    My eye

So yesterday, I woke up and my right eye kinda itched, so I kept rubbing it. Then I went back to sleep. Anyway, it kinda got swollen, and now the eyelid is like really swollen, and there's kind of a constant pain. If hurts whenever I touch the eyelid, not unbearable, but definitely a noticeable amount. The eye itself isn't really red or anything, but the eyelid is. I can't open it all the way and it looks like I have a lazy eye or something since it's open less than the other eye.

Any ideas what it is or how to get rid of it? My mom said it was probably a sty(sp?) or something, but if there's any way to make it go away or speed the healing please let me know.

Ya, sounds like a fungal infection. The tell tale signs were that it itched, you should see a doctor if you want the quickest recovery possible.

Well it only itched that one morning really, after that it was just painful.

Blah, wish this had happened a few days ago when I already had an appointment though...

    what O.o ??

I have had a similar situation in the past - I gently poured some warm tea (that had a lot of leaves in it) over my eye, head tilted back. Probably a few drops - not an entire cup. Then I used a sheet of bounty soaked in tea and kept it over my eye and laid down for a bit. Got better fast.

I've had a dozen of these, they really suck. I went to a few doctors about them and half the time the doctor hadn't even seen one before. There was one doc I went to where I was sitting in the chair and he actually called people to come in and look at it. It sucked.

I've tried the ointments the doctors give you, never had any luck. I ever tried to have one of them removed by an opthomologist(sp), but hah! Hi 2 u scar tissue on my eyelid. And if you don't manage to get rid of them, they can leave a nice little bump on your eye that may or may not ever go away.

I think of it like a zit on your eyelid. One good way to help at least reduce the pain/swelling is a hot compress: take a washcloth, get it fairly damp with tap water, then put it in the microwave for about a minute. It should come out too hot to hold to your eye, but as soon as you can hold it there, do so.. And just hold it against your eye until the washcloth goes cold. That helps the swelling. The best preventative thing I found (not sure if it actually helps get rid of it but it might) was to take baby shampoo, put a little in the palm of your hand, dilute it a little with hot water, and then swab your eyelid at the base of your eyelashes with a q-tip dipped in the diluted baby shampoo.

If you want it to go away right now, hope that it comes to a head somewhere accessible then pop/drain/clean. Usually they come to a head right at your eyelashes (there are pores there afaik, where I said to clean with the baby shampoo), and though it's really hard to pop them, once you do you can drain the thing out and it's usually gone within a day.

Been dealing with these things on and off for like 11? 12? years now.

There's over the counter meds for stys. It's an eye dropper basically. 2-3 applications and by morning the sty is gone. What i did when i had one. If it doesn't work, you might consider allergies. My eyes will swell a bit when i have a bad allergy going, usually from pollen in the air. My brother gets it so bad it looks like he has 2 black eyes.

I used to have a lot of problems with stys a few years ago. A few got so bad that the optometrist had to make an incision in my eyelid to properly drain them and clean them out. Also suffer from high ocular pressure so I take topical steroids for them every now and then. Don't have to take them as much as I used to as long as I keep my hands away from my eyes and make sure to wash my sheets every week so you don't end up sleeping in your on any possible infected bits.

Anyway yeah, the advice other people have said should be fine in keeping your eye clean and helping with getting rid of the infection. If it lingers though without any improvement, go see a doctor.

May as well post this here and see if anyone has had similar experiences-

Quite often I feel like I just have stuff in my eye.. like a little grain of sand, or whatever... and its annoying as hell, usually lasts for a day or so. Its not unbearable but its definitely annoying, doubly so that it happens maybe once a week at worst, once every few months at best. It seems to alternate eyes... If I mess around with my eyelid a lot trying to clean it out it tends to go away for a bit but always comes back

So.. something in my eye, or something else going on? I've never successfully 'cleaned' it out.

Just a guess, but do you have long hair? I have long hair that goes a little lower than my eyebrows, and I get that feeling somethings - it's my hair either coming in contact with my eye or something similar.

    If not, I don't know

Thanks, this is good advice. I'll try using a hot washcloth and see how that goes. If it doesn't help I'll try the tea things / baby shampoo. Hopefully I can get it drained out soon, because it's incredibly annoying and got worse since I made this thread.

This happens if you watch animals defecate or go near unclean animals.

Pluck some of the eyelashes that the stye is either in or around, may help with drainage. I haven't had too many of these, mostly when I was younger. Don't even think about popping it like a zit, that could be extremely bad.

Why exactly would that be bad? And so far I haven't been able to release any pressure...

You may wind up getting it infected if you attempt to pop it. I was advised by a doctor not to do so when I had one in the past.

Nah, not long hair. Not like buzzcut, but I'd say generally short male hairstyle. I seriously think something is going on; I had an eye infection a few years back and all I really remember is the mucous under my eyelids was solidifying (sleepy dust or whatever you might call it that you find in the corner of your eyes when you wake up) and I'd have it stuck directly under my eyelid, basically attached to the underside. I once stayed up six hours just picking the crap off because it was keeping me up, definitely the most agonizing thing I've done.

That being said, I wonder if its something related.
