Yes, this isn't an uncommon thing in my opinion. I believe that there are just certain people that are rude like this and it has nothing to do with whether the targeted person is NA or JP.

I have never heard of a list like this.

I would invite a Japanese player to my party because sometimes the number of people looking for a party is very limited. While communication is slightly harder if there is a Japanese player, the Auto-translate feature usually has enough phrases to inform Japanese players of the camp and other information. Also, I think that it's worth getting a player that has the correct job to fill the missing spots in the party, regardless of nationality.

I have had a few times when Japanese players did rude things such as camping on top of my exp party, but I have never had one personally insult me. However, i do feel somewhat insulted when i hear a Japanese player say that all NA players are rude and selfish because I fall under the NA category.

I often use the Auto-Translate feature for exactly this reason. It doesn't matter if a player is NA or JP, if they want to do the Mission/Assault I would take them.

While Final Fantasy was made in Japan, it is open for people from many areas to play, and I think that people would play it if they thought it was fun, even if the person is racist like the one that you spoke to.

I don't see too many new NA players. It's probably very similar to what you see. I wish there were more because it is very hard to level a low-level job sometimes

I, as well as nearly everyone I know, are against RMT. There are times when the RMT ruin parts of the game for the legitimate players. As for third party tools, I am very against any tools to aid in movement (teleportation), or claiming, however i see tools such as Windower as innocent. If members of my Linkshell were using tools to claim mobs or move around they would be kicked from the Linkshell.

There are certain items (subligar included) that are popular for certain people, but I don't really know of any item that is popular throughout the whole foreign community. A lot of people get a laugh out of subligar

Yes, all the time, but I don't really hold grudges so much as I choose not to party with that person in the future.

I invite people purely based on what jobs I think will make the party proceed at the fastest possible rate. That being said, if there are two similarly equipped jobs of the same level, and one is JP and the other is NA, I will invite the NA for communication purposes.

I have been offended more often by NA players, but that might just be because I can understand them. NA players are more insecure.

Yes, when I do this it means I am targeting players of all languages, however if you can't communicate with me, don't expect me to teach you what to do.

Here's an explanation of what this means:
In middle school they have school trips, just like most of us do. They are allowed to bring a bento (lunchbox meal) along with them. The bento is made at home and includes a sandwich, fish, rice, veggies... some combination of those things.

Students are also allowed to bring snacks, but there is a limit (usually 300 yen) set on the amount of snacks they can bring, since those are desserts, candies, etc. A banana, being a fruit, remains on the fence between lunch and dessert, and gave rise to this running gag.

It's nothing to think too deeply about, but feel free to give your opinion on the matter.

Of course. Most people, in fact. You can't be hurt more than by the person who knows you best. The only grudge I've ever held and continue to hold has more to do with how a person affected my friends than me personally, and it was more serious than a petty matter like coming to a disbanded PT. Things that happen in a PT are hard to take personally for me, I judge PT members solely on skill. That's the main thing that causes me to avoid certain people. Anything else, just roles off the back. You're mad, but you can't go on a crusade when you don't know all the facts.

NAs will invite JPs for many different reasons, but the most common is probably because JPs were the first to play this game and most people will keep that in mind. The reality is there hasn't been a real skill gap for 4 years and on many servers, NAs and EUs have dominated most End Game events. In my experience, no one goes out of their way to invite a JP, we just go for them because there's nothing else (of course, it's a moot point, since JPs rarely agree to join anyway.) The language barrier is a drawback, but only in situations where communication in necessary. Parties are so simple, all you really need is to know your job and then do it. Anything specific can be expressed through auto-trans (BRD songs, COR Rolls.)

Definitely. A particularly memorable time was when I was leaving a PT and invited someone to replace me, thinking things would be fine. The PT disbanded after I left without telling me they might do that, and the JP person I had invited got angry with me and threatened to call a GM. I could barely understand the person, but I just shrugged it off. I hadn't done anything wrong, in fact I did what was honorable. I could have just left, as I sometimes do, but the PT wasn't so bad that I'd just leave them like that, so I invited someone and informed them that I'd be leaving. There have probably been other times JPs threw shit in my direction, but I never understand them, so it may as well never happen.
The only thing I find disagreeable is the whole 'JP Only' concept. This game is painfully simply, most people can do their job well enough without instruction. If they can't, odds are they'd suck in an NA PT too. When I'm in a PT, I never speak unless I'm leaving. Communication is Overrated.

