I live in metro-detroit, but they are kept in a fireproof gunsafe, and I would like to donate them, so I shouldn't have them for long, but I want to know who these people were before i donate them.

Have any names of museums or email addresses, because I would be extremely interested in donating I feel bad, because they were in a basement for years and years, and now I have them, but I don't think it would do these people justice, that apparently killed themselves for their country, to be hanging in my room. The story should be known, if this is how it actually happened.

Those are chinese characters, and they don't seem to be Kanji. I can make out people and city names (tokyo, osaka, etc) on that cloth resembled a flag.

Hmm, if you're a college student, maybe take them to a Chinese or Japanese prof. I'm 4th year Japanese... but I don't recognize any of those compounds (then again I do suck at JP). Professors might not know either though, probably need a professional who studies the ancient scripts. Still, very cool...

EDIT: Actually they are probably mostly in between versions of current used Kanji and typical Chinese characters.

Those are chinese characters, and they don't seem to be Kanji. I can make out people and city names (tokyo, osaka, etc) on that cloth resembled a flag.

Defiantly not Chinese, the flag was made, this was a pillowcase cut in half, you can actually see cut marks on the side, and the red paint (As you can see, on the large flag) is sort of wearing off. These were homemade flags, they were not given the right to own japanese flags while in prison, so they made them, and killed themselfs. The only reason I know this story is because I personally know the guard that witnessed it.

Just found out japanese did adapt some simplified chinese after WWII, so they are kanji if you so insist that they are japanese. It's surprising that no hiragana (genuine japanese character) is used at all on the flag.

Eh, I sent them to my Japanese professor in hopes she can do something with them. I find it very hard to believe Chinese would make a Japanese flag.

It may very well be japanese since most names (people, cities) are written in kanji, chinese characters.

The Japanese language and earlly Japan took on a huge influence from the Chinese, most older generations of Japanese know how to write old style Japanese, and that's basically Chinese.

If it was something like that, im sure you could have tons of people swarm to you for free to try and translate it. Just gotta get in contact with the right people.
