There aren't many worthy heavyweight fighters not already signed and training for a fight anyway.

Fair enough on why Kongo isn't getting a shot, I'd forgotten about his fight with Herring. I'm not so much arguing the fact that he's a top 5, he's definitely up there, as I am stating that he's getting a shot at the title based more on popularity than on anything else. He'd definitely get one eventually, of that I am sure. But right now he's had two fights in the UFC and he's already fighting Couture.
Ok... Couture needs to fight SOMEONE.... who would you choose? But right now he's had two fights in the UFC and he's already fighting Couture.
Mir/Nog are out of the question. Herring lost to Lesnar, Congo lost to Herring.
Werdum beat Vera I guess you could make a case for him... but he has a whopping 1 more UFC fight than Lesnar.
Gabriel Gonzaga....No
The UFC doesn't have any option here IMO, since Couture needs to fight soon. If they had all the time in the world they could hold off on any of Couture's fights until the Mir/Nog shit is resolved, or Werdum fights Lesnar or Lesnar fights Congo.
Isn't Werdum already tied up with a fight in the next few months?
UFCs heavyweight division is shallow to begin with, and with most of the better fighters already commited to other fights in this time frame, Lesnar is the best choice
Werdum was given an easy fight in order to keep busy as he was essentially set to fight the winner of nog/mir. Not really sure what will happen to him now though.
First off, it's good to see that BG is finally getting an MMA following (or just UFC, lol).
Obviously Brock doesn't deserve a shot at this point and time, but right now it's all about the money fight (Brock has his first win, Couture is finally back after a year) so now's the time to make this happen. No point in waiting in case Brock loses again or if Randy loses his title with a poor showing, then there's no appeal to this fight. I'm actually glad they're doing this now instead of waiting (kind of like the Chuck VS Wandy fight that should have happened when they were both champs).
Now, for my predictions, I'm sad to say that Brock is going to win. My reasoning for this is purely size and strength. Brock Lesnar cuts from 300-290 pounds. Randy cuts from... Well, he doesn't actually cut, and he'll probably weigh in anywhere from 230-220 pounds, depending on how he's training (the harder the training, the lighter he'll weigh in). Brock also has more than 14 years on Randy, strength, athletics (Brock has the 2nd highest vertical in the UFC aside from GSP), speed, among other things. I don't know how many of you have trained jiu jitsu, but if you have, you'll know that it's very tough to submit someone that out strengths you by twofold. I cannot see Randy having the combination of strength and skill like Mir has (Mir is a BJJ blackbelt and is also a big 265er) to submit Lesnar. In my opinion, the only way Randy will win is if Lesnar has a glass chin, because he won't be stuffing his takedowns.
Right now, I believe that Lesnar is +110 on betting sites (so he isn't the favorite). It'd be a smart bet to place money on Lesnar. As of right now, only people I see beating Lesnar are Werdum and Nog (I think he beats Mir in a rematch, as Mir's BJJ has never been *that* great).
Not sure if anyone mentioned this but what ever happen to mirko cro-cop, I know he got owned by gonzaga but he hasnt fought since, he is a quality heavyweight, I enjoyed watching him in pride. There is also an up and coming black dude forget his name that is a beast, soemthin anderson i think.
Mirko left the UFC to fight in a new organization calle "DREAM". His last fight (which is also his first after leaving the UFC) which was against some bum with a record of like 3-2 (he's actually just a Japanese prowrestler who sucks). Mirko said he would one day be back to avenge his UFC record, but I highly doubt it. Also, Anderson "The Spider" Silva is fighting at UFC 90 I think against Patrick "The Predator" Cote. Silva is on a 7 fight win streak and is seemingly unbeatable.
Yeah anderson silva is alot of fun to watch, I doubt he is going to loose that title anytime soon. I guess mirko was embarrased, but man he shoulda stayed, UFC is much more competitive and financialy better.
Couture said he was going to be trying to put on weight (I think he said 30 lbs, which boggles my mind if he plans to put on that much muscle mass in just 2 months) before the fight to try match up to Lesnar's overwhelming size advantage.
Cro-Cop lost 2 fights in a row in UFC then quit.
He lost to lolGabriel Gonzaga, and he lost to Cheik (Sp?) Congo, then he quit lol.
He said he left b/c he couldn't get comfortable fighting in a Cage, as opposed to the Ring-Style he was used too.... and that he much rather preferred to fight in Japan.
Mirko Cro-Cop is fighting Alistair Overeem at DREAM 6 on the 23rd. DREAM airs on HDNet in the US, definitely worth watching if you get the chance. Basically a continuation of Pride in some ways. The conclusion to their Middleweight Grand Prix is also set for DREAM 6 so it should be a great event.
As for who wins Couture vs Lesnar...after all the times I've doubted Couture and he's pulled it off, I just can't bring myself to bet against him in this fight. Brock obviously has a massive physical advantage, but there's definitely holes in his game, and I have faith in Randy being able to exploit those. I don't think Randy can beat Nog if that fight comes to fruition though.
i dont know a lot about the wrestling aspect of MMA but i would think that Randy's greco roman has to help his odds.
It's looking very likely that UFC 91 will have a second superfight with Rampage vs Wanderlei. Florian vs stevenson is also supposed to be on that card. I wonder if the UFC will try to add another huge fight.
Normally it would help him, but Lesnar also has an extensive background in wresting, and I'm not talking WWE. He's won a championship at the NCAA level, which is nothing to scoff at. I'm not going to say Lesnar deserves this shot or not. But the heavyweight division in the UFC is alarmingly thin. So there aren't too many serious contenders. It makes sense financially for the UFC to make this fight.i dont know a lot about the wrestling aspect of MMA but i would think that Randy's greco roman has to help his odds.
Lesnar and Couture have fairly similar wrestling backgrounds, but when it comes to MMA Lesnar obviously has his freakishly huge size/strength that affects how he fights.
I read that apparently that first punch he threw at Herring ended up breaking his Orbital bone, and Herring is out for 6 months now.
In all the years of fighting I've been watching, I had never seen anyone get hit like that. Herring was like a tumbleweed. But back to the topic. The wrestling aspect, to me, is a complete wash. They both have extensive knowledge in that field. Couture has the experience. Lesnar has the freakish size.
And let's face it, the second the round starts Lesnar is going to bull rush him. If Couture can safely get through that first few second onslaught, it will be extremely interesting to watch. Given all the fights Lesnar has participated in they all have the same thing in common. He tries to establish dominance right at the opening bell.
