If I end up being wrong I'll prolly have to change this thread title, but the UFC is set to hold a press conference in a little under an hour, and the rumbling is that it will be Dana White announcing that Randy Couture has agreed to a new contract, and will be set to fight Brock Lesnar come November.

The already scheduled fight between current Interim champion Antonio Rodrigo Nogueira and Frank Mir will now be a #1 contenders match.

cool fight but i dont know how i feel about it. if randy loses then a future fight with fedor loses a lot of steam. if brock loses i would think that could be kind of damaging to his future. granted he dominated herring, a second loss in three fights especially to such a big name this early in a career could do a lot of harm. i really dont want to see brock turn into kimbo and get fed nothing but garbage so that the UFC can continue to make money off him.

I really don't think anyone can argue this point, but UFC is a business at the end of the day, and putting Lesnar (who is a huge draw with only 3 fights under his belt) in a match this big will net them a huge buyrate. Dana White said he is expecting to draw 1 million + PPV buys from this main event alone.

I'm not downplaying Couture, but he's never been a draw in terms of PPV numbers to the degree Lesnar is.

I think basically what happened is that Randy wanted to fight fairly soon, and his opponent ended up being Lesnar for not only business reasons, but also practical ones. The only other significant contender aside from Nog/Mir(Who are obviously already tied up with TUF season 8 ) is really Werdum, and he's already scheduled for a fight at UFC 90. Assuming he wins this fight they are obligated to give him a title fight(It's in his contract). With him tied up, Lesnar is a fairly natural choice, as well as it being a great business move. Not only does this give them a huge fight in Lesnar vs Couture, it also helps in hyping up Nog/Mir even more, as well as the subsequent final of their "heavyweight tournament". Then once that is over, they have another quality title fight lined up with Werdum, and they've managed to stretch a rather thin heavyweight division quite far.

Even if Lesnar does take Randy's belt, he still has to face the winner of Nog/Mir to become the undisputed champion.