We do this because after a point, we don't care who we get, we just want someone. To us, the language barrier is more of a social limitation than a functional one. Most things can be explained pretty well with auto-trans, and if they can't, as long as the person knows their role, that's all we need anyway. Auto-translation doesn't just translate into JP, btw. ;/
It's all about using the biggest net you can to catch every fish.

There is GREAT opposition against RMT, but 3rd party tools are more of a grey area. Speed hacks and claimbots are generally frowned upon, but in HNM sometimes claimbots are so widespread that you need one just to stand a fighting chance. Then there's the more benign things, like windower which practically everyone uses for the perks that come with them, like TPparty and such. I doubt any of my friends have used bots, but I know their LSs do. Since the people they competed with were just as cut-throat (and I had friends in both groups) I just didn't think about it. I'd prefer we didn't need them and I really hate the idea of it all, but I'm not gunna start disowning my friends over something I'm not even sure they have control over.
Being involved in RMT will automatically make you a pariah to every man, woman, and child on your server and beyond. NAs have absolutely no tolerance for them and will immediately dispose of one if they're found out. Most people see Gilsellers and Gilbuyers in the same light, people who ruin the game either by monopolizing camps or manipulating/ruining the economy.

Not in the same way, no. NAs generally got over the Subligar craze a while ago. We mainly concern ourselves with good looking or powerful gear.

Yes, bad things happen with people from my same nationality, along with others. I've also had shell types of all nationalities mpk, steal, and camp ontop of me before.

I don't know of any list, but there are some infamous Japanese like Donald of Asura who lotted all Dynamis AF2, regardless of if he had the job leveled or not. He had more AF than some Dynamis shells.

People invite Japanese players because we assume they'll at least have a basic understanding of how the party or assault will work out. In most cases, it's because it's a needed job, like rdm or brd.

When NAs use the auto-translate, they hope that Japanese people would also be willing to join.

Additional comment:
Through common use, it's easier to use the auto-translate instead of writing complete sentences even when talking to other NAs. I'm not 100% sure on this, but I think Japanese/Chinese keyboard have an auto complete system built in for when they type? English keyboards have no such thing in common systems, so using the auto-translate is something similar to that. I have no idea how to spell something like "Bubimura Peninsula"... I just always type "Bub" and tab to auto-complete it. It also annoys me when people use [level] [cap] for "level cap" when [cap] means head gear.

Also... A banana costs like 5 cents? Frozen bananas are good though, also dried banana chips.

Yes, it happens all the time. The NA that treat you poorly, most likely aren't doing it because you're Japanese. They do it because they're an asshole and would do it to anyone. As for the pt disbanding when I get there, I don't hold a grudge, but I do ask if the party plans on staying for a long time, before accepting the invite.

I don't think I've ever been harassed by a JP player, but they do like to target me more often than not in Ballista

When I use auto translate, I'm targeting anyone who wants to go on the run, regardless of language.

The language barrier is always hard but has never ever stopped me from inviting a Japanese player to a party. I enjoy partying with Japanese players because it helps narrow the.. It really hurts/insults me when Japanese players say "JP only" or put it in their search comments. Not all of us english speakers are horrible people and it sucks that some Japanese players won't give us a chance. At least party with us. If we suck, disband. haha.

I don't hate Japanese players. =) At all. There is always going to be someone who doesn't like another person. There is no reason for them to hate all people, but they do. There's no explanation for it. Please don't hold that one person against us all. :3

Most definitely. I personally try to stay away from the HNM scene because of all the third party tools used. I -TRY- not to hold a grudge against friends that use them because what they do with their time and money is their business but I certainly don't agree with it.
I feel that RMT's have ruined the game, to be perfectly honest.

Usually depends on the severity of the action, but it's usually something I do not forget.

