So I got the cracked copy over the weekend and I've pretty much been spending all my gaming time with it lately. The space phase is by far the most interesting, but it does get repetitive very quickly. I'm probably going to play my current species out to the end where I get to the centre of the galaxy or whatever and then just uninstall it.

This is pretty much the relationship I have with most Maxis games: Intense interest and play in the first week or two, then I lose all interest and then will maybe play it once every few weeks for an hour and realize that it's the same thing over again.

The casual nature of the game is completely what killed it to me. If in a year's time they release an "Elite" version of Spore that goes in to much more detail with the different gaming modes I might be interested, maybe.

not surprised at all... not justifying EA, but anybody can bring a class action law suit against the company. Now, if they win, I will be impressed.... but it won't be a fast lawsuit, prolly take em years unless EA just wanst to settle it out quickly

either way, with news of a them "secretly installing undeletable programs" onto your computer, it will hurt sales of Spore and future sales.

I'm in semi agreeance with you here. However as a big Maxis sim game fan , this is their most repetetive title. I played sims1 through all the expansions too, there were hundreds of possibilities to have with your sims interacting with each other, hell even in vanilla no expansion installation it's still all there. With spore however, it's just.. you get to space and get bored. I was happy the first week and thought it'd be just like with sims where it'll tone down but still be fun, but the fact remains there's only oh so much that happens with space missions :
1 - befriend / make enemy with colony
2 - Befriend to the point their system is available for purchase / Threat till you nuke them
3 - Help them eliminate a diseased species
4 - Help them fix planets to become inhabitable
5 - Save your planet / allies planets from invasion


5 happens too often and is very annoying. I'm very against the SecuROM thing too, I hope they win and EA will be forced to release a tool to remove it from existance.

I purchased this game on launch and I'm dissapointed with it. Ignoring the DRM issues, the game itself really isn't very good. There's no content at all, the game is just an editor. This would be the second game that I've ever purchased and felt like I actually want a refund, the first being Gauntlet: Seven Sorrows.

Anyone know of a place that keeps track of all games that come with DRM like this?

Sometimes I like to impulsively buy games without doing much research on them, but sounds like this could get me in trouble if more games start following this track. For now I'll just start avoiding EA games but some place that tracks all of them would be useful.

its a great game for the first few hours, then i beat it and i was totally happy with it, but its just... so short =(

Is there any real benefit to getting the top rank in the space stage or getting to the centre of the galaxy through the Grox? That's about all I have left, since in my local cluster I have befriended and allied with every species I can and wiped out all my enemies, so there's not much to do at home.

Getting top rank just gets you an Achievement based on whatever philosophy your space race is. You also get more stuff to buy, but that's just from the badges you unlock getting to the top rank.

Getting to the center of the galaxy gets you a little cutscene with a guy who lives there, and he gives you the Staff of Life, and item with 42 uses that automatically terraforms a planet up to T3 and fills in its ecosystem. The guy in the center then tells you to go find Earth.

So I made it to the centre of the galaxy, which was a neat little sequence. I really liked the homage to the alien invasion craft featured in SimCity 2000 as the herald of whomever was at the galactic core. Unfortunately, I never got that item that automatically warps you back to your home planet in this particular game (probably because I cheated to get all the planet design and painting tools) so I just saved my game at the core and promptly uninstalled the game.

Was a fun romp, but it's an ultimately shallow pool for any kind of serious gamer.
