DRK is great too, Stun and an extra Sleep i find generally more useful than WAR.
/SAM makes easy floors much easier, but /NIN makes troublesome floors less of a problem.
my usual group is
DRK SAM* MNK DRG BRD* WHM
*relics
It's pretty much like others summed up above - luck.
But there are a couple of things you can do to speed things up in your favour.
First, use Vent, Teamspeak or other form of near-instant communication. Not everyone needs to speak on it but if everyone can listen it's already a huge help. The less you need to have people loitering around while you type directions and the more time you can spend actually doing stuff the faster you'll move through. Have a designated person/leader ready to call lamp orders/what direction to go instead of everyone talking over each other.
Second is experience and that will only come to you with time. When you have a group where everyone knows how lamps work, what all the different messages mean (there are people who can't grasp the simple concept of "Do not destroy gears") and so forth only comes with experience. Stick with it, I've been lucky enough to be able to go with groups who have already learnt all this and have shown me. If your crew needs to learn from scratch then so be it and allow time for it. It will probably mean few more failed runs than a more experienced group would have but everyone needs to start somewhere. Remember that you can't win every time and like the lovely examples above point out magic restrictions and other crap there's nothing you can do about it.
Third is //fillmode 0 and //fillmode 1 although use with discretion... it can be more trouble than it's worth sometimes when you end up humping walls at dead ends.
As Vig said, the best thing you can do for Nyzul is get Vent. Being able to communicate instantly is invaluable.
BLU is amazing in Nyzul. My setup is:
BLU BLU THF RDM BRD DRG
On all enemies floors the 2 BLUs seperate and the DRG THF BRD and RDM seperate. Disseverment basically 1 shots any Puk/Leech/Imp/Bird/Raptor[Insert EP-DC mob]
head butt and diamond hide are awsome on boss floors.
My Nyzul static goes: SAM/WAR x2, RNG/NIN, THF/NIN, BRD/WHM, and WHM/SMN. It works really well for us and bosses aren't too bad with Fanatic's. We've gotten 2 members' discs to 100, and everyone else in the static is 20+ on his/her's. Like everyone else, we have our share of ups and downs, but we work well as a team and communicate well. There are some mobs and restrictions that just seem to ruin a great run if not careful...
We go with:
WHM/SMN (he's leveling /SCH eventually, LS leaders are busy)
BRD/WHM (yayfife)
WAR/NIN
SAM/WAR
MNK/NIN
DRK/SAM for climbing, THF/NIN for bosses (but full Homam, etc. so still useful for getting there).
Communication and people understanding shit/paying attention/not screwing around is really what will make you win. We tend to buy Fanatic's and a wing for bosses; probably don't really need the wing. We haven't done a 10 floor run yet, just a few 7s, but we rarely fail either (only have done so with 5, but we've also done 7 floors with 5); I'm pretty happy with it. Gotten almost all of the bodies we want, and many of the things under that, so it's almost head time for us. We only go 2x a week since we all do a lot of Salvage.
DNC is actually awesome in Nyzul. While not our normal setup (most of the time we go rdm brd ddx4) we take DNC if our BRD can't make it. DNC is very useful because of the gravity move, drain samba, the stun move, and healing waltzes. We even got unlucky enough to have a floor 80 with white magic restricted and Cerb where our DNC solo healed the whole fight.
This made me laugh because we never take a RDM lol...RDM almost always mandatory for boss fights
We go with:
WAR
WAR
BRD (Fife)
WHM/SCH
BLM
BLU
I usually BRD (have fife) but sometimes WHM/SCH. We have a guy who usually WHM/SCHs for us who can main/sub BLU if our BLU can't make it. JOb flexibility is win.
BLM is nice for some mobs to sleep, awesome for puddings but we could prolly live without. We may switch our standard setup for 60. We don't bother with a main tank.
Jobs we have
Me: WHM, BLM, SMN, SCH, BRD
#2: BLM, WHM, BLU, SMN
#3: BLU, DRK, NIN
#4: WAR, RNG, PLD
#5: WAR, NIN, RNG
#6: BLM, SAM, RDM
We may switch the BLM for SAM but we like have light and dark based sleep. We don't see the need for him to RDM, if he's going to come with black magic, would rather he could do more damage. We just got a lot of custards... so we like our BLM for now. Higher, it might not be enough, especially with a BLU.
We use a BRD to pull. I buff the mages at the start of a floor, run off, pull and buff melee as they start on a couple of slept floors. For Bosses, when you're running out of time, SV is win.
If we need more damage higher up (only saved to 41 right now as we're farming each boss level for everyone's key drops) we may switch the BLM or drop a BLU in favour of a WHM/BLU.
BRD + BLU can easily keep floor 20 and 40 parties alive through boss fights.
