Not all protesters possess an in-depth knowledge of American history and political science as well as the current politics of the world.

Some people have just enough exposure to these issues and then the rest is guided by an intuitive sense of right/wrong and justice/etc. This isn't unique to just anti-war people. I'm sure protesters of everything from clubbing baby seals to pineapple on pizza have "their" reasons. Often they might not hold up in a serious debate either. Sometimes people like this are just grandstanding but in other cases they are just but simply don't possess an empirical knowledge of the events/issues.

In any case, lots of people are like that. They just may not choose to protest.

I don't think we should expect people to be William Buckley or Noam Chomskey or anything in between (although Buckley is soft in comparison to neocons today).

Take from it what you will, but it's been noted that Republicans are much more savvy (knowledge wise) of politics and the political process. Actually, we're just smarter around the board.

ORLY? I'd ask for proof but then I don't think it matters. The Republican party has changed so much in the past 20 years. Conservatism has changed so much as well - at least in the populist sense.
