINs in a while, SAMs go /WAR, MNK's go /WAR, etc, with usually only a RDM/WHM, and maybe a BRD or COR/WHM. It does get a little dicey, but it's fun, but I only really do this with LS mates, if I LFG you bet my ass i'm getting the /NINs if I don't know who i'm looking at. But then again, I don't really LFG for merits anymore.

    Elmer:

Apologies if someone else asked this already. In light of japanese players warming up to those who put in effort to communicate in japanese, have you considered expanding on your japanese encyclopedia sticky? Your most recent post in that thread made reference to this website: http://www.cactusleaftl.com/ffxijiten/ though it looks like it may not be up anymore or perhaps just not loading for me.

Yeah, I sometimes tend to leave a string of broken projects in my wake
I was thinking the same thing though after seeing how they like to see Japanese, and actually just got a PM about it, too. If I was better at programming, I'd like to whip up a little browsable something that could have phrases in it. Maybe there's a Wordpress plugin that could fit the bill.

When I was studying in Japan at the time, there was a movement/demonstration happening at the diet building. There were people in wheelchairs, hospital beds, crutches all along the sidewalk, holding signs and shouting. I asked what was going using my shitty Japanese skills.

I had found out that there is absolutely no regulations or laws in place to accommodate handicapped people in any way whatsoever. Building codes did not require placement of handicapped access at all, and there were no laws in place for people who might have certain needs or have certain disabilities.

It had really shocked me at the time. Granted, this was a long time ago, and the laws might have changed since then. For a culture that was so big on accommodation and pleasing others, this seemed to throw that idea right out the window.

    Sorry, back on topic.

Grey is, by far, the best choice. Even greys like gunmetal, which have a tint of blue in it, aren't even close. The grey in PLD AFv2 is gunmetal grey, and isn't even close to the color of an adaberk! 8)

I refuse to sub nin on sam in meripo. If I'm asked to sub nin, I simply switch to mnk/nin instead.

I find that most of those people take the game way over board and by using types of racism/stereotypes. I think it is ridiculous that on a jp answer they complained about how NA's wear their gear lol wow I think it's time for them to get off the game seriously >.>

Was a really interesting read Elmer, thanks for the hard work. I too am curious to know if they have any questions they might have for NA players that they may not understand or just curious about the way we didn't fully understand their whole deal with /checking.

Well atleast we've put an end to the debate of blue or purple. Obvious answer is:

Maybe you could translate some of the responses in this thread and post to them. I know if it were reversed, I'd like to see responses to the anwers I gave. Maybe too much work.

Oh, and there was one guy who asked something like "I'd like to know what courtesies we can extend to NAs":

To me it seems like there is a certain mirroring of politeness. They feel /check is rude, we feel it is not. They feel saying "no" to a request is rude and saying "JP only" is not, we feel saying "JP only" is rude and saying "no" is not.

Could point that out to them so they understand why we don't like being told "JP only". We see that as an implicit racial slur. Even though of course, it has been explained now to be mostly a language barrier issue.

Was nice to see their answers but I do have to say that seeing how the vast majority of them want JP only servers was really disappointing.

I honestly think that the language barrier is just a bullshit response they use just to not seem xenophobic. I'm not from an english speaking country and in my line of work I have to deal with foreigners from several different countries from around the world, and if there's something my work has taught me its that its not really hard to get your point across with a minimal understanding of english.

Lets face it, FFXI isn't such a complex game that you need to have very specific and clear orders, especially not for experience parties (which is where the JP players will interact more with everyone else). Having JP only for BCNMs and HNMs is understandable, but demanding it in parties is simply being narrowminded.

Well... overall considering Japanese society, your brought up to respect people. Have polite manners etc for the most part back in the day. That transfers over to the game, group need > your need, helping others etc

I remember when I played I saw nothing but NA shouts "need people to do this, I need raise, I need gil, where do I go to do etc etc"

overtime, weather the JP did or didn't want to associate with NA they had to, and weather they knew it or not it was affecting them slowly imo

Anyway to the point about Jp only servers... I think more of what they want is "Less spammer/less idiots" server which I'm sure we can all agree on there are many "fail" players NA and JP and we'd like to separate from them.

I made a new post with some overall reactions to their answers.

With /check, it seems to be "If you know it's just the message, why does it still bother you?" versus "If you know it bothers us, why do you still do it?"

I also put up the ultramarine pic. Maybe they can take some pride in helping create a meme, however short-lived it may turn out to be.
