It takes a long time to cool an object to arbitrarily low temperatures. Which increases rapidly as you increase the size of the object being cooled.

You need to pump the heat away efficiently, and this requires a large exertion of energy. As the magnets are not only large, and powerful, but finely tuned instruments, this adds in the complication of being careful as you cool them, to make sure it is as uniform of a process as is possible.

I hope this doesn't turn into another SSC, that was one of the things that jaded me to government as a child.

So the majority of the 2 months will go into cooling and tuning the magnets back to where they need to be and not so much the removing and reinstalling?

The SSC is the superconducting supercolider. It was an LHC type project the US was building in texas, but was eventually canceled in 1993. If it would have been completed, it would have been the biggest and most powerful particle accelerator on Earth (triple the power of the LHC).

The SSC dying made me very sad, I was in Texas, and in elementary school reading about it, and then they cut the project.

There is a certain amount of difficulty in removing and replacing naturally, but it doesn't compare to the difficulty of cooling something by a large amount without risking the possibility of damaging it, due to improper or uneven cooling causing stress on the material.

I just read the wiki page on the SSC and that thing was going to be massive. Like 4x the circumference of the LHC. How much closer to light speed would that have gotten the beam of magic. Or would it be less about more speed and more so about more matter being fired around.

It would have been about the energy piled into the beam, the fractional velocity increases don't really describe well the way the energy ramps up with each one.

The difference in velocity would have been minimal since both accelerators bring particles to nearly light speed. However, due to momentum dilation, small changes in speed are equal to large changes in energy at relativistic scales. As a result, as Max pointed out, it's better to look at accelerators in terms of energy instead of speed.

I heard their accident pushed them back into early 2009 for doing the really fun stuff. Has that since been changed? As far as I knew, they still haven't done anything serious yet.