Most foreign boards (at least ones that handle server forums) usually have a list of Crafters and Linkshells that include both JP and NA players. Some have forums that deal with people transferring servers for background checking purposes. But I've never seen a "Hey, this guy is really helpful!" list.

To me, I really don't care if the person is NA, JP or EU. Unfortunately, the communication barrier can be a pain in the rear. Once that is worked around, things tend to fall into place.

Besides the usual "JP ONRY," I could never think of one, unless you were talking about us in kanji and all of us were too dumbfounded.

If I'm looking to shout for something in a pick-up, it's usually in auto-translate both for ease of typing and to be inclusive to Japanese players. I remember taking a Japanese player along for an Optical Hat run.

I think it's pretty rare. World of Warcraft is the big focus these days. Also, Warhammer Online will be coming online soon, which is guaranteed to possibly draw both potential new subscribers and current subscribers away from FFXI (even if only temporary).

Too many terms... No-lifers, virgins, elitists, pricks, anti-social... But I have heard haijin adopted by some NA players.

If there's anyone most people from the NA population would like to kill, it's RMT. Being outed as a gil-buyer is probably the most devastating thing that can happen to player (if the allegations are true, of course). It hurts even more when peoples' accounts are lost daily to RMT.

Use of Windower amongst the PC population is widespread. Some choose just to use Windower, others use the plugins that come with Windower. These display things such as party members' TP, Alliance's MP, Recast times without have to enter /recast or enter the Job/Magic menu, etc.

There is another utility that is widely known, which is FFXIApp. It depends on the server/linkshell, but the abilities that stem from FFXIApp are commonly frowned upon by the general playerbase.

You'll never catch me dead in a subligar. But I'm sure they are out there. Event gear is also very common when people are in town doing nothing.

If Elmer did not expound upon it, our question about the adaman hauberk was sort of along the same lines as this question. A long time ago on the BlueGartr forum, we had a nice little fight over what color the hauberk really was: blue or purple. It still carries on to this day.

As for the bonus question, give me a couple of years to think about that one.

- I don't hold any grudges, but yesterday I have two examples of party gatherings. 1st party our leader gathered together 4 people and after an hour the leader fake disconnected and never returned. Another was someone who invited me and a few others out to pt and when we got there he had joined another pt and refused to apologize to anyone.

- Not a list, but I know of a few people who can help with translations.

- To me it doesn't matter where they are from, just so they can function well in the party. The only drawbacks i find are the communication issues. After four years+ of playing I can understand a lot of what they are trying to say in the pt, i.e. better places to camp versus what the leader wants, but sometimes it can be hard to help out younger jp players that do not know the game that well, yet.

- No, no that I remember. The only thing I disagree about is the "JP Only." Sometimes it can really limit the amount of people available, but if they would rather wait longer to get a pt, that's their choice.

- I personally think of it as a "highlighter." It grabs people's attention and gets the point across to people of other languages.

- Yes, there is a fairly large base of people who are against RMT and the use of 3rd party tools. Even though I do find the Windower pretty useful versus what SE is currently offering. I don't know of any of my friends using any hacks or buying gil.

1) I remember just as if it happened yesterday. I was seeking for party and got an invite on my BLM for Bibiki Bay. The invite was from a "NA party" (non-JP this was also before EU distribution of the game). Anyways, short story short, they don't tell me they have plans of disbanding. They disband once I get to camp and even ask for a D2. Basically it was as if they invited me to warp them... I was so angry at them but still warped out of kindness. I was very pissed off the whole day, but didn't hold a grudge on anyone. If this were to have happened a second time, I wouldn't be as nice...

2) Personally I make of list of Japanese players I have enjoyed partying with or have helped me out. I've seen some friendly encounters on forums, but not a list of players.

3) The #1 drawback: not having the same level of communication I have with NAs. The #1 benefit (IMO) knowing that I'll get a higher level of commitment (most of the time) of doing his/her job better than a "NA player".

9) Yes, we have a lot of people posting on forums info on RMT activities or new tricks they've come up with. We also like playing around with RMT. Trying to MPK them or ruin their current activity in a number of ways. Personally I stay away from linkshells that use 3rd party methods.

