You need to pump the heat away efficiently, and this requires a large exertion of energy. As the magnets are not only large, and powerful, but finely tuned instruments, this adds in the complication of being careful as you cool them, to make sure it is as uniform of a process as is possible.
I hope this doesn't turn into another SSC, that was one of the things that jaded me to government as a child.