BRD is good in Nyzul, Finale and Lullaby are very useful (flayers, skels). Getting songs on the right people at the right time takes some getting used to, but Pianissimo can be helpful. A -casting time body is very nice to have since the pace is fast.
BST can be useful, but nothing in there is charmable. Pets can also give a ton of TP to mobs that have nasty TP moves, and this can be a Bad Thing.
We've used lots of different setups, and normally go either NIN THF SAM BLU RDM BRD, or DD DD THF RDM WHM/SCH BRD. Party setup can be flexible, but you need some nice damage for bosses.
The most important thing is experience - Nyzul has a learning curve and you just gotta climb that curve. Once you do, it gets a ton easier.
I go COR/NIN to all my Nyzul runs. Works very well. Our setups are:
farm: BLU BLU WHM MNK BLM COR
boss: BLU BLU WHM THF BLM COR
Just have to be sure to keep mages refreshed and rolls on the DD's, but with my gear I can DD and solo most of the mobs on "kill all" floors by myself if needed.
That's a good point, Dnc would help with White Magic Restricted.
After climbing 2 discs to 81 and 1 disc to 60.. I have seen the white magic restriction a grand total of 3 times.
2x on a kill all floor.
1x on a floor 60 hydra.
With enough firepower it isn't an issue. Unless you had that restriction on something extra nasty like chariots/frogs/flayers.
We normally go with:
RDM/WHM
BRD/WHM
SAM/WAR
WAR/NIN
WAR/SAM
THF/NIN
The more damage we do.. the easier everything seems. Killing bosses before they wing/fire spit/aoe para/stoneskin/etc all our healer's MP away works the best for us.
Here's my 2 gil
Basically any 1 healer, 1 BRD, 4 melee PT will be successful with some practice.
Our setup is generally somehting like: WHM/SCH, BRD, THF, SAM, BLU, BLUorSAMorNIN
As far as the healer is concerned we only ever use WHM because, well our WHM is pro (he has SCH too but prefers WHM), but a good RDM will perform just as well.
Comparing our group's performance before and after our BRD got a storm fife is no contest...
We used to bring a BLM because that was the only DD job that individual had (until she finished NIN), its decent but far too MP dependent (to be fair, havent tried since we got the fife tho). However, if you ever get 10x pudding floors or an adamatoise boss with little time remaining you'll be happy you have them. But as stated above that's not something that cant be handled with a melee onry group either.
As far as melee DDs are concerned we've had great success with BLU for clearing trash mobs (grab 2 juices, use one right away save the other and mp isnt a problem) and SAM for zerging bosses (fanatics is key). Basically, any high survivability + high damage output job is nice, not unlike a meripo.
Also, what people are saying about randomness is very true so don't get discoraged at first if you fail miserably. I recall a lv100 Hydra with locked whitemagic spamming physicall shield like 6 times in a row... That SUCKED!
My group is:
SMN/WHM
BRD/WHM
DRG/WHM
PLD/NIN
MNK/NIN (changes to THF on boss runs)
random DD
I have to agree with some of the other posters - experience is really key. We struggled a lot in the beginning and I never thought we would beat a floor 80 or 100 boss with our setup. But we kept at it and made adjustments here and there with our strategy and found out what works best for us. As your group gets comfortable with the mechanics of Nyzul, you can make adjustments as you see fit but my best advice is to just dive in and have fun. And yes, you can win floor 100 with a standard non-tp burn party. ^^
Oh, also, don't underestimate the power of meds on boss floors - at minimum HP Boost and Fanatic's Drink. Both have been lifesavers on our runs. Check any treasure chests that pop from regular mobs too, sometimes that dusty elixir (or whatever is in the chest) will save a precious minute or two and is invaluable in a tight situation.
My group:
PLD/NIN
RDM/WHM
BRD/WHM
BLM/RDM
WAR/SAM
THF/NIN
Sometimes the melees switch things up a little bit, but 99% of the time that's what it looks like. I think communication is extremely important, and regardless of what works for your group, keep track of which direction you're going off in. Nothing's worse than going "hey guys, I found [whatever]" and then be stuck for 5-10 minutes because someone got lost on a huge floor. -.-
Question for those of you who've done Nyzul to the upper floors -- would a COR be a sufficient substitute for a BRD? Some friends and I are looking to restart our static, but the one person who has bard REALLY doesn't like playing it. So our setup would look something like:
WAR SAM SAM RDM SCH COR
WAR SAM SAM SAM COR WHM
or something close to that, at least.
COR possesses light-based sleep, but not in AoE form, and I'm wondering whether or not the buffs are comparable. (Haven't endgamed with too many CORs, so I'm just looking for opinions on whether or not it will be feasible, or if we'll have to start looking for BRD)
