Cosmic rays hitting the Earth's atmosphere and what's goes on in a particle accelerator are totally different things.

That being said, it takes all of like 3-4 minutes of researching Black holes to understand that even if this thing did generate black holes (it won't), that they would evaporate in about 1/1000th of a second and that would be the end of it.

But overall people are always looking towards the end of the world as they see it a way to test their faith/dedication to any religion. Not to mention, when do religions get the best conversions? Thats right, when people think they are going to die.

So really I just see this as the usual "end of the world, by some nameless device" theme thats been going on for thousands of years and will probably not happen in my lifetime.
Any reason why you had to attack Christianity, when the entire population of India (which is largely not Christian) is freaking out as well?

And even if Christianity "started" as an apocalyptic cult (which it didn't if you actually know about the religious message of the religion) that's not how it's being embraced today so your attacks are baseless.

Because religion is at once archaic, a crutch and a hobble, and it has no place in the modern world.

Why is it that all of the atheists on this website sound like zealots?

Because they feel empowered trashing a religion thinking their stubborn tone makes them sound intellectually superior but honestly it's stupid because a majority of the forum are atheists anyway, so they just come off looking like a douche.

I find it sorta funny that usually people complain about how relgion being pushed on them is annoying, but here it's like everyone is pushing atheism on you.

You surprise me with your lack of knowledge about the origins of Christianity.
Also thats a pretty bold claim that you know the "religious message behind the religion" as you put it. I made no claims about comprehending the complex mysteries of Christianity, I simply stated that its origins were those of an apocalyptic cult which in fact they were. And no general mainstream Christianity isn't an apocalyptic cult anymore, however it still holds beliefs about when the end of time and lots of groups try to predict when the end will come and preach about it.

Check out this book, Longing for the End: The History of Millenialism in Western Civilization (http://books.google.com/books?id=tlTmCjTDCs8C) if you don't believe me. It has a lot of good sources and citations. The book's intro also makes mentions of many other religions with apocalyptic origins . But you should read the preview to Chapter 2: The Jesus Cult. Its got a very well thought out claim. However, in case you choose to ignore that suggestion and don't bother reading I'll share a little except from it and also Paul's Scriptures to the Thessalonians.

"For the Lord Himself will come down from heaven, with a loud command, with the voice of the archangel and with the trumpet call of God, and the dead in Christ will rise first. After that, we who are still alive and are left will be caught up together with them in the clouds to meet the Lord in the air. And so we will be with the Lord forever"

Sounds like the rapture/apocalypse/whatever you want to call it. The book continues discussing that Paul firmly believed the end of time would occur in his lifetime, it didn't, so Christianity eventually had to adapt its perspectives that the End wasn't Near. However that doesn't prevent current religious groups, from suspecting/predicting/proclaiming the end is near. This was also popular trend during the 1800's with religious revival groups.

And I wasn't picking on Christianity, it was simply a convenient example of a religion that has apocalyptic origins and still contains apocalyptic sects and beliefs.

The demise of religion has been predicted for hundreds of years. People have expected that religion would be extinguished in the 21st century. However this hasn't occurred, and religious has grown more adaptive, pervasive as it seems that more scientific knowledge encompasses our lives.

Sweeping statements like this reveal an egocentric, opinionated and immature personality, basically you are claiming that your belief is the correct one, and anything else is wrong. Try to be a little more open minded; religion has been both good and bad to humanity since the beginning of civilization, and there is no doubt in my mind that it will continue to be a good and bad influence in our future.

I hate arguing on the internet, but such one sided proclamations need another perspective revealed.

    Word.

FUN FACT: Atheism requires faith that your convictions are right, YOU'RE JUST AS FUCKING RETARDED AS THE RELIGIONFAGS YOU CLAIM YOU'RE SMARTER THAN!

:O Self pwning, or ironing, you be the judge.

As for cosmic rays not being related to LHC.

Look up the energy levels generated by cosmic ray strikes, and what the LHC will be capable of.

We're talking orders of magnitude here, zoom factors, the LHC isn't that powerful.

As for black holes, I'd be scared, because it isn't a fact that they radiate, it's an assumption. No one has actually seen a black hole yet, they're kinda sneaky, hairless and all.

Rays hitting the atmosphere aren't 2 particles being hurled straight at each other at roughly the speed of light. There's more overall energy going on up there, but it's a different kind of reaction.

And even if this thing was capable of generating black holes (which again, it's not), they would be so tiny and evaporate so fast that they would pose 0 danger.

Still want a Half-life in real life scenario.

What's the chance of the LHC creating a resonance cascade?

    ...

Cosmic Rays moving at significant relativistic velocities and colliding with the "relatively" motionless upper atmosphere IS the exact same thing as what is happen in LHC.

I mean, to the fucking letter it is the same thing.

Mass A + huge velocity in direction A
    meet
Mass B + huge difference in velocity along direction A
    ???
    BOOM!

Guess what cosmic rays are: particles traveling at significant fractions of the speed of light.

    Sound familiar?

Again, just to clarify: Hawking is smart, but it isn't proven that black holes radiate, it depends COMPLETELY on if the current formulation of quantum theory, and his interpretation of gravity in currently uncharted regions, is correct.

My favorite thing about this whole LHC event so far was Stephen Hawking telling us not to expect to find the epiphany particles we're looking for.

E = MC^2, hence E/C^2 = M ._.; Anyways, I always find LHC chatter fascinating. One of my physics instructors, who has taught in Switzerland, almost came just talking about it in class.

Nah, he is more clever than this. He always bet against his own hypothesis to make sure he doesn't lose face completely if he is wrong.

"Told you, my theories were right"
"Told you, we wouldnt find them"

Nothing wrong with this, but that's why he said that.

Einstein never thought we'd see a gravitational light ring from space, either. But thanks to the VLR, we did!
