Yes, I've had things like that happen. I don't usually hold a grudge against that person or group, unless it seemed intentional or has happened repeatedly. There are other actions, such as camping on top of my party, that I will hold a grudge over.1
Have you ever had someone from your own country do something bad to you? For example, they invite you to replace someone, and when you get there, they just disband. Do you hold a grudge against the person who invited you in that case, or do you think “Oh well,” and just forget about it?
I am not aware of any in-game help lists. In the earlier days of FFXI, we did have a few experienced Japanese players that posted on some of the larger English speaking forums who were a great help to some of us in learning the basics and giving some perspective on how the game developed over time.2
I heard that on foreign boards there is a list of useful Japanese players that will help people out. Do you really have such a list?
In addition, some Japanese players are known for soloing efforts due to videos posted online and linked to on English speaking forums.
The primary reason NA will invite JP to a party is simply because they're on a job we need to round out the group. The language barrier is a downside, however, the goal is simply to make a working party setup.3
I don’t go out of my way to invite NA players to my party, but NA players often invite Japanese players. What are the benefits and drawbacks of inviting a Japanese player to your party?
Other pros and cons have more to do with the individual. The reputation that Japanese players have is that of good gear and skill, and sticking with a party. Not all actually do, though most that I've partied with did. Still, the reason they were invited was simply to fill the job slot needed.
While I have not had Japanese players directly insult me, I have been subject to very inconsiderate behavior on their behalf. Leveling BST particularly, I was camped on top of, had them start farming mobs I was XPing on (or pets), MPKed by JP players changing armor on their NPCs who killed my pets off...4
Has there been a time when a Japanese player has hurt or insulted you? Also, what are some actions that are normal for us that you find disagreeable? I’m interested to know and would like to hear your thoughts.
Now, I recognize that far more players may have seen I was there and been more considerate. I also had some nice experiences duoing and trioing with Japanese BSTs. That was simply something where a lot of the bad experiences I had were due to Japanese players as well.
Generally speaking, NA are open to anyone who respond to shouts. Communication maybe harder, but there's the assumption that we can find a way to say what needs to be said via auto translate. It's not just Japanese players who may be seeing a shout, but EU players who don't speak English as well. So using that is attempting to address as wide an audience as possible.5
Lots of NA players exclusively use Auto-Translate when recruiting for Assault and other activities. Does this mean that you are targeting Japanese players as well? I’m fairly knowledgeable when it comes to Missions and Assault, but I barely know any English, and worry if I should even send a tell.
That being said, I feel that many NA players do abuse auto translate, and don't take into account that not everything means what they think it means.
It could be that they hate the people less, and more hate the attitude that can be presented by Japanese players. If they really needed a healer for their XP party, but the only ones available were Japanese and refused to party with him because he wasn't Japanese, that would create tension.6
I’ve had a foreign player say to me, “I hate Japanese people.” But Final Fantasy is a Japanese game. If you hate us, why play?
Some of us understand the awkwardness that the language barrier can create. I've lived in several foreign countries, including Japan, so I can empathize. Others just figure auto-translate is good enough for them, and should be good enough for anyone.
That FFXI is made by a Japanese company is true, but remember that it's also localized and marketed in the U.S. It's not as though someone needs to import a copy in order to play.
There aren't a whole lot of new subscribers coming in on the U.S. side either. I see a lot more people coming back to the game than entirely new players.7
A lot of time has passed since service began in Japan, and you barely see any new subscribers coming in. Are there new NA players still joining?
No-lifer would be one. A number of NA players understand, and use, the term "haijin" as well.8
In Japan, players that play long periods of time, have many Lvl 75 jobs, possess tons of high-level equipment, and who are usually filled with prejudice and contempt are called 廃人 <[ ( hai jin ) " High Level person but disable from living real life " ]>. Is there a similar name you use for NA players who are like that?
The vast majority of NA players completely hate RMT and gil farmers. Buying gil or characters is looked down on.9
Is there opposition against the practice of RMT or the use of third party tools? What do you do if your friend or Linkshell uses them? How do you feel about RMT業者 (gyou sha) or gil farmers?
Third party tools, it depends. Botting or really hacking the game is looked down on. Things like windower and basic plugins (showing info like recasts, distance, TP, etc) are common, and while we have some players who are opposed to them, most aren't. PC players are generally used to a more robust interface from other games, many of which include that sort of info already.
::shudder:: We have our subligar fans too. Nothing specific comes to mind, though many people have their town gear sets that they like the look of, some of which include non combat pieces like nation aketons, beastman hats, or crafting gear.10
In Japan, there are some people who are huge subligar fans. Are there any amongst foreign players, or is there another piece of equipment that is especially popular?
