That and random psychotic guy is a bit easier to exist in a "real" universe than villains with superpowers.

The article has an update saying PSH stated he'd never even been approached about it. So I dunno.

Personally, I'd at least like them to stick to one major villain instead of trying to make things bigger with multiple. Not sure the Penguin would even work too well in the overall world that Nolan has made.

Riddler isn't really twisted though, he's actually the nicest villain Batman has(he's never killed anyone). I guess they could remake him though.

As long as Nolan is directing, I feel confident about his ability to steer the franchise in the right direction. PSH as Penguin seems fine, Depp as Riddler seems kinda too ridiculous and not "dark", but again, Nolan should be able to make it work.

Also I still consider this a long-standing rumor, something someone said at some film festival isn't solid evidence for me.

And I think boasting about "topping" Heath as Joker is a bit tasteless honestly, both considering that he was absolutely fantastic and they're basically saying "we can do better than that dead guy".

If they do go with the Riddler, I hope they poach some of the premise from Hush where he figures out Batman's identity, but "can't" tell anyone because it would make the question/riddle of "Who is the Batman?" worthless, and in his riddle obsessed brain he would never allow that to happen.

It's going to be really hard to top the Joker regardless of Heath's amazing performance... the Joker's pretty much the top tier of Batman's rogue gallery. He is the anti-Batman. No matter who else you pick, the same level of threat just isn't going to be there.

I can definitely see the Penguin or the Riddler being done cleverly and fitting well into Nolan's Batman universe, but they just don't scare me, and moreover, I dont think either of them should be forced into an "outdo the Joker" mold anyway. Two-Face as a main villain (surprise, not dead?), and one or both of them as secondary, maybe... It's really unfortunate, for many reasons, the way things happened... Heath's Joker + a couple well known villains would have ramped things up just fine.

I doubt we would see Two-Face (if we are to assume he didn't die, which I think is the case) and Riddler in the same movie, since we already saw that in Batman Forever.

That's true. I'd forgotten, but I think I tend to block out that movie (as should we ALL).

Also yeah. There were some things i didn't like about Hush, but the bit about the Riddler was gold.

At this point I'd be more worried over the quality of the [prolly] unwritten script vs Depp being able to do a good job as the Riddler. So many sequels are rushed out the door while the first movie is still hot on ppl's minds, and, even if all the actors are retained, if the script sucks then it doesn't matter how good of a job they do w/ their role

Well to be fair, they did start the Nolan franchise with Ra's Al Ghul and the Scarecrow. The Joker is the iconic Batman villain so that makes sense as well, whereas Two Face has one of the more compelling stories. The Nolan franchise seems to be trying to keep the series grounded as close to reality as well which makes some of the more compelling villains (Clayface, Killer Croc, Mr. Freeze, etc) a bit more of a stretch. I think Jarvis Tetch might have been a good one to see in the Nolan universe though.

Doing the Hush storyline wouldn't work. I like Hush as a character though. The story requires a lot of backstory though and we've already seen Bruce's formative years. To introduce another childhood blah blah blah will be very tacky.

I think Depp is talented and blah blah, but he's made a lot of safe choices (for him). To most people those choices would be very alien. His best movie IMO was The Libertine, because he actually showed some emotional depth. Usually he's either campy/eccentric/macabre.

That's just being picky though and looking at it in a technical way. He's great and most of his movies (definitely anything he's done this decade) are very entertaining.

I actually hate the idea of him being in a Nolan Batflick because he's so popular and I don't want it to be a 'Johnny Depp' movie. I like how these films launched Bale's career and brought Heath to a more mainstream audience (he was still well-known, albeit as one of the guys in the 'gay cowboy movie'). Gary Oldman's career has been revitalized as well. He's used to playing psychotics and Nolan actually saw that he could play a good guy for once (Oldman himself said this too).

Soooo would be nice to see who else Nolan could nurture/'discover' or re-discover in a way. But when I think about Riddler from The Long Halloween, Depp definitely comes to mind. I see him being very 'wormy' like Wormtongue from the LoTR movies (in the way the guy who played him).

In Halloween, Riddler seems very emasculated and weak so that's probably not a good place to base the bulk of the characterization on. Hush works. I'm thinking he'd be similar to Kevin Spacey in Seven but neurotic and more sinewy if that makes sense.

I called Depp as the Riddler almost immediately when I heard the Riddler rumor when the DRK came out.

    Damn I'm good.

I can def. see Depp playing the riddler (favorite movie from his is Secret Window). Hoffman playing the penguin would be interesting to see as well. Bale+Depp+Batman movie= Epic Awsome!

PSH, at least, is not the Penguin.

In addition, iirc, Nolan said the Penguin character was too "goofy" for his universe anyway.

He's dead, Aaron Eckhart himself already told SHH/ComingSoon.net

    "CS/SHH!: Is Harvey Dent alive?
Aaron Eckhart: No. He is dead as a door nail.

CS/SHH!: So he's not coming back?
Eckhart: He ain't coming back baby!

CS/SHH!: I was hoping he would.
Eckhart: No. I asked Chris [Nolan] that question and he goes, "You're dead" before I could even get the question out of my mouth. "Hey Chris, am I?" "You're dead!" Alright, cool.""

    Source: http://www.superherohype.com/news/fe...ws.php?id=7641

Which was pretty disappointing news to me, since I loved how well Eckhart performed in TDK. If anyone could top Heath's Joker, it's Depp's Riddler.

He worked in R&D for wayne enterprises. Bruce rejected his inventions for being too "out there" and that basically gave the riddler a grudge. He ended up killing his supervisor which put him over the edge.