This is somewhat of a common occurrence, but it isn't just limited to people of my own country. Its happened to me from people in Canada, Great Britain, Japan... etc. When it happens, usually I just blacklist the person to prevent further interaction with such inconsiderate people. I may warn my friends about the person as well.

I've never seen such a list myself, but I have seen lists of useful players in general.

Honestly, when building a party we tend to look at how useful the job is to our setup, before any language concerns. Autotranslate can be enough to communicate your needs to a non-english speaking player.

Yes there has, and like any person, I just consider that person rude and blacklist if needed. The action I've found to be the most disagreeable is how strange JP players react to examine. Sometimes JP players can be very rude about it.

We use autotranslate to maximize our options. That way we can reach a wider audience and hopefully get a useful setup to achieve a success.

I have no idea, the person that said that is likely very immature. There are young and ignorant people in any game, regardless of race or nationality.

Huge opposition to RMT. The problem is that 1% of the population ruins it for the rest of us 99%. So when a bad player is caught doing RMT, it makes us all look bad. Some third party tools seem to be used by almost every NA player, which is Windower. It has lots of useful tools that supposedly don't change the game, just the user interface. I personally wished all RMT would die in a fire

I think subligar is really gross, especially on males. A lot of NA friends I know think the same, and really don't understand why its so widely used in this game. As for equipment that is especially popular, probably goldsmithing shades, beastmen hats, or any gear that just looks really cool.

I sometimes take invites to replace someone but always know that it could just end up disbanding as soon as I get there. But usually only if I don't have a lot of time to play anyway. If it does happen as long as I get at least an hour of EXP or manage to use up an exp band charge ill go away happy. If not, well, then it does get pretty annoying.

Never, ever come across such a list myself. Except for possibly list's of high level crafters.

Since I started playing with the European release (from Wales, part of the UK) there always seemed to be this "myth" so to speak that the Japanese players were always better than anyone else. But over time I have come to learn that no matter what country any player is from you will always have some who are exceptional and some who are just useless. Im not the sort of person to make parties but thanks to the hours I play I have probably been in more parties where the other 5 players Japanese than anything else.

I think most people just use it as a shortcut instead of typing things out in full more than targeting everyone. If I see someone shouting I'll usually reply using Auto-Translate, beacuse unless I already know them I won't have any idea what language they speak either since it could even be French or German now as well.

Only new players I tend to see would people that I already play getting they friends or partners to play as well. I think the rate that new players are joing has deffinetly slowed right down to very few though.

Paying RL money for Gil is just a total waste of cash, though I can understand why people do it. As for Third Party tools, the "unoffical Windower" has become an almost essential part of being to play all day and still get use from my PC. I simply could not play without it. As for other tools such as fishing bots/claim bots/etc... im totally against them. It just takes a lot of the fun out it. I used them in a previous MMO (Ultima Online) and basically it just killed the fun factor for me and I would imagine those around me.

1) I've had that happen a few times. I don't worry about it. I know how stressful it can be trying to get replacements to keep a party going, and really feel bad when I invite someone only to have to turn around and tell them not to come since everyone decided it was 'bedtime' or something.

2) I haven't come across it if it exists.

3) When inviting people, I look at job first and language second. As long as they're a competent player, I'm happy to party with them. I will ask if the JP player is ok with an English party, though, as I'll often have a few people from my LS in the party as well.

4) Not anything that I can recall.

5) Auto-translate means yes, I'd be happy to include JP players (or Spanish/French/German-speaking EU players for that matter). If I wasn't interested in dealing with people speaking other languages then I'd use strictly English.

6) Um.. I don't hate you. There are parts of Japanese culture that I find fascinating and love, and parts of Japanese culture that I find mystifying and irritating. But ultimately I'm just interested in getting along.

7) There are some, but it seems to be at a pretty low rate.

9) There is very vocal opposition to RMT, at least on the forums I frequent. While there is also strong opposition to botters, that appears to be less vociferous (or at least with respect to how many endgame shells appear to make use of them). If 'third party tools' includes the Windower, most people appear inclined to think that it's OK, though some gripe about some of the plugins available.

10) Subligar fans have their niche here as well. I'm reminded of a thread called "The Legend of the Subligar Man". Beyond that, anything a Mithra is wearing (or not wearing) is fairly popular.

I'm Australian, but as there is no Australian community, I'll consider my community NA (although I've been in both a NA and a JP HNM linkshell for >3years...). I'm on Quetzalcoatl.

1. Sure, I've been asked to go to a party as a replacement, and when I get there they've found someone else. I've signed up for a Mission, organised a tank when they didn't have one, and then when it was time to start, was no longer required. I've helped with missions I didn't need, and then when we got to missions I did need, they've gone without me. I wouldn't say I hold a grudge, but I would be less likely to go out of my way to help those people again.

3. Communication can be a problem, but JP players generally understand their role in a party, so not a lot of communication is usually necessary.

4. Being invited to a party, and then when I respond in autotranslate, being told the invite was a mistake (especially when I'm clearly the job and level that the person inviting needs). I put in my search comment that I can't speak Japanese but that JP or NA parties are fine. It happens fairly frequently.

5. Yes, If I'm using Autotranslate, it's because I want the whole population to understand what I'm saying.

6. Most NA don't hate JP, (although some do). Using a NA client game the game isn't obviously JP, and a lot of NA love the previous Final Fantasy games, so want to play Final Fantasy XI as well).

7. Not a lot of new NA people, I don't think. From playing in both timezones, I would have guessed that the JP population is fairly steady, while the NA population is slowly dropping.

8. I haven't seen this very much on Quetz. Most of our NA HNM shells contain both NA and JP members. Most of the players that are prejudiced to JP in general are new to endgame rather than the players with many 75 jobs and very good gear.

9. There is a lot of opposition to RMT. Opposition to 3rd Party Tools varies. Windower (and plugins) is almost universally accepted. Some LSs allow Claimbotting, Position Hacks, and repetition bots (fishbots), while many do not. Gil farmers are mostly disliked.

Here's an explanation of what this means:
In middle school they have school trips, just like most of us do. They are allowed to bring a bento (lunchbox meal) along with them. The bento is made at home and includes a sandwich, fish, rice, veggies... some combination of those things.

Students are also allowed to bring snacks, but there is a limit (usually 300 yen) set on the amount of snacks they can bring, since those are desserts, candies, etc. A banana, being a fruit, remains on the fence between lunch and dessert, and gave rise to this running gag. Is a banana part of lunch, or must it be included in snacks, which have a price limit?

It's nothing to think too deeply about, but feel free to give your opinion on the matter.

Around here it wouldn't get counted as desert, since we consider snacks to be candy bars , chips , and the sort.

Yes. The one that I remember, I was leveling summoner, and was invited to a new party. We decided on a camp, so I refreshed sanction, used the runic portal, and went to camp. When there were 4 of us there (except for the leader and his friend) I was kicked because a bard started lfg. I held a grudge for a while, but I've since forgotten the name of the person.

Some forums that include subforums for each server have had "good player" threads, but its never been specific to whether that player is JP or NA or EU.

Often, the invite is because the player is a key job, such as a healer. Sometimes, its because the leader believes that Japanese players are more skilled. I tend to invite people who list English as their language first, simply for easier communication. If someone lists JP Only or {English} {No Thanks} I try to avoid inviting them.

For the short activities that are most commonly repeated, such as Under Observation or Lamia 13, it is more or less assumed that everyone knows what to do, so it is open. For more complicated quests or missions, I assume that those Japanese players who are more confident with their English might join, while those who believe that they will struggle with communicating a strategy will wait for a Japanese group.

The opinions of people widely vary. Those who assume that everyone in a single group are one way or another, whether saying that they hate Japanese or that Japanese are much better than Americans tend to be looked down upon. The most common opinion is that no matter which nationality, there's good players and bad players, polite players and rude players, etc.

Most of the subligar fanatics that I see are Elvaan male or Galka. Those red glasses pretty commonly worn for town gear, though I prefer my clothcraft spectacles.
